It can be very hard to detect just how much our judgement is constantly affected by our feelings. We should - at points - take care to be very skeptical of our first impulses.

“It’s easy to grow up with a benign sense that our minds broadly offer us a reliable impression of ourselves, the people around us and the world at large. What we see, think and feel can be counted upon to amount to a more or less accurate picture of reality. We can call this optimistic thesis the ‘clear pane’ theory of the mind, implying that we are able to look out onto the world pretty much as if through an undistorted and blemish-free pane of glass…”

es, humanity is target and we do wisely in waking up immediately, to strengthen ourselves, develop, help each other to do so, and take action to save humanity, all life and Mother Earth. We mostly do not REALLY believe in and prepare our spirits-bodies for evil forces until we get our health, psyche and life stolen, crippled and/or destroyed. And relatives/friends/ good aqcuaintances don't know about that world , aren't aware enough or interested , developed, loving, courageous enough to dare face and learn about it in order to support, share, be there or even help practically. The danger is not so much the evil, but the good ones who do not interfere and who stay lazy and weak alone instead of organizing themselves as groups. as obama said in his inauguration speech, that we all shall have to make sacrifices for the future, I found it well spoken and finally someone daring to say the truth: We have to stop wasting food, misusing resources, thuink and act capitalistically-materialistically, not consume so crazily and fly. I think he meant something quite different, and got the chills.If enough of us wake up and get to work spiritually, we can change the laws for everyone to follow, and then we may all live and the end of the world as we know it be turned into a new one. But please dispose of or greatly limit your c.ell pho,ne use, it's kil,ling us all, and today, no one can evade it even. it disturbs our bodies functíons and repair, weakens and ster.ilizes, dulls our minds, harden and senilizes us as well as disturbing Vagus nerve- heart function and make us more easily stress-hateful. School of Life, I would love to see a video that explains the difference between knowledge and intelligence. If my suggestion has not been hidden by the sea of comments, I would also like to inform you that I enjoy your works and I really do feel like I have gained so much from your videos. Living in a small town gives you a limited perspective on the world. However, The School of Life videos have aided me in understanding the world, the people, as well as myself. I am sure there are plenty of others who feel the same way. Thank you for your amazing videos and thank you for reading this comment. (or perhaps my thoughts have been buried under the comments of the fantastic School of Life followers, but I'm still satisfied that I at least shared my thoughts to those on this amazing channel) Have a wonderful day!

@amanofnoreputation2164

Knowledge is a misleading term. Everything we think we know comes from our senses, which we know to be unreliable. As such, the concept of knowledge is something of a red herring; we don't really know anything. What we take for knowledge is merely the most reasonable conclusion that can be made with the available evidence: the best possible guess. Either way, knowledge is essentially information. Intelligence is the rate at which information can be processed. The faster a system can process information, the smarter it is. However, some systems are more efficient at processing certain types of information. Even very dumb computers can perform mathematical calculations much faster than any human being, but even the most advanced computers can't process sensory information the way the human brain can or make choices for itself without being specifically commanded to do so.
@BigHenFor
@BigHenFor 7 жыл бұрын
Nicole O. Intelligence, broadly speaking, is the wisdom to use knowledge in an effective way. That is why the term 'educated idiot' in a disparaging sense, is not an oxymoron. We have to be sceptical about what we think we know because our brains are limited by their biology, so it is wise to remember our limitations. Just as this video asserts.
@amanofnoreputation2164
@amanofnoreputation2164 7 жыл бұрын
***** I mean unreliable on a purely epistemic bases. Think about it: how do you know you exist? You may fell like you exist, but that's your only point of reference. "I think, therefore I am", doesn't help us here because the sensation of thinking is also just a sensation. Even if our senses are totally reliable in every way we can measure, because everything we experience is filtered through our subjective perceptions, we have no way to corroborate them. To presume that we exist is entirely reasonable given the lack of evidence to the contrary, but it is still, at it's core, an assumption. One that could be overturned at any moment by the revelation that we are all just programs in a simulation, or something similar. There's no such thing as absolute truth or knowledge.

If I get bad vibes from someone or I feel like shit talking to a person than I know that I should stay away from that individual because they are simply draining my energy. I had everything going for me: an unfathomably loyal, supportive, beautiful and intelligent partner, an impending move across the country to a good job, a happy and healthy family, and good friends. In ONE month: my father lost his job and his parents left his life, my other grandmother had a stroke, my girlfriend left me out of fucking NOWHERE, shattering the move we were going to make and destroying the job opportunity that I had. I've been fucking crushed this past month and I barely have the will to live anymore. What's the point when nothing but pain awaits you in life? Why should I form relationships when they will inevitably tear me down?

but inversely, if good situations can only turn bad, that would also mean that bad situations could only turn good. Though we all know, bad situations can get even worse than they already, therefor, while bad situations can get worse, good situations can get better. But in the end, regardless of whether or not the situation is good or bad, they both have the same end result, and that is death. So have nothing to fear. You MUST trust your feelings in life. If something doesn't feel right, it means you should go. Now, if you trust your first impression on someone, that's just because you're dumb, but after getting to know the person a little, yes, you should trust your feelings. We often ignore our feelings and stay in situation we don't want to be in (job, partner..). Your feelings are a bell. Listen to them and try to understand them.

