Yeah, I thought my x58 died (long story monitor actually died....) and built a x99 6900K oc ed to 4.1; my x58 was a 5670 oced to 4.45, and honestly, there isnt much a difference. Best case scenario is GTA 5 and thats like 80 fps vs 130 fps. Most games are like 20 fps boost; at what was already exceedingly playable. Wait til the stuff that comes out in a year or two either comes out or becomes cheap.

I built my first pc in 2012 I didn't know what I was doing at all and I purchased x79. I got the 4820k, 16gb of ddr3 1600 in quad channel, and a HD 7970 for graphics. When Ryzen came out the prices dropped on the CPU's and I purchased a 4960x for $200 US. I made a newb mistake buying the platform at the time but looking back I think as far as longevity goes, I couldn't have done better. Yes, the graphics card has been upgraded and I spent $200 on a new CPU along with some ssd's but I have had this system for over 6 years and don't feel I am loosing much in performance. Lucky I guess.

@@sburns015 Funny thing about the 4960X is that until Ryzen came along, and the crazy stock oc'd Intels like the 8700K, the 4960X was by far one of the best platforms for Premiere, because that app just doesn't seem to care much about more than 6 cores. I definitely can’t afford x79 right now, but you’ve been a great inspiration for me to look into upgrading my current set up to an x58 board. The used price to performance is incredible on those old rigs. That said, even if the price to performance isn’t quite there with x79, I definitely agree there is a wow factor to it and there’s something to be said about it’s relevancy as a platform in 2018 and moving forward.

1 Hows ya thumb. 2.Good video nice to see the old tech lovin' 3. As a long term user of the X boards -had X58, 79, 99 and now 299 .I have found the longevity of these units to be almost bombproof, all but the X58 system which i sold I still use today My normal way of doing things when buying for a new PC is get the best, max it out, and run it for years to come. The only problem with this is i like to keep up to date so i now have systems a lot of people can only dream about just littering the house But they are still used and outperform a lot of today's gear. I would recommend to anybody if you are after a reasonably priced second hand or new if you can get it go for the X series all the time. ;-)

Huanan X79 Deluxe is based on C602 chipset (server version of X79). It supports quad channel. The chipsets are scavenged from old server boards. The PCIe x16 slots work 2 at a time!!! I bought it for the PCIe slots to power a server of mine...

@@dfsstuff6572 , Huanan X79-ZD3 is a single-socket board though. and while some support quad-channel, and very many just claims it while not delivering it, getting that and say ECC support at the same time is even rarer. and when it comes to overclocking, the Huanan X79-ZD3 cost as much as an used Asus P9X79 board (at least with local prices) and while not new it will be far better at it and not burn up as most of the Huanan boards does after a while because of mediocre VRM's. (and OC with dual socket boards is not something you want to do with boards that can't handle extreme power loads, so like 99.9% of em) and 4.2GHz depends on what CPU you start with...

I've had my X79 Rig nearly two years, got a great deal on a rather basic X79 thing and upgraded it in all ways except for the mobo, PSU and case (love me some sabertooth stuff, and I am yet to fault my CM HAF X Case). Went from a i7 3820 with 2x4gb 1866mhz, GeForce 210, arctic freezer i30 etc to a 4930K, 24gb quad channel vengeance pro at 1600mhz, GTX 1070 with a H100i V2 to cool the CPU. I haven't even needed to oc anything yet, so I'm one happy person with this rig. In all its cost me around £800 (I were an idiot and paid £395 for a 1070 at the start of the mining craze 😑) I may get a Xeon down the line for more cores but I don't need them yet. As always, great content and I completely agree. If you can find this stuff cheap, like I did with the bundle I got and upgraded from over the last 18ish months, X79 is more than worth it 👌

