TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy Why you should want a BIGGER camera sensor in your phone! Smartphone cameras are evolving rapidly. Better software processing, better lenses, and of course BIGGER sensors. More than just resolution, there are VERY good reasons why you might want a bigger sensor in your phone. They are expensive though, so let's start with the good stuff! In part 2, we'll talk about the less good stuff...

There's one big downside of huge sensors in phones: aperture. There's a reason Sony put a dual aperture feature in the Pro-I. Unless you wish to be stuck with that shallower and more intense depth of field using a 1 inch sensor, you need to have the option to control it after some point. Other than that there's only positives. I'm just waiting for the day when a phone will come along with all 3 back sensors being 1-inch, maybe even upgraded stacked sensors like in the 1 V, that gives us completely natural colors with NOBODY'S signature, 20-bit raws, improved lenses (which no company has ever focused on and they absolutely should, except for maybe Sony Xperia and now Xiaomi) and finally the ability to choose the megapixel output count (50, 24, 12 etc) to decide YOURSELF whether you prefer sensitivity or resolution.

I think you hit the nail on the head. On this point in our phone evolution, under bright sunshine, a $200 phone will take as good a picture as a $1000 phone. It's the nighttime photography that the cheaper phone will fail miserably. However, at what point is the better nighttime picture from the $1000 phone due to software processing or the bigger sensor?

That's actually pretty easy to test too Purple Crayon. The whole point of being able to capture a TRUE RAW (not a Super/Expert/Pro/Plus RAW) is that we can pull the data directly off the sensor before ANY manipulation. From there we can find some trends in how a camera app might process that information. NONE of this is a mystery. All people need to do is try it, and show their work. I have a Xiaomi and a Vivo in front of me with 1" type sensors. I'm sure if I had some support, I could be persuaded to share some testing on that very topic...
@purplecrayon7281
@purplecrayon7281 Жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy Yes, I would love to see the results of that testing. My confusion still remains that, when you snap a picture, it takes a few micro seconds for the picture to appear in the folder where you can then view it. So, did any software manipulation/processing happens during those micro seconds, even if the pic is saved as RAW?

I decided to buy a dedicated digital camera, the Panasonic Lumix GX85, instead of a phone with high spec camera and the experience feels more rewarding. I currently have an LG G6 and I'm thinking of upgrading to either an LG G8 or Samsung S10e for the compact size, headphone jack, microSD and better cameras for those quick miscellaneous shots in manual mode. I was considering the Sony Xperia 10 IV and 5 IV but my main concern with Sony phones is the limited availability of repair services for them.

The thing with phones is that they're pretty great at the 23-25mm equivalent focal length of their main sensor (which is gradually getting even wider due to larger sensors), but once you go to any other focal length where you have to use the aux cameras, especially on the tele end, the quality is not even comparable. What annoys me about a lot of the phone vs dslr or mirrorless comparisons is that they pretend like photographers are perpetually using 24mm for all their shots, which couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, 24mm is pretty far from an ideal focal length for portraits and photos of people in general, who are probably the most frequently shot subjects on smartphones.

Been waiting for this. Pretty sure my next phone will be a 1". So far, Huawei has been able to hack some of the difference with a wider F1. 4 aperture on the 1/1.56" on the Mate 50, but it still suffers in terms of raw detail and low light versus the older 1/1.28" Mate 40 Pro. I've been impressed with the pixel level quality of the Xiaomi 13 Pro, even if the software and color aren't quite there yet, but I'm itching to see what the other upcoming 1" babies can do!
@davidletterboyz
@davidletterboyz Жыл бұрын
I suspect that is likely due to the Mate 40 Pro's Kirin DSP. The Mate 40 Pro's 1/1.28" sensor @ f/1.9 translates to a full-frame sensor @ f/6.72. FYI, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro's 1/1.57" sensor @ f/1.4 has an eq. of a full-frame sensor @ f/6. That's a respectable aperture, and is still larger than the Mate 40 Pro, and also the iPhone 14 Pro's 1/1.28" sensor @ f/1.78, which translates to FF sensor @ f/6.3.

@@davidletterboyz It is indeed impressive in terms of aperture! Only wish you could manually fix the aperture in more camera modes than Pro and Aperture. (you can't manually set it in Auto Video, High Res (Ultra Clarity) or Night modes)

Bigger sensors are always desirable and so does 1" type but why can't we have a true bayer sensors like one found on a sony Rx100 or canon G_ series? Imo quad bayer sensors are just gimmick. Another thing is lenses and post processing still does require huge improvements ( I'm craving for lumia 808/ 1020 alike photos) and lastly addition of variable aperture, mechanical shutter and xenon flash won't cause any harm.

I'm a very avid photographer and decided to get a 12s ultra with 1" sensor for my daily driver phone - and I have to say that I'm extremely impressed with it... There is a caveat that many non-photographers should know though... The software just isn't as smart as on more common top tier phones like apple and samsung... Meaning if you just grab the camera and shoot a shot on auto mode, it MAY be better, but it often won't be better than you'd get with it's competitors... BUT when you go on manual mode and shoot a smart raw image for youself with the 1" sensor, then no competitors stand a chance. So someone like myself who always shoots in raw, can have a field day with these far superior sensors.

As i say, if you choose a phone by it's camera capabilities, choose the one which can produce photos you are gonna keep, and by saying keeping i mean you will print them to an album and not storing in a hard drive. You won't do pixel peeping to enjoy their quality against an other smartphone.

When I can get a 1 inch sensor in a phone that covers 24 to 70 mm in FF terms at f/1.8-2.8 in a slim package then I will abandon my smaller M4/3 kit. That said, I doubt that a phone will replace my G9 and PL 10-25 f/1.7 anytime soon.

Sensor size > Megapixel all day long. There's no point bragging about a large three-digit Megapixel camera sensor when its effective pixel size when binned is not any bigger than a native unbinned RGB camera sensor. Also, bigger sensor size gives in more light and more detail.

@@SomeGadgetGuy great to know! These 1 inch camera phones are starting to get very tempting... The "holy grail" camera phone - that can actually replace a higher end compact camera like the Rx100 or G5x - seems to me in sight of actually existing: The Sony 989 has brought real 1 inch sensors to smartphones, Huawei has sold a phone with a 10 stop aperture and the Sony pro i has proven its possible to use real glass (as opposed to silicon) elements in smartphone lenses. If only one of the big phone brands would hurry up and put it all together in one package...
