Becoming famous in China is something that is best avoided, but why? Fame is cracked down on by the communist party of China if famous people speak out against anything the government deems the party line. Find out how people on social media get arrested and harassed, and how we have had to deal with this during our stay.
Hop on and find out!
Living in China for so long, we would like to share some of the comparisons that we have found between China and the west, and shed some light on the situation.
Every week, we take you to a new place in China on our bikes, cover a topic, and reply to your questions.
Tune in, hop on, and stay awesome!

When I was in university, a famous Chinese dissident was speaking at forum. There was a translator there, but whenever a non Asian English speaker asked questions, u got sense that the speaker didn't respect or value that question. When my white professor rose to ask, and spoke in perfect intellectual Chinese, the surprise was palpable. The Chinese' ethnocentric culture is embarrassing.

Unfortunately many westerners think all the Chinese people are slaving away in factory's getting paid something like 10 cent's a day and living with bare minimums in every part of life and absolutely zero privacy, even when using the bathroom. I never see that going on in the video's by serperntza or talked about. If it is going on it must be hidden. Or in other part's of China- not exposed. That is tho what many westerners think.

Chinese people making fun of foreigners who can't speak the language... I can't decide if that's ironic, hypocritical or both.
@Dowlphin
@Dowlphin 5 жыл бұрын
Probably frustrated with how difficult it is to learn their own native language, so they seek to put others down to make themselves feel better about their toil. This can happen with all kinds of things, like jobs and such. It boils down to jealousy. At the root it's just those boring standard moral weaknesses. I guess this can only (or best?) be defeated with love, but with a population size like in China that can surely become an overwhelming and draining endeavor.

@ceeceety2320
@ceeceety2320 5 жыл бұрын
@@momoko7859 You are right unfortunately. We are guilty of it here in the United States. For instance, if you're from the southern states such as Tennessee or Kentucky or Alabama, there is a southern twang. Arkansas and deep Missouri in the Ozarks there is a very distinct, for lack of a better word, hillbilly sort of accent that gets made fun of. Then you have Boston and New Jersey which both have a distinct difference from each other and different from the mid-west or even Hollywood which more similar to one another. The american television stations and movies all have what I guess would be considered as a "normal" accent here. We shouldn't make fun of anyone, but as you stated, it seems to be the way humans are. I failed to mention how we tend to make fun of the accent we get when we order Chinese food at a take out restaurant. We should rise above it.

There's a common thread, and it's all about POTENTIAL threat to State control. Too famous, or more correctly too, influential. A lot of Countries with say totalitarian regimes for example (and I'm not talking about China), make the classic mistake of pouncing on each and every adverse action or comment. All that happens is they have to devote more and more resources to this policing and the general population just gets pissed off with the regime. Usually resulting in a popular uprising at some point. I think the Chinese authorities are a lot more sophisticated than that, so a certain amount of slack is built into the system. I'ts risk/threat management, not absolute control of everything all the time mentality.

Note to anyone who hasn't watched any/many videos: The above comment by Shawn Elliott is not true. Many videos are extremely positive about aspects of Chinese culture, and many are balanced, portraying good vs bad. (WHO KNOWS? Maybe Shawn Elliott is a moron who clicks on only the video titles that sound negative, because he is some kind of drama queen craving negativity... not sure why else he would... BUT ALSO is so dumb he doesn't realize he is doing this, and then portrays his obviously biased and incorrect opinion as fact, and even goes so far as to demand a change... even though more positive videos would seem a contradictory thing for him to request, since it wouldn't help feed his apparent raging anti-china fetish...)
@Stephen_Brooks
@Stephen_Brooks 7 жыл бұрын
I only regret that Shawn Elliott probably has such a poor mental capacity that he probably won't remember his own words, and thus my response won't be able to help him. At least I can hopefully tell people the truth about the videos, and that they are not only negative and complaining.

Heck, watch the OSCARS 2016 and see Chris Rock and Sasha Baron Cohen make fun of Asians/Chinese people at a show where they are trying to be racially sensitive towards African-Americans. Ask any Chinese person if they ever feel stereotyped in Western media - it will blow your mind. You only see what you want to see.

The thing is though, white foreigners are superior in China as many Chinese women (and some men) treat them like God. If you watch other videos about white foreigners in China talking to local Chinese people, they are treated differently (mainly positive). For example, Trevor James (I think i got his name right), a Canadian food vlogger, always gets good impressions from the local Chinese. If he were Chinese, I doubt he would get good recognition. Now as for Asians living in America, we are inferiors. To be honest, we are only recognized as "Smart" minorities. But to get on TV, or to be an actor, it is very difficult. To be fair, Asian women are more privileged, as all men of all races love them; but as for Asian men, we're ranked last because we're least desirable. In addition, being famous in America isn't so great either. Once you get famous for about 2 years, then for instance you go downhill because your new movies aren't so good, you'll get videos talking about how/why you fail.

