Great overview. I concur with your thoughts on Todoist. It is enticing when you look at the package, but those downsides loom large once you start using it. I was surprised when they recently fixed how they handle repeating tasks and sub-tasks-which were a huge negative until that point. So, perhaps there is hope for the future. Allowing a user to adjust density might take away that objection. Cultured Code, please take note of the Kanban Boards, integrations, and ability for filtering (i.e. saved searches), and the ability to have more depth!

That's the Things clone setup in Todoist. Good to know that You're still with things, as Todoist violates one of the Golden Akkies Five rules on choosing task managers: no start dates. Often requested but avoided by the devs ever since. Todoist has a couple of advantages. Depending on your needs, it might make it valuable despite missing start dates. Still love the clarity you manage to communicate about features the app. Great job, Peter!

I changed to Todoist fairly recently having tried most of the others, and it suits me perfectly - I’ve even managed to import my Google calendar events for each day. I’ve never managed to get location-based reminders to work though!

Great and useful video, Peter, I’ve been considering switching from the Things three for a number of reasons primarily my need to be able to integrate into one platform, three calendars worth of stuff to do and be able to have an integrated surface for that. What do you think of Susanna for this?

I'm impressed with Todoist as well Peter. Once you have some useful filters set up you can tidy some of the views. Taking the best of Things 3 and Todoist would give us an awesome task manager. I think Doist have said they'll never implement a 'when' date.

Yeah I had a brief back-and-forth about that with the Doist CEO and he said it would be a complex addition, so it doesn’t sound likely. Such a shame.

The only thing holding me back from switching from Things 3 to todoist is the start date / deadline thing. Also the repeating tasks was kind of strange. At home I’m living in a Apple eco system, at work there’s only Windows, so I have to use my phone with things at work. Would be great to see Things 3 on the web, or if Todoist would add the lacking features.
@PeterAkkies
@PeterAkkies Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Unfortunately I wouldn’t hold my breath for either Things on the web or start dates in Todoist. Things relies so heavily on Apple tech that isn’t available for the web. And the Todoist CEO doesn’t seem keen on adding start dates. So we face a trade-off! It’s why I use Things. But I understand the frustration about having to use Things at work on your phone.

@@PeterAkkies hey, first of all thank you for these kind of both motivational and informative videos. Its fun to watch. You have a great style for explaining things, you have an good prepared outline, good examples etc. To get to the main point, can subtasks be used for start date alternative? I believe, you didn't mention this in any of your videos. I'm sure, I'm not the only one come up with this idea. But did you ever consider/use this? I would like to hear your thoughts. thank you

@@buuras Hey Buğra. Thanks for your kind words. That’s an interesting idea. I probably wouldn’t do it that way myself, because it feels clunkier than writing the hard deadline in the notes, but it’s certainly worth trying to see whether it works for you.

i love things but at work i unfortunately have to get used to todoist, i don't always want to take my ipad to work. the biggest weak point of todoist compared to things: the lack of the "when do i want to do the task" button. even if there is a deadline, i don't want to do the task that day, as you already showed in your video. this makes things clearly better.

I am a long time user of Todoist and also a fan of GTD. However, lately I have found some of the concepts of GTD organization to be cumbersome, (i.e., Context views), especially with the cross platform availability of so many tools now. I also have Things 3 but my company utilizes PCs and so the inability to integrate is a deal breaker. Therefore, I would love to see a Best Practices course implementing your productivity methods utilizing Todoist. Bottom line: I really enjoy your “to the point” delivery and your logical, sequential, road map is easy to follow.

I am actually migrating from Things 3 to Todoist. While I love the looks of Things 3, there are repeating tasks that I just could not get to work in Things, and I often want to attach files which I cannot do in Things. Lastly, I love the Todoist integration with my job’s M365. My perfect app would be Todoist features with Things 3 look and feel. :)

Thanks a lot for the helpful review Really exciting ) My personal Todoist Pros: + UX/UI design (plain, convenient, soft, and stable) + Environment (they have an extensive and robust library of knowledge about how to GTD, led projects, etc.) + accessibility (across all platforms and devices) + support Todoist cons - first and significant drawback: you can't simply see completed tasks on today's view (yep, they have another way, but it isn't very easy). Why do they hide motivation? - no flexibility: for ex. subtasks are showing like separate tasks in the board view (but if you have dozen of the parent tasks with hundreds of subtasks it looks like a mess) Yep development team doing a great job, but when competitors provide simple solutions, Todoist years remain conservative But, despite all of the drawbacks, if you have the intention to Doing Things Done, Todoist is the powerful tool, which definitely helps you

For personal tasks I find Todoist better... the input is much better and faster and the interface is cleaner. But for projects it's completely different... the deadline in Things is fantastic and also how the progress is displayed. The lack of a start date in Todoist is a real drawback for projects. The directly displayed calendar deadlines are very good, 2-Way Sync like in Todoist would be great of course.... but I don't want to have my tasks in the calendar, for me that's not such an important criterion. Things is also much cheaper! I paid something around 50€, that's for the Mac and iOS version - a one-time payment! With Todoist I've been paying around 36€ each year (the new prices are even higher, around 48€). Peter, what are your main reasons for continuing to use Things 3?
@PeterAkkies

Would you really add a "Leave a tip for housekeeper" task to your todo list? I know it is for demo but it would be good to cover in another video, what actually should you put in your todo list vs. keep in your mind. I mean if you forget to tip housekeeper it is not really that important - you spend energy and time to put and organise that task from there so you wouldn't put, "go to toilet" or "Brush your teeth" there. You just do.
