I had to get bailed out twice running out of gas. One was in upstate NY, somewhere near Lake Champlain, driving to Montreal ran out, I walked up to an overpass and a school bus driver picked me up, took me to a gas station a few miles away, drove me back to my car. I must have done it a few times to help people out of gas too.

you just have to remember if what you're putting on the trailer has suspension then the trailer doesn't need suspension. if you were say to build an offroad camper trailer without suspension and take it on a long offroad trip it would shake itself and everything inside it to bits.
@erikv5382
@erikv5382 2 жыл бұрын
the point is that it isn't suspension-less: large volume supple tires with low pressures are suspension. The air volume provides recoil while the rubber provides dampening. Pretty sure that this trailer has all the drawback you would expect if you would run it with high pressure in the tires.

I've been playing in the sand for 40 years, everything from Jeeps to rails to SXS's, and Matt is right. The machines are incredibly capable, when driven right. They do impart a false sense of security on a inexperienced driver or someone who is driving with an acute case of cranial-rectal inversion. Just the facts. Matt if you can find a Hydrotex Jobber get some of their Hy-Torque fluid and put it in the Corvair. I had a 31 ft class A motor home with a Turbo 400 and a mechanical trans temp gauge. We live in the mountains, and that fluid dropped the temp of the trans by an honest 15 degrees, the stuff is amazing. I still run it in many rigs.

When I worked GMs customer assistance, I got a call from a guy with a Chevy truck, that frequently went off-roading. His complaint, was how to know when to fill the tank because he runs out frequently, and had to carry a five gallon gas can to get home. He went on to explain, you know when the gage reads E, and you keep going, and the warning light comes on, and you keep going, when should you fill up? His logic, was once the light comes on, there should still be enough fuel to get home from anywhere, get to work the next day, and be able to fill up on the way home from work.
@nirfz
@nirfz 2 жыл бұрын
My dad is the complete opposite, after running out of fuel long ago once with the car of his brother (on a road), his car very seldomly even gets to put the reserve light on. (1/4 full is when he mostly fills up again) And the very few times when he does get to reserve, he almost panically looks for the next possibility to immediately fuel up. (We live in a small european country, so the chance that you won't make it to one on reserve is pretty low.)

Matt is smart enough to rely on not just his experience, but the experience of others. Rory's design is the way to do what they do. If the load gets tippy, you can strap harder to collapse whatever suspension might still be flexing and keep the whole load as stiff as possible since the load itself will change the center of gravity. Keep it as low as possible is physically the best way to avoid disaster.

@@fartzinacan Yup. Morvair being being built on a Corvair is a long unibody which has a lot of flex in it. Add all the additional leverage from the lift and extra articulation when it's at the limit it puts too much stress on the corners and breaks the glass. Some production cars have this problem still to this day (Dart II) being the most recent one I can recall. Only solution is suspended mounting of the glass in a rubber gasket but makes the glass damn near impossible to look out at speed as it vibrates.

We have a small agricultural tractor and trailer... The trailer have a differential and a drifeshaft that's connected with the tractor, and the tractor have the ability to syncronise the pto to make is spin at the same speed of the transmission, instead of giving power like a normal pto. By doing that, we can have a 6x6 tractor and trailer conbination, instead of a simple 4x4 tractor and dead weight pulled trailer. Can you imagine doing something like that with Matt'a offroad trailer? That would be amazing to watch! Obviously is technically tuff to do, and I'm just describing how many ways of moving on ruff terrains exists, and for a territory like Italy, a 4x4 tractor, with a 2x2 trailer is a good choice when you have to work on steep terrains

Only thing is, where Matt lives, the terrain is very rough and it's all rock crawling a lot so that is not an answer here, but on more flat terrain when off road, I can see it working. Even Trail Mater uses pretty much the same trailer design for the axles and thus, Matt is using that setup for his trailer. Again, they both run very similar terrain when doing rescues.

@@PD-we8vf it's up of the kind of job that the agricultural tractor is configured, but basically every tractor brands can have a synchronized gear for their pto. The main thing is that the trailer's gearing matches the gearing of the tractor's pto and transmission, or you will end up with a trailer that run faster or slower than the tractor itself

@@johnhpalmer6098 that's right... Otherwise, our agricultural trailer is ment to work on steep fields, that's are pretty common in south Italy... A normal towed trailer is good too in our field, but a pto powered trailer is even better and safer... We can use it to pull too if needed, because, when the synchro pto is ingaged, the trailer become a part of the tractor, and is not towed anymore, and the tractor just need to steer it

Matt, I would make the hitch a big “A” arm that attaches with pivot points near the center point of the trailer. That way the entire trailer can act as a tilt bed. You probably will end up only using the ramps 5 percent of the time. It would be much easier to load the totaled out wheelers wrecks. I have one like this at home. It’s all held together with hitch pins so i can pull the pins on the pivot and swap ends in 2 minutes. I can even change the pivot so I can move the center further back or hug the tow vehicle , short for trails and long for improved highway behavior. I can even use the “A” frame as a tow bar for my Jeep. Keep those videos coming! Can’t wait to see the “tow monster” completed.

I too am a desert dweller and wheel a reasonably modded '86 Ramcharger. Plans are to stroke the 360 to 410 ci and ditch the current 727 trans in favor of a 2015 Ram 1500 8HP70 eight speed. First gear almost doubles the ratio in low range, twice the ratio choices vs the three speed 727 plus two overdrive ratios for road trips. One advantage for the desert is that the torque converter lockup RPM can be programmed as you see fit. Can also be set up to be toggled manually, handy for downhill engine braking. Converter slippage is what generates most of the heat in an auto trans. The 727 has been reliable as a hammer for 15 years, zero problems, but I'm going to give the eight speed a shot, see how it works out.

Matt: The only improvement I can see that might be a good idea for the trailor is a couple of angled skid plates to go before the leading tyres. Each plate could stop the wheel hooking on rocks by diverting from the frame downward to at least halfway height of the tyre and also diverting outward as well. Hopefully should vastly reduce potential axle damage and also keep the tyres on the rims.

I used to take two turbo 400 pans and weld them together for more volume for mud racers. We welded or brazed a heater core in the bottom pan and use heater hose from rad and or cooler to cool the trans from inside. works great even with a trans caked in mud they did not over heat. still use factory cooler but the 5/8 heatercore in the trans pan is the best.

Someone asked about auto trans vs manual on Trail Mater last week, and Rory said he uses manual because overheating the trans can leave you stuck and in trouble. It sounded like Matt was trying to prove that theory on the first job. He was obviously in a particularly good mood and letting his exuberance shine. With the channel and his amazing work with the adventure park fundraising, he must be quite a celebrity in his town and beyond. Well deserved IMHO.

It was really good to see Matt helping out a stranded motorist - especially at this time of the year when temperatures can rapidly soar into the triple-digits, here in Southern Utah. 👊 Makes me wonder if it would be cost-effective for someone to obtain the licensing and insurance to have a mobile service dedicated to providing fuel / bottled water to stranded motorists not necessarily requiring a 'tow' - but just low on fuel at the most inopportune time? What about even providing fuel for all these off-highway rentals at Sand Hollow State Park? Lastly - I'm now left wondering if the Morrvair and Banana would benefit with the addition of multiple automatic transmission fluid heat sinks and/or frame rail transmission coolers?
