My condolences for the loss of your Aunt. I was very sad when I lost a much-loved Aunt, so I understand completely. As for the camera, I think the 100V will go down as one of the greats. I have one and wouldn't sell it for all the tea in China. Truly a brilliant camera. Thank you for an excellent video.

Innige deelneming met jullie verlies Maarten. Fabulous review as always on a truly fabulous camera. The X100V is superb and your review encapsulates all that is special about this most engaging and gorgeous looking camera. I still have the original X100 with the wonderfully ‘soft’ sensor but this V is a quantum leap over the previous models. Thank you for your honest and detailed reviews which have formed such an important part in my camera and lens purchases over the years. Pat

I purchased the x100t after watching your review on it. I have a full frame DSLR and nice lenses, but have more fun shooting with the x100t, and even have it out today. I tend to shoot it in raw/jog mode with film simulation set to b/w (r). I also went back to DxO for raw processing as it now supports the x100t sensor. The x100v is on my wish list. I have had one of these for a year now. I fall into the category of "serious hobbyist" in that I don't make any money from photography, but I do work in the movie business (on the non-technical side) so knowing at least something about photography has been part of my job for many years. I love this camera because I think Fuji did a wonderful job of packing everything you need for real creative control of a camera into a small package that can be easily carried. For someone who wants to explore photography but doesn't immediately want to spend a lot of time buying additional lenses, filters, flashes, etc., everything you need to get started is already part of this camera. I do feel the camera shows a bit of split-personality in design. What I mean specifically is the retro-style with manual dials represents one personality, while the lack of a D-Pad and the transferring of some of the control buttons to the touch screen represent a completely different personality. So, let's call it old school vs. new school battling it out in one camera. I would also put the complexity of the menus in the "new school" category. My preference would be to restore the D-Pad (giving you another 5 - !!! - programmable function buttons), simplify the menus a LOT (c'mon Fuji, "wireless communication" which you need to turn on to connect to the app on your phone, should really be in the same place as "connection settings" shouldn't it?) and make the whole camera totally old school. Dump the touchscreen controls as they make you feel like you're interacting with a completely different device. Anyway, my opinion doesn't matter. No camera is perfect. You can get great images with a Polaroid if you know what you are doing and have vision. My only point is, if you buy this camera, know that you are getting something with different personalities and you will have to adapt correspondingly. 🤓 (Also, my condolences. It's a kind and moving gesture of you to dedicate a video.)
@MaartenHeilbron

Interesting read, good comments and observations. I completely understand the split personality - the EVF/OVF viewfinder is also a good example of that. Thanks for your kind words, and your kind thoughts - they are appreciated.

Thoughtful dedication to your aunt Lilian. A blessing, perhaps, that at, ahem, “our age” we still have relatives from our parents’ generation. For a with-me-all-the-time walk-around and pocketable camera, I have flirted with the Fuji X100 t, f and now v without acquiring any of them…so far. The v looks very compelling and you make a great case for it. Thanks as always for the video.

I attach a teleprompter and a rode NtG video mic pro to it. I also have the xs-10 with the w23 f2. But I like the sharper image of the x100v. I mainly take photos of my family, and travel with it.

First of all, I really do enjoy your videos. informative and you're personalty is very pleasant. My question is, and I think I just saw it on this video, is there no quick way to go from view finder to LCD (back monitor)? On my xt-2 there is a button that changes the view. I want to quickly go to LCD if, for example, I pull out the screen to shoot from the hip. Then, I will want to switch on the back screen. Any thoughts? Thanks again for your videos)))

You are one thorough rascal. It's a charmer, but happy I have a T-2 and the 23mm 2.0. One film type setting I think would be a great addition would be a simulation of Kodak's VPS negative film, which was the go to film for wedding photographers and studio portraits. It really warmed up skin tones toward a mix of sepia and red. (I printed it for many years in a custom lab) The only look that approached it in real life was photos taken when the sky was full of smoke. An example of it's look can be found watching Nacho Libre.
@MaartenHeilbron

Good note. I would suggest that you try making adjustments to the white balance shift. Interestingly, I've done exactly what you suggest, as I also prefer a little more red in my skin tones.

Hello Maarten, please accept my condolences for the passing of your dear Aunt Lillian. I always love watching your informative videos and this one is no exception. Thank you for not having annoying adverts interrupt your presentation. I have the X-T3 and a bunch of Fuji lenses. I also have an iPhone max which I use extensively. Aren’t iPhone cameras just so wonderful. It’s a great pity that camera manufacturers don’t use at least some of this powerful, tiny and light weight technology. Even with all of the fore mentioned I’ve always fancied the idea of owning an X100 camera to have on me all the time and the latest V model seems the best so far. I think I’d want the adapter to make it a 50mm full frame equivalent and shoot only in a dramatic mono mode. With this adapter fitted what is the max aperture please? I look forward to your next presentation even if it should be on drain pipes! 😁
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind thoughts. And for your generous comments about this video. Yes, it would be great if camera manufacturers provided the same advanced technologies that are available in phones. I discuss that here, in case you haven't seen it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oal3Y7Rzt6ypoHk.html The max aperture even with the adapter remains F2.