"it is better to have loved than not at all". ones impulses of emotion can not be cast aside for ever. when the time is right, the balance of rationalism and emotion, confront your observations and separate and break down your feelings (its weirdly possible to be a mix of 2 seeming contradictory emotions). you dont have to come to a conclusion immediately. (this is all from my observations) you can get a fairer representation of your observations by asking your self the same question at different times in the day in different moods. observe your response and try and diagnose why, if it did, change. I find its easier to observe the world clearly when i know what glass I'm looking through (where the distortions/thickness of glass differ(the thickness of glass a metaphor for different emotions and the effect it has on your perception)). i however have come to dilemma with this way of going through though. you find your self unable to truly determine the true answer to your question. that is where i looked for my answer in others. having known (or to by perception i know) where i differ in observation with different emotions, i then apply this to others (a very risky move, but one which must be done over long periods of time and not judgmentally) then i can gather information at an exponential rate. being able to both test my self and other. it helped that i started talking philosophy to my friends and some responded with as much interest in philosophy as me (however this wasn't about love, it was main stream philosophy). so i search on

mmmm...i'm sorry, but: i really appreciate and respect your work. Really. And i encourage people and youtuber to support you and your channel. But, i was saying, if a video like this take 4 months of preparation (i don't argue about the money, i'm sure you are right) how is it that on your channel where published something like 5 to 6 videos just in the last week? Doing the math, you should be capable of publishing just 2-3 videos per year... Not criticizing, as i said i really appreciate your work. Just wanna understand better how youtube activities work.

I suppose there is a teamwork here. And i suppose he answered '4 months of work' given a TEAM-work. So, my question really is 'if you publish so many videos...how many people is actually working on your channel, and are all capable of living with that?' Let's suppose a team of four people per video (one writing, one drawing images, one recording audios, one editing all togheter), each finishing a video every 4 months. The channel publish, let's say again, an avarage of tree videos per week. That means something like 150 videos per year. But every team can handle only tree videos per year (12 months/4 months of work). So that means you need to have 50 team (50*3=150). If what we have supposed of four active workers per team is right, that's a total of 200 workers (50*4); that seems a little bit too much to me, due the earnings i suppose not very large from youtube... Ok, ok...i need to find a serious job ;D

What a wonderful video. We often forget what a huge impact small things such as taking naps and avoiding sweets have on our moods. Our best mood regulators are all small things like that... taking breaks from work, being in nature, doing sports or mild exercises, spending time with loved ones, changing our perspective of the everyday life, enjoying art, having a hobby, not dwelling in the past, not overthinking... They are all small things :)

Although I agree with most of what you say, reason must be tempered with a bit of irrationality. I'll just leave an excerpt from Bertrand Russell's Sceptical essays here(since no one can say it better): "Leibniz in his old age told a correspondent that he had only once asked a lady to marry him, and that was when he was fifty. 'Fortunately,' he added, 'the lady asked time to consider. This gave me also time to consider, and I withdrew the offer.' Doubtless his conduct was very rational, but I cannot say that I admire it."

This video is more relevant to impulsive behavior than emotional intelligence and paints a rather disappointingly shallow portrait of emotional self-respect. Plainly, this is only a one sided point of view and, sadly, helps perpetuate our cultural stigma against emotional responses.
@sekito2125

I wholeheartedly agree. Although TSoL usually present good ideas, this particular video that seems - at least superficially - to encourage people to doubt their emotions is simply insensitive to the amount of gaslighting already suffered by a lot of people with abusive parents, partners, bosses, friends etc. Many of the arguments presented in the video are also facts that are NOT related to emotional intelligence, e.g. Realizing the earth revolves around the Sun has less to do with doubting feelings but more to do with doubting knowledge and the established norms. Just because a person has opposite feelings in a matter of hours should in no way mean that the person should not trust his or her feelings, as there is always a reason for such a change, only that it is often unrecognized and will STAY unrecognized if the person doubts his of her feelings' reality
@hobbitkicker

matthieu rheaume - I agree especially with your last statement. I am in the US where we suffer from an "emotional anorexia" and though I saw this video as merely pointing out some faults that come with emotional reasoning, I think it reinforces the stigma that exists so strongly here. Unfortunately videos like this can be used by people that are struggling to grasp emotional intelligence to avoid that struggle and rely on logic strictly (which also has a long list of faults/fallacies). It would be great if they did a video on the faults of logical reasoning to counter this one.

