@NURKFPV
@NURKFPV 6 жыл бұрын
The rocket booster only happens when the battery is fairly well charged. At the end of a race, it's likely not got enough juice left to rocket, and will instead just blue some smoke.

I love how you captured the usual project start-up issue's. I think most of my own builds are usually 50% of the time actually doing something and the other 50% spent looking for the thing I just had in my hand 3 freakin mins ago 😩or searching for very specific crap inside heaps of generic unsorted crap that somehow automagically keeps accumulating in like 12 different locations around my house.

No kidding! It's one thing to see the energy expended in flight, but quite another thing to see how much destructive power is in one. Now I see why people say store your lipos in ammo boxes. It isn't just a little smoke and smoulder when one goes up, its serious fire.

Yikes! I had a fire in my room because of a lipo that i converted it from a 3s to a 2s because my skyhunter crashed into a tree and by the tim i got it down a cell was at 0.00v. A week after it was done modding i took it off the charger, waled away, and heard a sound. Seonds later my face was glowing orange. Lucky i grabbed my dad and we tackled the fire with a blanket and some water on the red ashes. Lost some good batts in tje fire but now am replacing all the equipment after 3 months of the fire. Just some wall damages too.

I installed a smoke detector right above my charging station, a fire extinguisher by the door on the wall and moved away easily combustable materials from around the charging station. Next I would like to get a 25' hose with a quick adapter so I can hook it up to my bathroom or kitchen sink. I have had two occasions where somehow the batteries got over charged, probably because I was going too fast, but I caught both before the fire balls. 4s was @19v & 3s was @14.8v both were extremely puffed.

That is intense, thank you for the reminder. I am heading out to get a larger fire extinguisher. However I do charge on my outside porch and if I am charging larger than a 500 milliamp I put the whole rig in the BB-Q grill. QUESTION; Reading comments,,, others and myself will keep the batteries outside in the fire bags. Do I need to worry that much about a disconnected / storage charged battery? The weather is starting to warm up but we still have freezing temps, do I need to worry about them freezing?
@NURKFPV

I don't think you need to worry in terms of batteries going up in flames, but it's probably better for their lifespan overall if you keep them at room temp.

Buy a bat-safe for $50, designed for that specific purpose. Failing that, a saucepan with a lid is pretty much perfect in terms of containment. Get a foam or powder extinguisher too if you don't have one. Fire extinguishers go by the exit. If you have to go IN to a room that's on fire to get to the extinguisher, it's not much use.

Ok in this scenario dont over charge your batteries....UNLESS you need some PYRO near Some gates for your crazy balls to the walls pilots to fly thru then we're talking Show time!! ok not really, as a person who HAD a non related fire(a power strip connected to a faulty extension wire caused the fire) in my home which took out the majority of my drone stuff, it is not pretty or funny considering my batteries were only a couple feet away from that fire. i wont even keep my batteries in side the house any more and they are only stored in the fire proof cases outside the house. Nice demo, loved the wife cameo at the beginning!!

I always thought that those battery-fire scenarios were from people over-charging or charging without balance, in parallel etc. but reading the comments, I see sometimes you just get unlucky and have a faulty battery that starts puffing and catching fire while charging as it should. I'm glad I never left them to charge unattended. And maybe I'll start charging them outside my window again (I sometimes do this to avoid the fan noise from my ISDT).

So a couple of thoughts; has anyone considered a battery strap with a micro switch? If the battery puffed it would pull the strap tight enough to trigger the switch and could open a relay in the charger 120vac circuit? Also, as I get into this hobby, how likely is it that other wise well cared for batteries burst into flames just sitting at storage charge or even left for long periods at full charge? And yea I know not to keep LiPos fully charged for more then a day or two.

I really don't get it. If someone wants more umph from the pack and the motors just up the cell count! You increase the cell count, you increase the voltage. You increase the voltage on the motor leads, you increase the current and thus the overall power. Want to fly longer on the track? Go 6s and accordingly selected rpm/v motors. The higher the voltage, the less the current needed for given power and the more efficient the whole system becomes as losses are more evident in low voltage+high current scenarios than in high voltage-low currents. Leads, mos-fet Rds-on, even D-S on/off times are better on higher voltages. It's just like trying to overfill your car's tank with gas. It will overflow and you will set it on fire eventually. Go goddamn 10s and talk to be from there. Same watts/pack.