My condolences Maarten. Nice to see some Dutch pictures in this video. X100v is a camera I am secretly in love with (but in the all black version) as a more pockatable companion than my fabulous Nikon Z7 (the 28 2.8 seems a possible solution...). I'm also eying the Xe4 that is equally small and can change lenses. But it does not have the optical view finder and leave shutter. Choices, choices....

One problem that I would have with this camera, that I have with my X-E2 is the modest low profile eye cup. In bright sunlight the EVF becomes very hard / impossible to see. At least with the X100V you have the OVF to fall back on.

Thank you for a very thorough review. I gave up pro photography in the 80's, and so didn't really keep up with advances in digital. I still have LOTS of old Nikon and Roliflex film gear. I am looking for a lightweight digital camera which allows real manual control with great focus control. What I really care about is the glass and the sensor. Is there another camera with this quality, with less of the expensive and confusing automatic features?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Жыл бұрын
Unless you are considering the Leica, probably not. However, while all cameras seem to be complex, once you configure the settings you need, most can be operated simply and efficiently without needing to consider the other features/functions. Then, as the hardware would be identical, there's really no value for a manufacturer to remove a bunch of features. I know that I (and many of my viewers) would appreciate such a camera, but it just doesn't make sense to the camera companies.

Having video plus stills was a big draw for this camera, as was the tilt screen, better lens, weather sealing, built-in ND filter now usable for stills and video, all in a pocketable edc or travel camera. Sure I can't use a zoom lens, but this is the only camera I will use the digital 50 and 70 zoom because Fuji did such a great job with it. Love the HDR+ mode, love the film simulations. This is one fun camera, especially when you can't or don't want to bring the XT4 camera and gear. So yeah, the product designers were smart to include video...would not have bought it if they left that out.

I am big fan of X100 series. I understand well that Fuji will not make full frame camera and lenses. What's about Fuji making X100 Series in Full Frame. The size and weight of X100 full frame should be possible to be lower than Sony A7C with 35mm lense.. The concept is like Leica Q but at more welcomed price. I think it will be game changer.

It is not. I would not recommend this camera for any kind of video use, with the possible exception of some short family holiday scenes. ChatGPT creating a Fujifilm recipe for the X100V Prompt; You are a Fujifilm X100V camera photographer & expert. Please create a FujiFilm custom recipe, for my X100V for the following conditions: I am trying to create a photograph in the colour & style of Robert Capa’s famous photo ‘Death of a Loyalist Soldier’, which depicts a soldier during the famous assault on Omaha beach. Can you create this custom recipe for me and give me all the setting with an explanation of each. Also tell me how to capture a photograph as good as Robert Capa’s with this new custom recipe, and my X100V? Please make the response easy to read with spacing.

Yes .. Film Simulation: Classic Chrome Classic Chrome has muted tones and slightly desaturated colors, which should give your photo a vintage look similar to Capa's. Grain Effect: Strong Adding some grain to your photo can give it a gritty, rough-hewn look that is appropriate for a wartime photo. Color: -2 By dialing back the color a bit, you can create a more muted, somber effect that is appropriate for the subject matter. Highlight: -1 Reducing the highlight a bit will help prevent any blown-out highlights and give your photo a more even exposure. Shadow: +1 Boosting the shadow a bit can help bring out some detail in the darker areas of your photo, which is important when you're trying to create a sense of depth. Sharpness: +1 Increasing the sharpness a bit can help bring out the fine details in your photo, which is especially important when you're shooting something that has a lot of texture, like sand or fabric. Noise Reduction: -2 Reducing the noise reduction a bit will allow you to capture more detail, especially in the darker areas of your photo. This is important if you want to create a photo that has a lot of texture and depth. To capture a photograph as good as Capa's, it's important to consider the lighting and composition of your photo as well. Capa's photo is famous not only for its subject matter but also for its composition and framing. Try to think about what makes Capa's photo so powerful and see if you can replicate some of those elements in your own photo. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with your settings and try different things until you find a combination that works for you. Photography is an art form, and it's all about finding your own style and voice. Good luck! ---- Can you give me any more advice about the settings on my X100V to get a photograph similar to this? ----- Of course! Here are a few additional tips that can help you capture a photograph similar to Robert Capa's "Death of a Loyalist Soldier" using your Fujifilm X100V: Use a shallow depth of field: Capa's photo has a shallow depth of field, which means that the subject (the soldier) is in focus while the background is blurred. To achieve this effect, use a wide aperture (such as f/2.0 or f/2.8) and focus on your subject. Consider shooting in black and white: While the Classic Chrome film simulation can give your photo a vintage look, shooting in black and white can also be a good option for capturing a photo with a timeless, documentary feel. Use natural light: Capa's photo was captured in natural light, which gives it a more authentic, candid feel. Try to shoot your photo during the day and use the available light to create shadows and highlights that add depth to your image. Be prepared for the unexpected: Capa's photo was captured during a chaotic and dangerous situation, and he had to be ready to capture the moment at any time. Similarly, if you're trying to capture a candid, documentary-style photo, you need to be ready to take the shot when the moment presents itself. Keep your camera settings and composition in mind, but also be flexible and ready to adjust on the fly. I hope these additional tips help you capture a photo that you're happy with! Remember, practice makes perfect, so keep experimenting and refining your technique until you find the style and settings that work best for you. ---// Tell me more about the light in this photograph. -// The light in Robert Capa's photograph "Death of a Loyalist Soldier" is an important aspect of the image's impact and emotional power. The photograph was taken on a sunny day, likely in the late morning or early afternoon, on a beach in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The sunlight in the photo is bright and direct, casting strong shadows and highlights that create a sense of depth and drama. The soldier's body is illuminated by the sun, with the light casting strong shadows across his face and body. The sand and water in the background are also brightly lit, which makes the soldier stand out even more. The light in the photo also creates a sense of contrast, which adds to the photograph's emotional impact. The soldier's body is surrounded by bright light, which gives the photo a sense of hope and possibility, while the shadow cast by his head and the ominous clouds in the background create a sense of foreboding and danger.

