I think maybe because people are expecting bad things happen to them after taking the rocks. They start to notice horrible things in their life that they would normally just put down as struggles in a standard existence.

me whilst watching this: oh wait I have some petrified wood from a national geographic magazine that came from america - that explains why bad shit keeps happening to me stevie: you can legally buy rock from places near there... and that doesn’t come with the curse apparently me: oh well in that case I’m just incredibly unlucky

Petrified - ie scared stiff, like a tree has been turned to stone, an inanimate object. Stevie was essentially right but it's not really linked from medusa. :)
