The truth is if you are putting the bulk of your savings in a traditional savings account you simply aren’t making the best choice for your financial future. In fact, you are actually LOSING money that could amount to thousands of dollars, even millions of dollars in the long run with investing. bit.ly/31rWZNK

80/10/10 real estate equity/stocks/cash for me. My overarching rule is - don't invest in what you don't understand. I think I've heard you talk in this same light Phil. For the life of me, I don't understand how to analyze the value of a specific firm, and would fall asleep in the first 5 minutes of reading a financial report (I've tried). Real estate, I can read about all day. Gets me excited :) Totally agree, invest we must.

Nice advice again Phil. I think the biggest problem for people is the basic details of where to invest. People want to go to a simple website that is fair and clear. Something that explains where to pay, how dividends and fees are calculated and instant access to follow your portfolio. My money is in my bank account because i don't know where to put it! But man, I am desperate to invest..

My game plan is while I'm still working part time and studying in college is to save 5% per paycheck (in a emergency savings) and another 5% goes to xgro in my tax free account. Finally I pay off any full statement credit card bills and bills (cellphone, internet, and etc.) Whatever I have left I just put into a savings account and when it piles up to about 4-5k I use that to pick out individual stocks.

As a general rule Phil, you are correct about savings accounts. Furthermore, by investing now, you grow your money for retirement, and if you do the max contribution to something like a Roth, you'll grow your money substantially, granted you pick the right companies. However, your'e leaving out the fact that if you have a liquid savings account,(not a CD), that pays you 2% APY or more like wealth-front or Sofi, Discover, Barclays, and the slew of others out there, you aren't losing money if you're keeping on track with the inflation rate or slightly beating it. Also, you can't possibility put all your money into investment accounts either. People have expenses that need to be paid, so regardless, you'll need a high yield checking account and a high yield savings account, (gets back to your point about an emergency fund as well). Finally, people need to know that putting their money into most banks will lose them money, such as most major banks out there, but the exact details are key to ensuring you don't ruin your financial situation. I will fully admit I'm a financial conservative, coming from a relatively religious family, but even I know that the right companies will make me wealthy over time yet, I still need money in the bank no matter what.

Hi Phill .. thanks for your video !! I’ve learned a lot from and your daughter through this channel and the podcast .! However, this clip made me confused because the last year or so you mentioned that the stock market is overpriced. You recommend at least not to put new money in the market right now. You mentioned that great investors have a lot of cash ( maybe in saving accounts) waiting for the right time !? I have money in the market already but since I listened to your advice I started putting money aside in saving account! Can you tell me where i got it wrong if i did !?

The money in VWEHX is my emergency fund. I chose this investment because it is lower risk then a stock and I didnt want my money to just sit for the reasons you explained on this video. Still learning about investing but for me it seems like a bad idea to buy stocks right now. Prices look really high right now. It seems to be that saving right now is the best option and use that money when the market crashes. Even Berkshire H. currently holds record amounts of cash. (130b compared to the normal 30b). I've read both. Finished Payback Time about 2 weeks ago. You're going to love it. He focuses more on reducing your overall cost basis/share by waiting for your stocks to go DOWN and then BUYING A TON OF IT! I'm building up a cash reserve right now so that when that time happens, I can scoop up these wonderful businesses for pennies on the dollar...and a BUNCH of it. This is how the rich get MEGArich. Enjoy.

