Күн бұрынIU is perhaps the most famous soloist in K-pop today. Debuting in 2008 as a singer-songwriter, her singing career exploded in the 2010s. In just a few short years, IU would become a singer that would top the music charts with each new release. She would be a highly, sought-after singer to collaborate with.
IU would emerge as one of Korea’s little sisters to one of the nation’s most influential celebrities.

The more I learn about the korean music industry, more I get scared by the success of IU. Her career is a rare thing to see! She managed to overcome many stereotypes and made it great for both young and adult audiences, something very difficult to achieve. I am proud to say that, i am a uaena💜

I think IU is so special bc no one can question her artistic merit as a songwriter or work ethic. To have the commercial success, acclaim via her peers and critics, and rise in Acting and Branding simultaneously is unprecedented.

I think no one in k-entertainment did it before like IU do, isn it? The closest I think are BoA, Lee Seung Gi, and Rain, and they all three have different traits, different area from IU too.

In addition to G-Dragon, his Big Bang teammate TOP is another one with potential. He's already been acting, in CFs, and part of one of the most famous groups. I do agree with Bramantyo above though that outside of IU, BoA, Lee Seung-gi, and Rain are the three soloists that have success in acting and branding.

IU's soju ads are no joke. I remember being surprised by seeing a soju ad of hers on a restaurant window in Hamburg, Germany when I was there for a layover a couple years ago.

Definitely, I've heard even overseas, there's some IU ads around. I know in LA's Koreatown, for instance, IU ads were all over the place.

I think the fact that she writes awesome lyrics and kills it in any genre of music is the biggest reason. Her music always has a meaning and we learn a lot from her. The other factor could be that most of her fans are her fans for her songs and character than her sexual appeal so no matter how old she is, they will support her.

IU IU IU IU IU is the only singer I know in Korea. That's the fact sorry for being lazy knowing some kpop star.. but IU is the only one who makes my heart melt because of her songs it's just her song spoke to me Everytime... When I have struggle and some issue about life, just grab your phone and headset make it in high volume and just listen Through the Night, etc.. Until it makes you sleep, damn if you wake up in the morning you've been energized that is the power of her songs... JUST FREAKING LOVE HER! THE END!!!!💖

There are simple reasons for her ongoing success besides her beauty (and yes, she is stunning): her obvious talent and creativity, her determination, her choices regarding acting roles, for instance and the fact that she is classy. I have never seen her doing anything you could call "cheap". And I think many people like that, not only in Korea (which is said to be pretty conservative still)!

Well IU is good at acting cause she goes to an acting school and her first dream is to be an actress. And IU also said that when she is little she used to be called Lee JiGeum Eun Dong by her friends. ( gold, silver, bronze )

Exactly. I think a lot of K-pop singers try and transition to solo artists because they can last a lot longer. As we both know, K-pop singers have an expiration date.

IU was featured in Forbes' Asia's 2019 Heroes Of Philanthropy: Catalysts For Change and was the youngest person on the list. You could add it to the video if you feel like it. Also,her song Good Day was announced by Billboard as the number one Kpop song of the last decade.

I rewatched your IU video today and I agree with everything you said. She’s adorable. I really respect and love her. When I was living in Seoul I was lucky and randomly run into her. She’s indeed that humble, beautiful and down to earth in real life. I wish her all the best and I promise that I will stay her loyal fan forever. Everything she touches is gold for me.

IU participating in alcohol advertisement is mainly due to symbolism “Soju” advertisement has in Korea. “Chamiseul”, one of two biggest soju brands, has a long history of using top female celebrities and modeling for the soju brand symbolizes the person is a top top celebrity. (doing ads for electronics of either Samsung or LG, banks, cosmetics, and etc... also symbolizes the same). IU being able to do it for years is an impressive achievement, because not a lot of celebrities have privileges of doing so.

Sometimes, I kinda feel sad to those other groups and idols who released their songs along side hers. Her chart success became so effortless in comparison to others who are working so hard and still not winning in any music shows. Even some big fandom have to zombie stream to beat her on the chart.

