Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

I worked for Paypal (Not MANGA company per se, but close in terms of size and company culture), I absolutely agree with all the points you've made. I'd also like to add, like other commenters have pointed out, that you don't HAVE to go to the famous names to have a good salary and a career in tech. I work at a different tech company now and my salary is higher, my day to day work is not stressful, I have a fantastic support system within the company and flexible work schedule. At my previous role I had absolutely nothing of the above, only one extra day off for "mental health" per month...let me tell you, when your daily job is hell, that extra day off is worth nothing. Give that random company you never heard of a try. You might be surprised!

I don’t want to work at a MANGA company (and have never wanted to), not because I can’t problem solve quickly or cope well with pressure, but because I would like to be able to have a life outside of work (and sustained, long term high pressure literally triggers my epileptic seizures, lol). I have been thinking about maybe working towards trying to get an interview at some point though, as the learning opportunities are really appealing to me. It’s by no means a concrete or serious goal of mine, however.

Not all FAANG jobs are that high stress. And you might find decent community and friends - social activities that you might not normally have if you work elsewhere. Plus, that background can make it easier to start new things you care about.

I'd say work-life balance is probably the best at MANGA than other places if you factor in effort per $. Most other places I've seen or worked at are low-stress + low pay or high-stress + high pay. If you work for the right team or niche, you can have low to medium-stress and high-pay (or at least excellent benefits) at MANGA. In some high performing circles, MANGA is seen as a retirement job.

I found this video to be very helpful :) I've watched a couple of MANGA / FAANG videos; for the ones based on counterarguments, I think this one is definitely the best. The various aspects of the reasons, the visuals, and of course, the turtle in the background and your friendly personality made it the best I've watched so far. In response to your question, I think I see myself more interested in working for start-ups and/or smaller businesses and organizations. Even if I didn't have a STEM heavy job, I think I would still find myself wanting to use computer science for projects of my own.

I just finished my second week at a MANGA company. I was not keen for the corporate environment, but wanted the pay raise lol and the learning opportunity/exp on my CV. I was ready for many of those negatives like the ethics and Z impact. My plan was to stay for a year then leave. My experience has been refreshingly different than I imagined. The teams are kept small and autonomous and really have to own their products. Though we sometimes have to be on call in case something happens, the work-life balance seems a lot better than with some of the smaller companies I've worked at where EVERYTHING ends up coming down on you and often it is caused by bad management. The ethics thing is also a lot better than my previous experiences at a bank for example, where everything is about profit. This company really puts the focus on the customer and being conscious of the effects of our actions. In some of the onboarding Q&A's I had to do, answers such as getting user data because "it will be valuable to the company" was blatantly wrong and the correct answers were along the lines of "get only what is necessary to service the customer needs and delete it as soon as possible". I guess that is a basic example but I found it completely different to the focus at other corporates where I have worked. Hopefully these companies will start learning from their mistakes, as you said there was no precedent. Thanks for a great video, really relevant content as always!

I read this, and I had exactly the same experience. I prepared myself for a cut-throat corporate environment, and I was pleasantly surprised just to see a company that takes its values (leadership principles) so seriously. I'm now almost at the 1 year mark and I still feel exactly the same as I did before. The amount of autonomy you have is staggering. Haha, when I read your comment, I thought, wow this sounds exactly like AWS. And it turns out it was haha! However, something I always hear is that your experience can be very team and manager-dependent. And it could be that I was very lucky with where I was placed. But glad to hear you have a similar experience!

This is a very much needed video for a lot of people; developers, recent grads, and even current students a like. They see all the glamour when it comes to working in FAANG/MANGA but don’t see the whole picture. This definitely changes the way I’m going to be approaching applications and interviews not only for internships but for full time jobs as well. Everything that you said is valid but what speaks to me the most is your last big point. The high expectations, stress, and standards. Knowing myself and my anxiety, I don’t think I’ll be able to handle that, and that’s not me putting myself down. That’s me knowing myself personally and how I deal with stress. The impact factor also got my attention too. I’d love to have an effect on people, love to make an impact/leave a legacy. But I don’t want to get fired if I don’t make an impact. Also, to wrap it up, a work life balance is important to me. I don’t want to be working 24/7.

I work as a civil engineer now and am working towards transitioning into tech. But I've never really had much interest working with the national or global firms in my field. And I've learned a lot of aches and pains about within in extremely small companies. A good small-to-mid-sized company is where the sweet spot is for me in my current field and I feel it will likely be the same for after the switch. You still get the higher impact and more close collaboration with owners and principals but you don't have to do EVERYTHING like with a super small group and slightly less toxic (the work "family" or nepotism issues) giant corps may have lots of resources and good pay but the bureaucracy and feeling like a number seems awful

Another thing I'm curious about when working for one of these companies, is whether or not there is a work life balance? I think it would be really cool to work at a MANGA but I also value my life outside of work. Bureaucracy and the constant pressure to deliver is the biggest buzz kill for many that I know that is currently working or worked at big tech. I work in the engineering industry in Europe and I have to say the employers here really do value intelligent and hard working people and somehow we manage to stay profitable every year without burning people out. I think a big contributor to this is that all mid management positions and management is staffed by people with engineering knowledge in the field that their departments work in, this enables them to set realistic targets, budgets and deadllines.

10:27 she's basically saying if you're stupid you should not work at any of these companies. Crickey! Every job in the world requires a lot of problem solving and quick learning, not just data science. Even life itself is full of problems and we carry on living because we find a way solve them. As someone working at one of these (can't say which) and been in the data science industry for some time now - I never belittle anyone that isn't in the same field or say 'it's not for you'. I even encourage the people I know (not force) to do data analytics when they are stuck in a dead-end job and looking for an advancement. I believe that anything can be learned no matter how 'not-into-solving-problem-and-quick-learning-that-requires-lots-of-ones'-brain-cells' you are. It's just a question of time, effort, interest. I say that it is a bit of a boast or there's a slight arrogance in the statement. Just something that is surprising to hear from an adult whose majority of the audience are people trying to pursue career in Data Science. I enjoyed the skit, very accurate. I got disappointed at the end.

There's always some harm at scale. That estimated 5-10% of innocent people in US prisons is 60-120K innocent people in US jails. Of course, governments are especially incompetent... Hard for them to be otherwise with their systems and core paradigms being so primitive. But that aside, some harm will always be done on the path to good. It's unavoidable, because we don't have absolute knowledge of the future. It's really fine that some harm be done. Lest we stay stuck where we are and greater good also not be done in the future. Because where we are, for all that it's better than the past... Is ultimately still a fairly low standard to be living up to. And building better requires acquiring greater wisdom through experience and mistakes. Some day, we will likely all be dead. But maybe the world will be much better. And that is more important than how we are living today. - The way some people at FAANG promote thinking about ethics seriously needs to be ignored. There are too many activists who are too focused on just harm without being able to comprehend the good or what it really takes to make progress in the real world. At its core, it's a primitive sort of human instinct that probably makes sense for small tribes but is ill suited to dealing with a world with complex systems, where the scope of things is just greater than what humans evolved to deal with. Widespread narratives on right and wrong are usually just wrong altogether. Much like how people believe in many religions with their beliefs never being grounded in reality - you can get away with being wrong permanently when the feedback loops produce no significant harm to your life for being wrong. Or worse... When you get positive feedback for being wrong because the people around you have built a culture around incorrect beliefs.
