For a very long time, the 3-point sermon has been the go-to methodology for structuring and organizing sermons for many preachers. In this video, my goal is to convince you that the 3-point sermon should go in the junk drawer of your preaching repertoire. Let's see what you think.

I only preach one point sermons mostly. The impact is amazing. So I would agree wholeheartedly.

From young, we are taught an essay generally contains and Introduction, 3 discussion points, and a conclusion. We are hard wired to understand sermons, motivational speeches, etc in this same format.

One approach to consider: Develop a strong thesis or 'Nail' from given passage after all the exegesis/study is done. Then whether you have "3 keys to..." or "5 aspects of..." or "2 abiding truths with 3 observations each" (you get the idea), every main point should be direct "swing of the hammer" to drive the nail that clearly explains, illustrates, and applies the text. So, the whole message is really saying "Believe the Gospel" or "true peace is only found in Jesus" or "God is still saving people." Then clearly apply that reality to people's lives. So what would happen if we all trusted Jesus a little more, maybe for the first, time or maybe for the hundredth? What would our fellowship be like if we embraced Jesus' power to save and transform more?

I'm an exegetical preacher. verse by verse unpacking the application from the text not just applying 3 points. I don't even say "point 1, 2, 3" just preach and let the points flush out in the text. This is also sometimes called text-driven preaching. As he states Andy Stanley has developed this method in his book called "Communicating for a Change: Seven Keys to Irresistible Communication." You will find that most reformed preachers like myself are verse-by-verse driven preachers.

it would be helpful if you can clarify what exactly you mean by a three point sermon. I find that in my own sermons I can maintain the things you're emphasizing here while organizing the sermon around three points. The three points (insofar as there are three points) should support the main point of the sermon and should be derived from the discourse of the text itself. I also find that the three points do not get in the way of connecting emotionally with the congregation. We get to the heart through the head. But I agree with the essence of what you're saying, we shouldn't cling to a three point sermon when it is at the expense of the main point of the passage.

Yes, when done with a main point/thesis and the three points driving that main point home, a three-point message is done well. What I’ve observed is the three points being a mish-mash of things that, together, don’t grab the heart and call people to urgently respond. I did a video on outline templates and show what I believe is the best way to outline a 3-point message. Thanks for your comment!

Don't take it too much to heart. It's a challenge to bear down on exegetical fundamentals (the 'what') as well as to broaden our homiletical approach (the 'how'). The 'why' is a calling from God. That's firm common ground there. I'm sure that much could be gained from checking out each other's sermons and learning from one another. We all need comradery and feedback. It's very hard to grow without both.

How many times do you Mr Young Preacher, preach per week? I don’t always preach a three point sermon but you reformed guys always think that all other preachers don’t really preach . Your talking points in this video sound as if the rest of us have no depth or application in mind .

Stop Preaching on how someone should live their life. They live life the best they can. Everyone's life is different. Some can do things while others can't. We have to live life the best we can do. I'm not rich. Others are. They worked for it. They made their lives the way they wanted to make it. I have no cars. Others do. That's just life. God knows what people needs.

Have you ever had to preach week after week, month after month, year after year to mostly the same people? I don't think that you have. The 3-points are a framework for the preacher & the congregation to hang the truth of the Scripture on, rather than just rambling around trying to say something that we believe that the Scripture says. I usually have some points (not necessarily 3 points all the time, but I do have points), because it helps me and the ones listening to follow along. There have been times that I have not used points, but they have been few. And BTW, Andy Stanley should not be used as an example to follow, since he has abandoned the Scriptures for his own interpretation. (I don't follow Andy Stanley anymore since he did that.) And for your information, you need to stop spouting off your opinions on something you apparently don't know anything about. I have been preaching for over 50 years, so I believe I know a thing or two about preparing sermons & preaching them.

Thanks for your comment, Bob. I appreciate the amount of assumptions you employed in spouting off your opinions on something you apparently don't know anything about (my context or experience). I preach week in and week out. After 50 years, I imagine that you do know a thing or two about preparing sermons and preaching them. I welcome you to write an article or record a teaching on what you have learned over those years of preaching.

@@PreachandLead Yes, I did assume you had no experience in preaching week in & week out. I garnered this from your reportoire on trying to tell preachers how to preach. There is a lot of assumptions that you have made (apparently coming from a non-biblical Andy Stanley) that you are using to frame your so-called insights into sermon preparation & delivery. I, for one, use an outline most of the time, because it helps to keep me & the congregants on track as to where I am in the sermon & how much further I have to go. Then I fill in each point with some meat from the Word of God, & I try to not only preach but to teach so that my hearers will grow in the faith & knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. This should be every preacher's goal in every sermon that he preaches - to not only preach but also to teach some truths for the edification of the body of Christ. I would say that you would do well to refrain from trying to give advice on how preachers should prepare sermons. I will give you my own life experience. When I started, I read some Scripture & on Sundays I would just open the Bible to whatever I had chosen & preach from it (a lot of rambling & chasing rabbits). When I went to seminary & took a preaching class, they had us to write our semons word for word, and then we would be taped preaching (several times). We would be critiqued by the class & the professor so that we could improve. Writing my sermons helped me to see better how to prepare my sermons, & I have used this method now ever since, though I didn't all the time have the time to write out every sermon. This has helped me more than anything else, and the outlines that I use have helped me tremendously. I would say, in conclusion, that each preacher needs to find what works for them & not try to fit every preacher into one slot. And preachers should read & listen to other great preachers to see how they did it. It may take a while before a preacher finds the best sermon preparation for himself.

I am all for outlining a message. In no way am I counseling to not do so. I also manuscript my messages and have for a long time. I, too, have been through Bible College and Seminary preaching classes where we did the same thing. It seems that the mere fact that I mentioned Andy Stanley and his preaching approach of one-point messages has you up in arms. This video was not an endorsement of any one pastor’s theology. It was a video on how best to communicate the truth of God’s word. Exegesis is one thing. How we organize the content that goes along with that exegetical work is the next step. Saying “no to the 3-point sermon framework,” does not equal, “preach heresy,” or even, “preach shallow messages.” Two sermons can have the same message yet be communicated (methodologically) very differently. And THAT is the point. Sermon organization is extremely important.
