Studying can feel like a slog and let’s be real…it’s not the most exciting, especially when we’re studying to memorise rather than to learn. So it’s only natural that we try to spice it up by listening to some music right? Well, unfortunately this comes at a cost. Studies investigating memorisation whilst listening to music have found that the act of listening to music, especially when they contain lyrics, impairs memorisation. If I don’t listen to classical music while studying, my voice in my head gets too loud and then I get distracted way to easily. So no music is a no go. Lol

I don not have the motivation to study every day without listening to music .I force myself to study by listening to music . And I have pretty good grades . I would say this depends on the subject you are studying. Cause I need music while studying science or math but for English or history it can be very distracting . Good content though . I Enjoy these shorts .😀

Straight facts! There actually have been some studies looking into how music elevates motivation and how this indirectly helps learning! But unfortunately, the majority of studies have found this negative impact. But at the end of the day, if a system works and it ain't broke! Makes a lot of sense how music distracts the "reading" subjects, because both would be competing for the phonological loop. Study music with alpha waves can help you concentrate more... Don't use any songs... Just listen to plain music which are not popular songs...

@@emmaplayz307 i mean i don't have any friends who live nearby not like I have any close ones at all, plus I'm more of a sheltered child so I wasn't really allowed to leave much but it's alright now I'm in college and have moved out and despite of how hard maintaining basic hygiene has become, I'm doing quite well

I personally like to listen to pink noise, I.e., rainfall, waterfalls etc. I have quite a poor attention span. I find pink noise helps me to stay focused

I noticed that i can’t study with music at all if it really important. what i did before to study was write a definition down while listening to music to give myself a small break. Then stop the music when I actually started to memorize. It actually helped to not feel like i’m not getting breaks.

Depends on what kind of studying. If it's a brand new topic I def turn everything off. But if I'm more familiar with the content or just reviewing I'll turn some classical on. Or just nature sounds

THIS IS SO TRUE i always listen to music last year when i study, it's quite effective if u really are focused on the material u're studying on, but sometimes it takes away ur attention which distracts u a lot thats why i changed my ways

It depends on the kind. I usually prefer to listen to game/movie OSTs because they’re made to help you concentrate. Other times, I have to use lyrics to help myself get in the mood and I can usually tune out the lyrics 30 minutes into the assignment

I listen to phonk somehow it helps me focus more, it gets my brain and my blood pumping and I can enter my own zone when I’m studying. I become oblivious to the world around me.

I do like phonk too, I occasionally thought of depressing thoughts that make me self doubts, but phonk make me focus on the bad and the other people better life. It make me focus on the drive to better myself for it. The misery make me want to spit toward fate itself and show them all I will win this war in my own head and reality infront of me.

I, at times, struggle to work on assignments by myself without music. All the sounds around me take me off of my task and make it hard to focus, so I listen to music without lyrics (like video game music for example) or music in foreign languages (languages I can’t understand). If there’s songs you REALLY like, look for versions without lyrics, like instrumentals or piano version.

This is likely highly individualized. I for one can study quite well even with intensely lyrical music (if it is what I like). Whether it interferes with my mental voice is another thing. I can't tell sometimes when just listening to lyrical music, my thoughts drown out the songs. So yes, while it may be true for a big portion of people, they ptobably already knew.

This for me would be true in the case of history, or lit.. which i dont study anymore since im out of school 🤪 but when I’m doing maths, physics or CS i can’t NOT have some bg relaxing music or at least some fireplace sound as white noise. It helps me concentrate.

But isn't that only music with lyrics? Music like lo-fi or classical help me and many other people i know study, and don't distract us at all. Studies show that music can actually make you more productive, as well. A lot of times, I can't even work without music in the background, especially when reading. I agree with you, music with lyrics aren't the best but non-lyrical music works really well.

The problem is that I have above average hearing and so if I don’t I will hear so much other way more distracting stuff. The music lets me know what is coming so I don’t actually have to think about what it is, unlike random noises that happen around me.

The title is misleading, music with lyrics are harmful to productivity, however studies have also proven instrumental music can maximize your focus and the effectiveness of your studying

For any bilingual folks who might not be willing to let go of music (cause honestly I wouldn't get anything done without it), something that works for me is listening to music in a language that isn't that of your homework. For me it kinda just melts in the back.:) Also low volumes help.

people usually dont listen to music with lyrics i personally listen to lofi or classic but the biggest drawback is if we get used to listening to music while studying we will not be able to focus without it and i dont think you are allowed to listen to music while giving a test

Each time I study, I always turn on calm music. I can't focus without it. I've passed most tests I've studied for with music. Tests I've studied for without music, however, are tests I've failed.

For me i prefer soft classical music. But the other factor that makes music not distracting is music I'm very familiar with, so my mind don't pay attention to it. If there is novelty in the music my mind will try to decypher it.

I listen to soothing no lyrics backround music for English and it actually keeps me focused and keeps my mind relaxed and made me do a lot better on my work! (For the record I did it while studying at home not in class lol)

Ideally no music, but I'd recommend classical/instrumental music you aren't familiar with if you need something to block out noise (if you are familiar with it, you can get distracted by the tune that you know) or white noise.

I agree that listening to music with lyrics is distracting however other music can actually help because we connect music to some memories in life so if you listen to music when learning for a test, and then listen to that music again before taking the test, it could help you remmember what you have learned… but obviously everyone is different so, suit yourself

While I agree, I do use background study music for revision. It doesn't interrupt sub-vocalisation for me but rather improves it as the instrumental music calms anxieties and allows me to absorb better. So, your claim may be exclusive to music with lyrics.

best thing is to enjoy what u r doing and immerse urself in it. It’s like watching a utube vid. U watch cuz u wanna. Ofc studying isnt 100% always fun. But learning science and maths eg is genuinely intriguing and pushes the mind. Even if it gets long memorising eeverything. Read around subject. If its too noisy then put some noise blocker like natural sounds or white noise to block out.

depending what I am studying or what homework is it, if the homework is easy I'll listen to some music but if the homework is harder I won't (usually listen to classical music like Liszt, Chopin, Sibelius)