If I change the wording on the Prompt to … ‘I am trying to create a photograph in the tone & style & character of Robert Capa’s ….’ I have removed the word colour. I get another Recipe Certainly! To emulate the tone, style, and character of Robert Capa's famous photo 'Death of a Loyalist Soldier' with your Fujifilm X100V, we'll create a custom recipe that focuses on a high-contrast black and white look with a slight grain for added texture. Here is a custom recipe and explanation for each setting: Film Simulation: Acros + R Filter Acros simulates the look of traditional black and white film, providing deep blacks and a broad tonal range. The red filter will help darken skies and increase contrast. Grain Effect: Strong Adding strong grain will create a more gritty, vintage look reminiscent of film photography during the era of Capa's work. Dynamic Range: DR200% This setting will help retain details in both shadows and highlights, as high contrast images can sometimes result in blown-out highlights or crushed shadows. Highlight Tone: +2 Increasing the highlight tone will add more contrast, making the image pop. Shadow Tone: +2 Similarly, increasing the shadow tone will deepen the shadows, further enhancing the high-contrast appearance. Sharpness: -1 Slightly reducing the sharpness will make the image appear less digital and more film-like. Noise Reduction: -2 Reducing noise reduction will allow more natural noise in the image, which complements the grain effect. To capture a photograph as good as Robert Capa's with this custom recipe and your X100V, follow these tips: Positioning: Carefully choose your subject and background. Aim for strong, dynamic poses and interesting environments. Lighting: Ensure the lighting is dramatic to emphasize the contrast and mood. Overcast skies or side-lighting from the sun can produce great results. Timing: Anticipate the peak moment of action, and be ready to capture it. This might require you to shoot in burst mode or pre-focus your camera. Composition: Use strong compositional elements like leading lines and the rule of thirds to create a more impactful image. Experiment: Don't be afraid to experiment with different angles, perspectives, and distances. This will help you discover unique and compelling images. Once you have configured your X100V with this custom recipe, practice shooting in various conditions and environments to familiarize yourself with the settings and how they impact your photos. With time and dedication, you'll be on your way to capturing images with the same emotive qualities as Robert Capa's 'Death of a Loyalist Soldier.' ---- Where is the R filter on my camera? ---- My apologies for the confusion. The Fujifilm X100V doesn't have a built-in R (red) filter option like some other Fujifilm cameras. However, you can still achieve a similar effect using the built-in settings. To compensate for the absence of the R filter, you can adjust the Monochromatic Color setting in the Acros Film Simulation mode. Here's how: Press the "Q" button on your X100V to access the Quick Menu. Navigate to the Film Simulation option and select "Acros." Press the rear command dial to access additional options. Select "Monochromatic Color" and adjust it to "+4 Red." This will mimic the effect of a red filter, darkening skies and increasing contrast. By following these steps, you can emulate the look of using an Acros film simulation with a red filter on your Fujifilm X100V. --- So I asked: On my X100V camera what happens if I use Monochromatic Color" and adjust Red to +4 -- If you use the "Monochromatic Color" mode on your Fujifilm X100V camera and adjust the "Red" setting to +4, it will increase the amount of red in the monochrome image. This adjustment will result in a higher contrast between the red areas and other colors in the image. The Monochromatic Color mode on the Fujifilm X100V camera allows you to create black and white images with a range of tonal variations, by adjusting the levels of different colors in the image. In this mode, you can adjust the "Red," "Green," and "Blue" settings to alter the way the camera renders colors in the final monochrome image. By increasing the "Red" setting to +4, you will make the red tones in the image more pronounced, which can be useful if you want to create a high-contrast, dramatic monochrome image. However, keep in mind that the final result will depend on the lighting conditions, the subject, and the other settings you have selected on the camera. The photo will still be in monochrome, meaning that it will be a black and white image without any color. However, by adjusting the "Red" setting to +4, the areas of the image that were originally red will appear brighter and have more contrast compared to other parts of the image. This adjustment will not add any color to the image, but it will affect the way the monochrome image is rendered by the camera. --
