What if silence was the answer?
What if silence could help us understand our dogs better?
As I was learning more about dogs I often realized my voice got in the way of our communication. Once I realized what real leadership was all about, I challenged myself to talk less and listen more when it came to my dogs.
Talking to dogs is a way of humanizing them, and when we make them something they are not, problems come as a result of that.
By not talking to our dogs or at least talking way less, we can better learn their way of communication and form a better and healthier bond with them, nonverbally.
Dogs use their 1. nose, 2. eyes, 3, ears so it’s naturally better for us to find a way to communicate with them non verbally than verbally.
Have you for example ever been on a walk and let your dog loose. The dog is trained to come when you call his name, but this time a squirrel jumps across the road and triggers the dogs first sense, the nose. You call him, but he doesn’t listen, because the nose is screaming louder than your voice at this point, and his natural instincts are stronger than your command.
Challenge: Go seven days without using words when communicating with your dog!
Ask yourself:
How can I use my energy and my body language to communicate with my dog?
Can I get my dog to “sit” and “stay” using only bodylanguage?
What about on a dog walk? Will my dog come back to me without me calling the dogs name?
This is a great time to work on your internal struggles and be aware of how you act around your dog. How does your energy effect the dog?
