When I built my first studio I did not stagger my double wall studs for soundproofing my recording studio. This was a small mistake, but nonetheless a mistake. I am going to give you two reasons why staggering your studs is important with recording studio design.
1) Structural Integrity
I had asked Rod Gervais, the author of Home Recording Studio: Build It Like The Pros about why he recommends staggering studs in a double wall system. His answer was that overtime studs can bend and if they bend inward they could actually touch each other thus short circuiting the system. He did admit, although this is rare he has seen it throughout his decades of building studios.

2) Weaker Soundproofing Due To Coupling
I asked JH Brandt, a well respected and experienced studio designer the same question. Should you stagger studs? He also said it is a best practice in double wall design and the reason is that when studs are not staggered the drywall becomes a diaphragm that vibrates similar to a speaker cone. This pushes the air in the air cavity, which then starts to vibrate the other wall sympathetically. Once this process gets going it creates a bit of a feedback loop as well. This will weaken the system as a whole because sound can vibrate through the system more easily.
Now, damping materials like MLV or Green Glue can help reduce the vibrations of the drywall, but simply staggering your studs, even by a few inches will reduce or eliminate the sympathetic vibration between your walls.
3) A Note On R Value and Insulation
One of the reasons we did not stagger our studs in my studio is because we needed an R30 insulation in the walls for our climate. However, R Value is additive, meaning if you need R30 you can use two insulations with an R15 value or one R20 and R10. You get the picture. This means if you don't have the space for R30 you can use two different insulations in each stud wall to make it work. Another option is to use a 2x6 exterior wall and a 2x4 interior wall and this will give you more space.
Conclusion
Having two well respected studio designers teach me how I was wrong is honestly pretty cool. They both gave great and different answers for why you should stagger your studs. I hope these answers help you decide to stagger your studs when building a studio and give you the understanding on a deeper level to know why it is important.

Great vid, thanks! How much would using different thickness/weight sheathing (drywall, etc) on each side of the soundproof wall? The sympathetic resonance *should* be reduced if the 2 sides of the cavity have different fundamental/resonance frequencies.

You are right. I always lean towards more mass when budgets are small, but if you can afford say 23/32 OSB x2 and one 1/2" OSB sandwiched in the middle or even MLV that will help with different materials for isolation.

Hi, the IB3 clips you mention in your videos: When you use them to decouple the interior ceiling from the exterior, how many do you use for every square foot? or how many for a 450 sqf flat ceiling? Thanks!

I have begun the process of building my studio as close to the same way you built yours as I can. By that I mean I am on a concrete slab and I have built the outside wall, attached a double layer of 19/32 OSB to the outside and lined it with regular pink insulation. Now I'm ready to start the inside wall but I I see this video about staggering studs. I've also seen some videos by Mr. Brandt and if I'm remembering correctly I think he said two things: 1- place the inside wall studs 24" on center 2- use metal studs for the inside wall. Is this correct? If I use 24 inch spacing on the interior wall will that not create more of a diaphragm effect? I plan to use a double layer of 5/8 type X drywall for the inside.

I wouldn’t get to lost in the minutia. 16 vs 24 oc also is a structural part of the design. I use wood studs. Staggering them is better.

I’m based in the uk and planning a soundproofing project - I have access to 1/2” drywall and 5/8” SoundBloc. The soundbloc is double the price per 8x4’ sheet. I’m considering using majority 1/2” drywall doubled up because it’s much cheaper. If I were to apply some Soundbloc boards, would it be more effective to apply them inside the room or on the outside of the stud wall? Not sure how important material consistency is regarding stud walls and soundproofing

I would add an extra layers of 1/2" drywall to each side of the wall if you can afford it. With gyprock I always tend to just look at mass and don't pay too much to boards with some sort of Constrained Layer Damping System.

Hi, you mention using MLV in the video between the drywall layers. Are you now suggesting MLV instead of or equal with green glue?

No that is for an acoustic wall not an isolation wall. They are different. For my isolation walls I use just drywall and a double wall system.