When the 1366 sockets launched, i was one of the first to jump with both feet in.... and i used a few systems until the x79 solution was announced.. I purchased/built a Asus P9X79 Pro + 3930k + 4x8gb PC17000 2133mhz Patriot Black Mamba 3 Setup and with a noctua NH-D14 that was available at the time and the corsair HX1000, plus the fact that i was very heavily involved with every crossfire setup from the initial x850's through to even today with rx 500.... this system was perfectly balanced for my uses. Bios updates that added pci-ex 3.0 support, Initial SATA III support to run ssd's at full speed, and then later the ability to add a NVMe pci-ex card to boot from if need be. granted the Asmedia usb 3.0 controller performance was pretty damn lackluster, but with those 40 pci-ex lanes, i was able to snag myself a faster add-in card if need be. The system at one point actually ran 9x4TB Hitachi drives for a few years before selling them off and consolidating to WD Reds, the board ran the whole thing beautifully without error. I also have ran the 3930k at a moddest 4.3GHz overclock while still being able to use speedstep and all it's power savings functions without cooking it all. Simply bumping the BLK to 130mhz and dropping the multiplier a smidge in order to get my 4.3ghz, couldn't ask for a more stable system (granted the ddr3 had to be dropped from 2133mhz down to 2080mhz which is pretty insignificant imo while maintaining great latency). Outside of just upgrading the SSDs and HDDs along with the graphics cards, even today i really honestly have no real justifiable reason to migrate away from it just yet, and to what would i bother without feeling like i've downgraded outside of arguably the only viable option being threadripper in the 12-24 core range. I suspect that upon Zen 2's release of the threadrippers (Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series), that is when i'll consider making the move. It'll be the best bang for the buck as my 3930k and p9x79 pro board will still retain a decent value, and is still far more than usuable and powerful for pretty much anything. IMO i think this has been the most badass system i've used, and because i bought in 2011 while living canada, i got the best possible value on everything as our dollar was rather strong at that time, and shortly after buying it, everything i had purchased rapidly climbed up in value by almost 40% and remained there for years. It's only been since ryzen launched in march 2017, that the value of my 3930k and x79 in general actually started dropping. It's great that AMD's reemergence into the market with a viable contender that is doing very well, that we've actually seen a decent generation leap in performance and computing that puts a standard desktop at a performance level capable of toppling something in the higher end, while also being significantly cheaper.

Theoretical bandwidth and power capabilities I think. I ask myself the same question about USB 3.0 a lot. We still use usb 2.0 keyboards and mice and microphones with very few things actually using usb 3.0 for much of anything. The only things I really use usb 3.0 for are docks+flash drives. Then again I remember the complete objective failure of sata express, they tried really hard to put it on intel boards but I don't remember ever seeing a sata express drive released.

Still using a sabertooth with a heavily overclocked 6 core 3970X which I picked up for £80 GBP to replace the quad core 8320 core I had in... and it's still fantastic. Running 64GB ram and NMve fine and a 5700XT card and running everything at 4k... doesn't make me want to upgrade in the slightest, great article by the way!

My Asus Sabertooth x79 board is still hammering away after 8 years of use and was paired with the 3930K from day one which is OC'd to 4683MHz along with 4 x 8GB(32GB) GSkill TridentX 1600MHz @ 7-8-8-24 208 2T it was great at 1080p with my MSI GTX970 Gaming video card but several years ago I went to 1440P on my main display (3 display setup) and it had struggled to maintain smooth game play at ultra settings and had to make compromises, so I finally upgraded to an MSI RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio and no more issues at 1440p at Ultra settings. This generation of hardware was and still is great value, I spent my money right once and it has held up strong, I have had to use my Corsair warranty on my AIO water cooler H80 several years ago and my HX850 PSU which both went faulty before the 5 year and 7 year warranties had run out and Corsair sent me the new versions of both, the H80i and HX850i, and though I now use a H150i Corsair's RMA has looked after me very well and my eldest daughter has the H80i in her rig. Case is the Lian Li Lancool Dragon Lord PC-K58 Black from 10 years ago, look it up you can see the huge differences, I also cut the side panel and for $40 got a company down here in Victoria to custom cut me a piece of tempered glass. Here's a couple of pics of it. ibb.co/GQ8zKty ibb.co/pnhFKZs

The Deluxe was an exellent board. I picked one up basically new for 75 UKP (the guy had bought it only a week earlier but had since decided to switch career direction), built a PC for my brother for xmas with it, added a 3930K initially, later a 2680 v2 which was better for the tasks he mostly does. Very cost effective. This was back in the days when a juicy 32GB DDR3/2400MHz kit was only 115 UKP; memory prices today really suck.