There is no social stigma against emotional responses, it's quite the opposite in fact. You can readily see this on sites like youtube/facebook/twitter where emotional intuitive responses to videos/content are praised and given incredible amounts of visibility as contrasted with epistemically responsible responses. Your comment and others like it on this very video are great examples of this as well. Like many other comments like yours, you've made claims and have not supported them with clear arguments, rather you've shown your emotional disapproval of something without actually justifying that disapproval in an intellectually responsible way.
@georgiana1754

The video states that there is no way to perceive life without emotions which is why one should get exposed to something multiple times and analyze one's emotions every time before forming an opinion about that something. If it cannot be experienced multiple times than one should consider the factors that are potentially influencing their opinion about that something before stating it or taking it too seriously. I agree with you, I think emotions are very important and subtle guidelines (The School of Life states that too in other videos), but we have to admit they are also whimsical. The video is suggesting that we should apply some of the thorough analysis normally reserved for science in regard to our own feelings. I don't know about you but I call that emotional self-respect.
@thisthisthisisisismy
@thisthisthisisisismy 7 жыл бұрын
Insensitivity has no bearing on the strength or validity of the argument, in that truth is not dependent on how we feel about it. I feel that it is insensitive to for birds to fly in the presence of all who cannot fly, this feeling does not however have any bearing on the truth of the question "can I fly?". Your argument for not doubting your feelings is unclear to me, as saying that: "The fickle nature of emotional states does not mean that feelings shouldn't be trusted because 1- there are always reasons for changes in feeling 2-Those reasons will go unrecognized if those feelings are questioned" is implying that questioning your feelings, their origin, their intensity, their validity, will make it so that you won't discover the reasons for your emotional shifts, but that not questioning your feelings will let you understand that shift. Tell me, who has more depth of knowledge about a book: The person who reads it and enquires about the author, the historical context, how/why they reacted to work, how well received the book was/is , or the person who just reads it? If you want to better understand something, you question it and probe it, you do not just leave it untouched acknowledging it's presence.

Learning the difference between an external stimulus and my reaction to it is a skill I'm currently working on. This doesn't necessarily mean ignoring or pushing away my feelings, but rather noticing and acknowledging how I'm feeling, while simultaneously recognizing that it's just a feeling and that it's not caused by the slow car ahead of me, but, instead, my own reaction to it. This is how we gain freedom from our emotions without denying them.

An alternative viewpoint could be that we don't listen to our feelings enough, we have them for a reason. Often it's the thoughts and judgements that we attach to those feelings that cause the difficulties. If we can take the time and really tune into our feelings with compassion and work out why we are feeling the way we do it can give us greater insight into our relationships with ourselves and others. NVC (non violent communication) has helped me a lot with this process.

I think it's euphoric to believe I can just suspend judgment and evaluate the world around me. It feels so good that I can be so rational and not allow my feelings to be my guide. I feel good about being able to reason objectively, because to be objective makes me feel I can discover the world with more accuracy. To be able to reason through information and not allow my feelings to decide what is the case is a great feeling and comforting. It means I can learn the truth. As you see in my writing, I'm basically guided by my feelings regarding being rational and orderly in my thinking processes. The paradox of this video is that it is correct that my feelings can mislead me so I should trust logic and reason to guide me, yet it feelings that that my feelings tell me my rational abilities and logical reasoning abilities will prevent distortions in my perception. BASICALLY, feelings drive us to think our reasoning is not bias or at least a buffer against bias. Paradox

So feelings here are presented with a lens. A show of reactions, pattern, living daily life through memory rather then seeing things as they are presently. Constantly comparing, creating expectations in which one is attached to. Expecting something of ourselves, others around us, the future, living in a fragmented structure of thought. In such a state one has limited himself. To say who am I? Is to search for a conclusion, to have an image of yourself immediately limits you. To say what am I? Is to understand the human, you then will observe the body and mind. To have an image, idea, picture of yourself is to inevitably compare/measure that picture with other pictures. Its like becoming a bulletin board, an extension of yourself to compete with. Aka the ego. Im a loser, I'm a winner, words stick to me like tacks do to a board. An enormous waste of energy. To see all this is to have a very sharp, clear mind. To have care, attention, to be serious. Going through life unconscious, unaware. A dull mind. Why is one afraid to be nothing? Everyone has their petty little story. This is serious. We have created this societal structure which reinforces this kind of behaviour. We teach young people by example to grow up conforming to a pattern aka tradition. Look at religion. A a concept suspended by the human mind. All the rules it brings, the violence. Nations and their image, their pride. Rather then come together and be responsible we compete for our own personal horde of stuff.

I remember being confused and frustrated during my youth when it came to emotions, I once thought "god it would be peaceful if I was emotionless". I would be exhausted after being sad or angry which would be often. I would ask myself "Why am I angry? Why am I sad?" I directed my anger to curiosity over such things. Keeping good health such as diet, weariness, thoughts, all play a part in regulating emotions. Keep a watchful eye on these things and see what happens. Thoughts can get quite complex and I find it to be a constant source of interest. My first comment here from 2016 was of my going through what it means to say "me", "self", can one truly change? I certainly have. I was thinking of creating a new account as sort of a representation of change and because I want a new name and picture (lol) silly but hey, tastes change. I can't bring myself to do it because I have comments all over YT like this video here where years later I can come upon an old comment of mine and see how much I have changed, or not. I also have playlists of videos I have collected. I will have to look into wether or not I can change the name on this account, then again I have comments that relate directly to this name and changing it will leave the old comments confusing (lol)
