✅ About this video:
Comparing RV GPS options can be a hot topic. In this video we break down some of the benefits and disadvantages to using a Garmin RV890 versus RV Trip Wizard/RV Life GPS on your iPhone. The Garmin as well as RV Trip Wizard both have an app on the iPhone where you can access a lot of great features and even help with understanding various state laws. If you are towing an RV, I encourage you to do your own research to determine whether or not you need a dedicated RV GPS. This GPS review/ GPS comparison is based on our own experiences and is of our own opinions. We are not experts; however, we want to provide you with as much as information as we can. If you are thinking about buying an RV GPS, consider watching this video. Thank you and until the next STRANGE adventure, keep making your own!

What a great video topic! One of the things we prioritized when we hit the road four years ago was having a dedicated satellite GPS specific for the RV. We, too, have a Garman and absolutely love it. It has a lot of beneficial features.

We bought the same one - upgraded from the Garmin 480. Love the bigger screen and new features. RV Trip Wizard is still used by my wife on her ipad as we travel in our rig as a second/third opinion. I highly recommend it as well! Safe Travels.

Thanks for the video! Question, I bumper-pull at 18 foot flat bed trailer with my Jeep on it. Do you have any opinion on whether this gps would be worth it for me? Or is this just not a big enough load for this sort of gps to be necessary? Thanks!

I believe when not in range of cell towers, your phone super-impose on top of offline maps your position based on its onboard GPS chip. If sky is present your position will be indicated!

So many questions left unanswered. Which solution provides the best routing? Has Garmin led you into tight spots which you suggest RV Life did? How does the Garmin do for finding fuel stops? What is the user experience like when the Garmin loses GPS signal? Why Garmin vs other dedicated GPS map solutions? etc.
@1StrangeAdventure
@1StrangeAdventure Жыл бұрын
Great questions... For Routing, the Garmin has provided the most useful information on the route. It has only let us astray once but we already knew not to go down the road it wanted us to go down. (There were signs pointing to the correct path) It does let you see fuel, restaurants, and rest areas on the screen as you are going down the road. It will also ask you if you're ready for a break after a period of time of no stops. We have not had it drop GPS signal yet so we can't speak to that. We went with the Garmin because of the reviews out there and the larger screen.

We use both of those as well. You identified a few features that I haven’t used yet and didn’t know about. We have the same RV as well. For us, the GPS has had a few roads that it took us down that didn’t have the proper clearance and has taken us down a few incorrect roads. It’s harrowing to backup that beast in the middle of the night on a narrow dead end road.

Great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If I purchase this particular gps, what is the best RV back up camera to pair with it?
@1StrangeAdventure
@1StrangeAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
Garmin actually sells a camera to pair it with. I would look into that so that you can use your GPS as the monitor. We have a separate one and I wish we had everything on one screen!

How is the Garmin in terms of traffic information and finding faster routes compared to the iPhone?
@Hundert1
@Hundert1 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts. My key main question is how easy is it to slightly change the route the Garmin sets for us? It would be great if it gave us a nice long list of several alternative route options. Can we just tap on a road or bridge we'd rather take ( instead of the road it originally wants us to go on) and the Garmin will then take us from there to our final destination? Why don't tow vehicles come with an incredible RV GPS already built in to their navigation system. Seems very odd 🤔 😕
@1StrangeAdventure
@1StrangeAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
I would love it if tow vehicles came with a trucker approved GPS and could clear my windshield of extra devices! Great questions! The Garmin does provide route options if they are available. And yes, you can alter the route to an extent. It's not totally free form but you do have a few options with it.

Great video. But I think there is incorrect information. You said that the smartphone's location system uses triangulation through communication antennas. I believe that smartphones like iPhone use GPS location. On the website, the specifications say: "Integrated GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou", these are the SATELLITE location systems that exist. In other words, they are not triangulation systems that use communication towers to pinpoint location. Please correct me if I'm deeply wrong.
@faizanjoyia
@faizanjoyia 5 ай бұрын
No you are right they do use GPS, but they also use triangulation if they can’t get a GPS signal. So in one word it’s better.

Thank you, great info. I have a question or 2, maybe you can help me. We live in New York and we're heading out West for 2 and a 1/2 months in May for our biggest trip yet. We are only RVing for one year.. We have a class C and flat tow our Jeep. We have been using Google maps and RV Life and it works good for us so far. There has only been one time where we lost our signal and got a little jammed up but nothing too serious. Going out West is another story. So we're thinking we mabey should get a Garmin. I just looked on my dashboard and windshield and there really is no room for that huge 8" screen. Even 6" would be to big. Do you think I should just get one that's made for a car? Or do you know if there are any other options? Or is there a small one that I could put in the height of my RV? I like the idea of putting in the height so it don't direct me to any low bridges. I think one that's much smaller would maybe fit ok. I don't need a big screen but I like the idea of having a satellite map instead of something that could lose the signal. I'm just looking for some advice, any help would be appreciated. Also does the Garmin have an attachment where you could hook it up to something other than the window? I'm also gonna try to call the Garmin company hoping to get someone on the phone for ideas. Thanks so much.

If you are using the GPS for RV travel, I would avoid normal car GPSs since they do not account for overpass clearance. They do make smaller versions and yes you can mount it in other ways in addition to the window suction. Hope this helps and you are able to find what you are looking for! Safe travels!

@@1StrangeAdventure Thank you for your response. Just so you know I did buy a garment and I did find a place to mount it but I ended up sending it back. I tested it in my area where I know the roads and it actually led me on dirt roads where an RV shouldn't be. It also led me on a ferry boat to get to Long Island. It was horrible. I sent it back. I'm actually in the middle of an "out west" trip from New York and Google maps along with RV life ( Which allows you to put in the height) has been fine. I think I'll be fine good with that for my RV travels. Thanks again for your response.

I’ve heard TomTom is better… like better screen performance being less janky interface than Garmin’s. Honestly, Garmin needs to reinvent themselves because with technology being what it is the screen and processor technology they’re using is so outdated. Like you could buy a brand new cheap smartphone either android or IPhone and download all the map data and use it in offline mode and it would be more compact with a quicker snappier interface. I’m pretty sure when you put iPhone in airplane mode it uses satellite services just like a Garmin would but with faster processing power and better voice recognition software. Garmin’s voice recognition is just downright terrible and they want well over $200 for some of these units?!
@1StrangeAdventure
@1StrangeAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
You are right, I think they all need a major update. With the technology that we have out, you would think they would find a way to integrate RV/Truck sizes into the Trucks navigation system or even while using Google Maps. Then we wouldn’t need an extra device in the dash. - Maybe one day 😬