Beautiful platform ! But this 1680 V2 damn, it put a small on my face. It's just fun to work on 7 years old platform, and making it more and more powerful (really powerful, not 10-15% etc..) + the stable support for boot NVME drives. I'll wait for your benchmarks. Thx and keep the good work.

As an X79 user for the past 5 years I agree. Using an ASUS X79 Deluxe, 3930K OC'd to 4.8 GHz, 1080Ti, two 400 GB Intel 750 SSD's (HHL), 8x2GB of 2133 G-Skill Ripjaws Z Series in a Lian Li PC-O11 ROG and full liquid cooled setup. ASUS had a competition between Deluxe vs Rampage owners to see which motherboard would get an NVME BIOS update. Deluxe won the vote, so in 02-2016 an NVME compatible BIOS was released. All around performance is excellent. I'll wait to see what Jim Keller does over at Intel before I decide to upgrade again. Great informative videos.

Hey Bryan a couple of years back I replaced my Asus Tuf gaming x79 board with my z390 mainly because my wife's computer died and she didn't want to spend money on a new computer so I did and she ended up with the x79 which she is still using now.. after seeing what you have shown in this video i am rethinking replacing this system and maybe work to get in up and running to its maximum potential.. I think its currently got a heap of miss matched ram to make up 16 gig lol with a i7 -3820 cpu.She is currently using a gtx1050Ti which she won't part with saying its good enough for what she wants lol. When I had it I knew it performed well but wasn't aware of how good the technology was back then for this board..

Still on the Sabertooth x79 here too! i7 3930k, 64gb ram, NVMe modded bios. The motherboard is showing its age though... I don't fully trust the SATA ports (had a few SSDs prematurely die and require RMA). Plus on boot up my audio sometimes doesn't work and I have to reboot to get it back... I'm not mad thought - the board has lasted 8 years and I'm writing this message on that system right now! In the end I opted to buy a good looking Huanan X79 for $150 with quad channel ram and NVMe baked in by default. Just $150 and I should be back up and running 100% again. We'll see how it goes. I also decided to grab a second Huanan X79 board - this one with dual CPU support. Grabbed two Xeon E5 2690 v2 CPUs, two nice Noctua NH-U12DXi4 fans and 256gb ECC ram at 1600mhz. Planning to do some heavy virtualization work along with some machine learning tasks. It was a difficult choice, but there is no way I could have gotten this much ram and a dual cpu server-grade system for less than a fortune. Bottom line is this platform still delivers!