I hope Jason see this, lol 😁 The more I analyzed IU's musicality, the more I think her strongest power is on her voice timbre. I can compare it to voice of Kazutoshi Sakurai (Mr Children), Superfly, YUI, or Kiyoe from Ikimono... Who all have special timbre that make people love them so much. Especially sakurai who was very influential, and some analyst said that his voice mess up and hypnotized Japan generation in 90's 🤣 I think IU, despite change her voice bit by bit always have that "special timbre" and she is very smart on using it, like on Friday, Through The Night, Autumn Morning, or Meaning of You. Like Sakurai and Mr Children, maybe she doesnt have a super vocal technique, but their honesty, their relatable lyrics and musicality won people's heart. How do you think about my analogy? 😋

I like the analogy! With IU, I think many K-pop fans know that she doesn't have the strongest vocals, yet she uses her voice so well. Her singing has a unique sound, coupled with her lyrics, makes her songs resonate with many. It's like you said how the artists you listed, like Mr. Children, IU's songs are relatable and wins people's hearts.

You are right, her voice is special. She admitted that at the start of her career, her voice was ordinary. So she had to change the way she sings so her voice will sound different. Even then, she’s already a genius at honing her musicality! She said herself that she wish she could rerecord her songs from the start of her career. I wish she would, I’m sure they will sound even more awesome.

IU is amazing - she's one of the first soloists I got into when I first started listening to kpop, and it's so amazing to see how her career's evolved as she's gotten older. Can you please do an episode on Brown Eyed Girls? They're such an underrated and amazing group and I wish they got more shine in the industry, plus they're a rarity in the amount of control they've had in their careers.

Actually, that's a very good topic! I know IU and her team are very close. I read that her bodyguard or manager (one of them) really liked Red Velvet. There's so much about IU that it's so hard to cover in one video. I'm glad the Ueanas have a ton of ideas for other videos. Tbh i watch a lot of dramas and i aways have prejudice against idol actors, because ive seen them in their idol image cos i stay up to date with kpop toom. With IU, u can definitely see her improve in her acting. She had one expression the entire time kf scarlett heart, and ive seen her work in hotel del luna, shes really inproved. I also think the thing that makes her stand out is because shes a solo artists. When groups age, i just see a bunch of adult men on stage, but with a soloist thats kinda broken down

@@elizabethle3460 to be fair, IU's great acting there is supported by her super talented partner, Lee Sun Kyun. But that drama itself is a masterpiece, no doubt. Its a gem of a kdrama, maybe one you got in just every 5 years. And that success actually make Hotel del Luna success is very interesting, because she and her management team managed to get a decent project back to back after a super masterpiece. Usually the project after the super success always anticlimatic and underwhelming, but HDL managed to impress too.

Hi, finally this video come out.... I anticipated and waited for it from 2-3 days ago :D Just want to quick mention before analyze deeper.... First I like that your video is not all about singing praises, but just stating the fact. Second, just a little bit input... I think maybe the duration is a little bit too long? IMO maybe its better to divide it into 2 parts and grouping relevant issues in each part, for example first part about music, and 2nd beyond music. Buuuttt.... I appreciate this :) I hope many people watch your contents. I will try to share your videos in my twitter or recommend it to other kpop fans. One discussion... Do you think IU still underrated in international fan scene? I personally think many new KPOP fans dont know IU, maybe because they focused only to their bias.

I can totally understand how the duration could be too long. This could have been split into two videos easily. However, I made the IU video long for two main reasons: 1. I like going in-depth with longer videos. Plus, KZfaq favors videos that goes longer than 10 min, since KZfaq wants people to stay on their platform as long as possible. 2. As much as IU is great, I wanted to move onto other artists. If I split this into multiple videos, I would have to do another IU video. No problem in your fair criticisms / critiques! It actually really helps me a ton. And thanks for sharing the content; I am really humbled that you'd share my videos. As for your question, I think IU still is underrated, especially in the Western fandom. Long-time K-pop fans know and appreciate her, especially in Asia. But in the West, fans largely stan the idol groups they're most biased towards.

But again, its hard for new fans to grasp a whole concept of "K-music" right away. We just can hope they will expand their kpop worldview and become more smart fan, maybe through your videos too :)

@@Popsori Plenty of new k-pop stans definitely overlook her (and almost all other second gen k-pop icons) but that is certainly changing. Due to her dramas' immense local and international success and her sold-out concerts in Asia, foreign audience are starting to appreciate her even more (which is saying something since she's already 'famous FAMOUS').

