Good stuff, but I'm maybe biased since the argument supports how I do things. I'm a writer first and always approach my games like my books and therefore self-publish, which I've been doing for 20 years this year. The reasons are pretty simple. I'm not doing it for the money, I'm leaving my mark, so even a large advance has no allure to me if my name may not be on the finished product or I have to share credit with someone I didn't actually work with. I also know that a book, and therefore a game or a music album or whatever, can sit around not selling for years (or decades) and then suddenly sell like hotcakes, so if something I make ever pops, I want the benefit myself (or to be directed to whoever I leave my stuff to when I die), not the pennies on a dollar a publisher will hand over. Bottom line is that Stephen Kings and Sid Meiers are 1 in a million and having a publisher just isn't going to change that math enough to matter, your failure rate will always be 99.9% on 'making it big'.

i'm not a BG designer, per se, but these kinds of questions apply to many kinds of jobs. do i work for roto-rooter or get a work van and start my own plumbing business? do i make my own hot sauce using secret hobo spices, or work for tobasco? do i become a sniper for the coast guard or be a professional assassin? it's probably easier now than it ever was to do your own thing... and more competitive as a result. but, you have an advantage: you did your research, you have a plan and a Plan B, you have the financial wherewithal, you're willing to forego fun with your girlfriend so you can give your spare time to your wife, your ducks are in a row. you know there are going to be twists and turns, diabolical schemes against you along the way, and ppl and events that will test your religion or bring out the devil in you. none of that makes a damn difference, if it's in you to do so then that's just the way it is. if the thought of someone else making money off your idea just doesn't sit well with you because no one gets rich working for someone else, there's only one option here. if you're not sure if you're that kind of person, oh, you'll know sooner than later. if you're not that kind of person, that's fine, people are suited for what they're suited for and that's just the way of it. after all the pros and cons are weighed, you're going to do what you want to do because how your mind works and philosophy operates. if you can be talked out of being your own man after a couple of videos dissuade you enough, if working twice as hard for half the pay offends you, and if glory and world domination has no appeal to you, then you're not that kind of person. it's fine to doubt and double-question yourself, but that's not going to stop you from trying. carpe diem, baby.
