Why you SHOULDN'T travel with fully Charged Lipos

So this video is a little bit more of a PSA for something that I've seen happen a decent bit, but I haven't really had a good out let to speak out against it. People should NOT be traveling via airplane with fully charged lipos, because the potential energy stored in the LiPo creates a lot more danger than when they're storage charged. I dive into my favorite solutions for discharging lipos, and demonstrate with fire and axes what could go wrong.

Great video, Nurk. A very important topic. I have had the FD-100 model for almost a year now, and use it all the time. I typically charge all of my packs for the weekends... but have had bad weather scuttle plans from time to time... leaving me with 20+ fully charged packs. With my FD-100, I'm able to daisy chain multiple parallel boards together, usually 3 for my typical purposes, and drain 12 packs at once at a max of 500ma each. Saves loads of time, and is a nice gentle discharge rate. Babying the investment! Additionally, I plug in the balance plugs too, to keep them safely stowed during the process. I love the idea of the FD-200 and Bluetooth, tho... that's brilliant. Have to look at this. But for $35, the FD-100 also works great for the budget-minded.

NURK!, you're really awesome and absolutely one of my favorites..., but brother, cutting that fully charged lipo by hand was pretty darn stupid. You got really lucky. I've done this demo many times and a lot of the times, the lipo goes off faster than you can pull your hands away. Pretty much an explosion of flesh destroying heat and fire. That ax was your best safety tool for a safe demonstration. Not saying you're stupid, at all, but your action to test fate like that was. I know, cause at 53, I've done it many times over. I love your content Nurk, BE Safe man. Flying anything RC with burnt hands is a real challenge but not as bad as wiping your own buttttt. Rotor On Nurk!

Nice video, I actually just had a lipo blow on me. Was sitting at my desk. had 2 6S 650 batteries on the balance board, but they were fully charged. Just sitting there while I finished up some other stuff.... all of a sudden, I hear a hiss and then smoke... Batteries weren't damaged, hadn't been in a crash, I guess it was just their "time"... Fortunately I had them charging in a Bat-Safe and it was a very controlled situation. I was shocked when I later opened the safe to see the amount of destruction. Be safe out there! Respect your batteries!

I never thought that when storage charge its like it "had" no power at all, even when all the cells are punctured/cutted. Unlike the fully charged lipo. Even just a tiny puncture on 1 cell, can cause big fire. Thanks for the info. This really helps.

not only should people keep batteries at rest and during any kind of travel (especially during fligts) at storage voltage but I also think batteries should be kept in a fire proof bag. Also for tests like this, I highly recommend a nail or blade on the end of 6 foot piece of wood

A lot of people have the misconception that the lithium in lithium batteries is the dangerous exploding stuff. But thats entirely wrong, there is no pute lithium in these cells and the electrodes behave quite tame when exposed to air. The "explosion" is really just the energy stored in the battery, and this is true for any type of battery. Put lots of energy into a tiny package, and something like that can happen if you somehow release it all at once.

Nurk, great reminder. Just got back from trip and always storage charge before boarding a plane. One question I would pose to anyone who know. What’s the safest method for “disposal” of a Lipo that’s been damaged and can’t be discharged safely? Have had plenty of batteries 🔋 cables get cut by props or damaged on impact that aren’t safe to discharge ….thoughts? 🤔

You seem to have missed that the packs need to be at the same voltage before plugging into your squid lead. I looked at that very discharger but didn't like that it doesn't keep the packs balanced I went for a cheapy one that uses bulbs but also monitors the cell voltage not pack voltage.

I have a stupid amount of batteries and I make certain they are at storage voltage just to protect the investment. I have 6 different 50cal ammo cans organized to contain everything from 3s to 6s. Nothing goes into a storage can without first being checked to make sure it is as storage voltage. When out flying there are two cans usually, one for charged and one for not charged.

I always discharge my batteries too but i have a smarter solution: i plug all my batteries in parallel into my M8 toolkitRC charger input, then i made a cable xt60 to barrel connector that i plug into my laptop and then i use the output function on that charger and i set 19.5v and 9.5A and i have some hours of "free" electricity to my laptop. Its easy, fast and you don't waste your energy just to make hot air and noise ;)

I've seen a few battery fire protection bags where the reviewer will test if the bag will withstand the heat from one battery on fire. But most of those bags (even the ones being reviewed) fit 4-8 batteries and most people will pack those bags up to maximum capacity. I'd love to see a realistic test where the reviewer tests the bag filled to capacity with multiple batteries.

Just imagine how scary it would be if smoke from 10 fully charged lipos started billowing out from the overhead! Now imagine its all your fault lol Good tips and also get a lipo bag(I use Pyro's bag cheap and large enough). Traveling with a drone is super easy. I got extra inspection once and they just swab everything then measured my tools. I ended up getting Ethix's combo wrench for traveling so I don't need to bring hex drivers that are essentially ice picks.