1:15 - There was a period of time about 2 to 1.5 years ago when good X79 mbds were very affordable indeed, I bought quite a few of them, mostly the R4E, P9X79 WS and P9X79-E WS (average price was about 125 UKP for a WS, the R4E somewhat less, the E-WS a bit more). Best BIN deal I bagged was an R4E, 16GB/2400 RAM and 3930K for 200 UKP, and elsewhere a new in box R4E for 80 UKP. Today, the good mbds are hard to find (or expensive) whereas the CPUs are dirt cheap; even I have seven 3930Ks to sell off. :D If one can find a good mbd, the low cost of a 3930K can offset the mbd cost somewhat. Just a pity those 1680 v2 XEONs are so expensive, and alas RAM is another matter aswell, but hunt for GSkill TridentX or Corsair if you can. Note that a worthy CPU compromise is the 2680 v2, the later 10-core part; it's not an oc'able CPU, but its stock performance is pretty good, scoring 1389 for CB R15. Ref: www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/tests-jj.txt Where it suffers of course is IPC, scoring only 112 for the single thread test, but if one cares more about threads than single core performance then it's a good choice, and much cheaper than the 1680 v2; a year ago I was buying the 2680 v2 for 150 UKP each. Still, unless PCIe lane provision is important, modern Ryzen may make more sense in terms of general threaded CPU performance, but it's perhaps more fun doing stuff with something that people will insist is utterly out of date, yet often be able to beat modern systems sometimes. :D X79 holds its own because it came before the age of Intel's PCIe lane gimping with the 5820K. And remember the history of all this too, the 3930K *was* an 8-core CPU, it's just a XEON part with 2 cores disabled; Intel didn't release an 8-core SB-E because they just didn't have to, back then AMD was having problems even competing with the middling 2500K. Overall though, yes indeed X79 has still has the wow factor which has long since gone from later Intel chipsets. I have a Rampage V Extreme with a 6850K and it's just *yawn*. AMD brought the fun back in terms of basic specs, value for money, more cores & suchlike, but nothing since X79 on the Intel side has been as interesting or fun for oc'ing. Don't forget that even the baseline i7 3820 has the same 40 PCIe lanes (albeit 2.0) and many people ran them at 5GHz+. Likewise, the 4820K is a cheap option to get those same lanes @ 3.0 if the primary need is for PCIe; it's hillarious that a 4820K on an R4E can do things with PCIe that a 7820X can't. Just a darn shame the 2680 v2 isn't oc'able.

are there realy 40 PCI 3.0 lanes if i chabge my e5-1660 to an 1660 v2 or 1680 v2? now there are 32 PCIe 3.0 lanes if no other slot is used as 1and 4, or no other lane. if it is the performance falls to 2.0 and x8 at one x16 slot at the rampage iv extreme???

I commented this on fb, but I'm talking to a guy who's selling a x79 sabertooth with a i7 3820and a beefy air cooler for 175 US, now the bord is a bit damaged, it has its main pci slot missing and the audio does not work, but every thing els is fine, so i really wanna get this combo, i think its pretty cheap, since other sellers are advertising their x79 for 320+ $$ with only a bord and cpu here in Serbia. I never personally owned a x79, it was always pricey and it still is even today, so i really hope i get this deal and make use of that quad channel memory, i also have a guy selling a working i7 4820k for $60, so i hope to get both and try some overclocking and see how it goes.

@@Jonathon.Johnston Lol, thank you for reply. In my view, you didn't squeeze another 5 years out of it, because "squeezing" is meant for primary computer, when using old hardware. :) Anyway, you found a good use on it, which is cool, that hardware get use out, before it give up, and not trashed out. Btw, I share my story, which is quite funny I think. I'm squeezing LGA775 platform (Asus p5Q deluxe) for 11 years right now. Just exchanged Q6600 for Q9650 (it improved a lot, both performance and power consumption). As I've used heavily overclocked Q6600 with idle states turned off, it was burning 136W of power. I almost got heart attack, I've found it after 10 years of usage. :D Would make at least 200$ more on electricity through those years. Anyway, after upgrading to Q9650, which is most powerful LGA775 processor, I can use non-overclocked CPU to get about same performance, as Q6600 on 3.4Ghz. It has 3 ghz, but more cache, and it's somehow improved. What is good, I even undervolt it (from 1,15v to 1,07v) and it's still rock stable. I've also get rid of old Geforce 8800GTS, that I've bought in 2010 as cheap game graphic card, because I've stoped to played 3D games in 2013. It was really burner in 2D mode, and I've just swapped it for geforce 210, as it's enough for 2D adapter card. My powerconsumption went down to 79W in idle after this, and after CPU sleep states enabling, and performance stood maybe only 5% lower. That's my story of squeezing out. I need to give aplaus to that Asus p5Q deluxe motherboard, holding 11 years used as primary computer, first years on quite frequent gaming in 3D (last years mostly only in idle, or only watching youtube videos). :D