Just to add to the conversation regarding the international scene, I dont think she really is that interested. During her guesting in Knowing brothers in 2018, one of the host said something about it being nice if she wins in an American Music Awards and IU said she does not have such lofty goals and that she just wants to be stable. And one more instance during her 2020 W magazine photoshoot, regarding shoots overseas and I guess in general too, that she kinda has a hard time traveling overseas so she mostly turn those down. I guess if the demand is really there, she would definitely do it for the fans but it's not her goal. She seems contented in what she is doing right now. Critically and commercially acclaimed in both the music scene and acting scene and with all that money she's getting from those CFs this year alone, she really does not need to branch out. lol

Some time ago, i watched your video 'The rise of BTS' released in 2017 and realized how much the group itself has achieved in such a few years; looking at it now, I realize that the group has broken many stereotypes and has become increasingly larger among the korean adult audience, what do you think of that? What do you think can be expected from the group a few years from now? Please make a video on this subject, and it would be the perfect time, since the group just completed 7 years of career (a very special number for them). I am very curious about your opinion...😊

Thanks for watching. Very humbled by your comments and that you watch my videos. As for BTS, there's so many videos I have enqueue right now, I'm not sure when I can get back to doing BTS. I do think BTS is changing a lot in K-pop these days. For instance, with stereotypes, BTS played a huge part in breaking the Asian stereotype of being "just a doctor, lawyer, programmer, etc." Now, many people look at Asian guys as attractive, which I'm all about. Maybe within this year, I can do another BTS video. But I really wanted to do other, lesser known groups. With that being said, I am honored that you're curious about my opinion on BTS 😀

I hear you. I heard a lot of the fan theories from international fans, then I went to Korean sources and saw that the song meant something different.

Eight MV has nothing to do with what you are suggesting in this video. There is nothing in the statement made by IU about this song that contradicts anything about the song being about her struggle in dealing with these deaths. However, once you take a deep look into the lyrics, imagery, symbolism and metaphors presented In the MV their is only one reasonable and rational conclusion to come to. This song is without any doubt about her struggle in dealing with the deaths of her 3 friends. There were those who claimed she was restoring her memories. However the video clearly shows her pushing the RECORD button. The lyrics ask Are you happy now, Finally happy now. This lyric only in the context of speaking to someone with whom you have or had a relationship with and has under gone a significant change. And asking if that change has allowed them to finally be happy. The lyric that tells us what sort of change as occurred is include the the lyric "forever young". And the lyric where IU says she feels like she has lost everything, she doesn't want to love anyone again b/c they just come and go as they please without even saying good bye. All of these lyrics match up perfectly with her dealing with the death of her friends 2 of which died within 9 months of the release of this song. The animation scenes are done in 2 different styles representing 2 different types or levels of existence. The 3d animation representing the world of the living and the 2d animation the afterlife. These 2 worlds are divided by a black barrier that the girl in White (clearly Sulli) passes through to enter the world of the living in order to say good bye to IU. IU considers the awake world to currently be a nightmare where reality of what has happened cant be ignored, and she doesn't want to wake up from her li ing in her memories of her friends. She even designs about how the memories she is recording of her friends, that there are no good byes or sad ending and they will be forever young there. Virtually none of the imagery, symbolism or metaphors match up with or even make sense in the context you are suggesting. IU did state that this song is apart of her age series, which I think is the source for most of the line of thought you and others have used to base you your understanding. This song however is totally different from all of her other age related songs in many ways. As the 27 Pearl's on her arm clearly show and she even stated that the song was about her 27th year in which she felt very lethargic. But the title 8 actual has several meaning within the context of the song. Yes it refers to her age, but it also refers to infinity or forever where her memories are being kept as well as the number of years she had a close friendship with Sulli. After all 8 isn't actually 28 but using just the number 8 allows for it to represent all those related yet different relationships.

Also, just want to point out a few more things in addition to those you have mentioned above: 1) the digital form of the number 8 resembles the chinese character 日(rì), which means day/sun, probably another reason why the song is talking about being "under the orange sun". 2) at the end of the MV, the number eight was split into a reversed 3 and 1, which may also signify her 3 friends leaving her alone behind.

I don't really understand what kpop mean. Most IU songs are ballads, not pop. Is she can still be called kpop artist?

As a Korean, I think Kpop is literally Korean popular music. And a lot of korean really love calm and silent song like ballad or RnB ( even hip hop genre, if you listen to the popular song which was on main chart, you can find most of them are not the aggressive sound). In my opinion, because of the western media, many people think that kpop = idol music. But I can't agree with that. (And i think many Korean think like me...) I know some point korean music industry have some differences compared to Western music industry. Maybe that's an idol music (or maybe also it can be style, make up, and a mix of many different genres in a song). And it can be one of the distinct features, but I think it can not be the whole thing. Then what is the KPOP? I just want to say it can be anything. I mean any genres. It can be idol music, it can be indie band, it can be hip-hop, ballad..ect. Because they are really influenced by each other and cowork together, and popular music in Korea.