@@tyewarren5712 I am glad you brought up the idea of a cash supply for when they go down. I dont know how much to save for that. Does he include that in either book? He mentioned not to save unless it's for the emergency funds, so how much do you think is good to save when things go south?
@tyewarren5712
@tyewarren5712 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't think he means for us to sell off what we already have in the market (unless we are certain they are about to tank, but that's tough to know). I think he just recommends saving in a high interest-bearing (2.2% for Ally.com Savings account. Very good.) during these bullish times of overpriced markets when we are pretty certain that the entire market is about to see a large downturn. Then, the companies on the watchlist you've built will be extremely on sale. He doesn't mean that you can't find businesses with a MOS during overpriced markets, but there definitely tend to be fewer of them. I'm not cashing out, but I am going to hold all my savings in cash until the next recession hits. Hopefully it will be a year from now or so, that way I have a whole year to save and I'll have a wheelbarrow when it's time instead of a thimble. Ok, now go play. Lol.
@tyewarren5712
@tyewarren5712 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, also to answer your question, he does mention amounts in the book. He recommends not buying with any less than $2,500, because of commissions. I hate factoring in that $4.95 every time. That's why I just transferred everything over to a brokerage called M1. You don't even have to sell off your stocks. They'll transfer it all for you. Plus, you can build your own basket (called a "pie") of stocks and set the percentages of each stock you want and they'll invest it for you. It's like building your own ETF. Pretty sweet. And I guess you can own fractions of a share with these guys. Normally you have to buy full shares with most brokerages, unless it's a mutual fund. But with this, they have sort of secret proprietary something or other. Oh, and it's commission free, like Robinhood. Check it out and see what you think.

Crap, I got off topic again. Lol. In the book, a couple have $100,000 to invest, so they do all the Rule#1 research, find their company, then they buy $25,000 worth, then after a couple weeks it goes down more and they buy another $25K, etc. Breaking it up into quarters is recommended in the book. Just read it. it'll make more sense. It's called Stockpiling. Holy crap, I just now got the pun. HA!

Always knew about inflation and that a dollar today is not equal to a dollar in 5 years. That said, not only do I have an emergency fund, I also have to keep a float of $4000 in my bank account so I don't get charged a monthly fee. I've been considering if I should just pay the $15 monthly fee and invest the $4000 into something. It'd essentially mean I'd have to make 4.5% or more in order to make it worth it, which shouldn't be hard to do.

Step one: open a tax free investment account through your bank online. Find out which investment company your bank or credit union deals with. Follow the online instructions. Step 2 deposit money into the account through an online transfer. Step 3 do research into the stocks you want to buy or are interested in. Step 4 buy these stocks after checking out their 5 year pattern. You can do this by typing the stock into Google. There will be a chart that comes up with 1 day, 5 day, one month,6 month etc. Hit these buttons to get a feel for the pattern of a stock to see if its doing well. Once you have picked your stocks and the money has been transferred into the investment account then you can trade. Some simple math with a calculator will tell you how many stocks you can buy with the funds you have. Tip: the higher the price of a single stock the longer you will have to wait to make money on it.

Investing your emergency fund is a bad idea because you need quick access to cash in case of an emergency. If the stock market crashes and your unemployed for 3 months, you're out of luck.

I disagree to some extent.. inflation can't beat your savings if you constantly put money into it instead of just letting it sitting idle.

Hey Kate! Glad to hear you're getting started, no matter how small. In order to buy and sell stocks, you’ll need a brokerage account. Let’s take a look at these options: bit.ly/2jWEEHN

If you have money, you don't get handouts, the handouts are becoming HUGE. Like the $600 per week unemployment, etc. Welfare is becoming more attractive vs saving money.

Hello Phil, I have £17600 saved up in a British Virgin ISA account. Is there another place I could have my money In were I will get a good return on it? I really haven’t a clue what to invest in or how to grow my savings in the best way I can. I’m really enjoying your videos by the way.

Kind of surprised someone who clearly knows the market is on a big bubble that is about to burst would recommend you to put money in that market... If we weren’t on a bubble that would be good advice, but this video was just posted a day ago, so for me he just lost my trust. He talks so much about Buffet and how we have to follow what he does, well Mr. Buffet is holding onto as much money as he can waiting for this market to crash to then buy all the stock. This video is not necessarily bad advice, but posting it right now is the worst thing you could do.