Considering America is a multi-racial country, there is no doubt there will be Asian-Americans in the cabinet and heads of ministries. Asians have been in American for more than a century, of course you will see Asians in these fields. But they are not recognized enough, that's my point. I doubt there will be an Asian-American as a US president for the next 100 years. The Asian people you mentioned are at the amount of less than 100 people in a country of 350 million citizens. Remember, China has been opened to the West for no more than 40 years. How do you expect white foreigners to be cabinet ministers, anchors of major television news channels? Not to mention China's immigration policy is hugely different than America. Nowadays, Western investments are allowed in China to make money (Disneyland, Apple, and other companies) Most modern designs of sky scrapers are designed by westerners.

***** Can't compared the 2 countries since China is too populated and has been through major recoveries 40 years ago. Hence they need to civilize/modernize the rest of the country. The USA on the other hand, has been developed for more than decades if not a century. They only have 350 million people to feed, as opposed to China's 1.4 billion people. China is still a 2nd world country, why would she welcome migrants since she still have to feed so many people?
@haha-eg8fj
@haha-eg8fj 7 жыл бұрын
US is an immigrant country. China is not. Just like Japan. It never really wants to import migrant workers even though its population is shrinking. It will ask them to leave after a few years work. In China, tens of millions of babies are born every year. There is no need to import more workers.

***** You are really splitting hair. Everyone knows the difference. 13% of US population is born overseas in 2013. Guess what the figure is in China? I would say that's less than 0.1%. But of course I guess you can say 99% white is white color and 1% white is also white color.

I don't think the make-people-look-ridiculous-on-TV thing is the norm in China. Only the comedy oriented type of shows do that, and they do that to everybody, including some of the most famous Chinese singers and actors, not just foreigners. They probably learned it from Japanese TV shows. In the example you gave in your video they aren't even trying to make them look bad, it's lighthearted and cute. Maybe it's cultural.

4:26 They were trying to make those foreigners on tv look bad and dumb. Not everyone wants to be humiliated. But then if you do the same to a Chinese or criticize them they might flip out or you get in trouble.

Great aerial shots - it adds another dimension to these already great videos! The only thing that irritated me abit were the moving black bars ... i'd say just stick with them for the whole video. The moving black thing takes the focos away from the video and content itself. Keep on what you are doing & greetings from germany!

Bet she had a name like that that's why I cant find here on google.

Can't really agree with the first two points. A bit of an over-reaction on how foreigners are made to look stupid on TV. It could be a difference in the sense of humour of the audience, being made hilarious may not necessarily be in a negative way. And if state TV is agreeing to feature you, I'm inclined to think that the long term monetary benefit from the exposure you'll gain is more than the fees they can offer you. But that said, your point about the mob mentality is spot on. Education (or the lack of) is a main reason behind it. Chinese kids are brought up in a system that trains them to follow collectively, and not to question. Many netizens are finding it easier to be on the majority side, to follow the crowd and criticize, rather than offering an unique opinion. Couple that with the nationalism waves, and being famous can indeed be dangerous, especially if you're honest about the short-comings that you've observed in the country. I also feel that a huge proportion of Chinese netizens are from under-privileged backgrounds (lower social standings, lower education etc). Basically they need to be in that virtual online space, be on the majority side and criticizing, be feeling like they are making a difference, be taken notice. A bit sad, really.

If you are invited to a entertainment TV show of a local channel, which is the most possible kind of show that will invite foreigners, of course they will make fun of foreigners because they simply make fun of everybody. And I don't think CCTV4 tried to make Austin look ridiculous in that show despite some jokes.

@ronaldreed7698
@ronaldreed7698 6 жыл бұрын
Happy Ghast of you dont understand that you dont understand the hatred of all things nazi. China is one of the few Countries not effected badly by the Nazis. Almost every Country was adversly effected as well as entire populations nearly completely wiped out. The Naxis were the reason the entire world was at war and millions of people were killed WORLDWIDE, so yeah the Nazis are definitely a very sore spot, if a Naxi group wants to hold a rally our bill of rights will allow them to and give them police protection but a private company like Facebook or the like, they dont have to give them any press if they dont want to. Try another one America hater...

Majestic Flying Brick Twitter is a private social network. You can wave the nazi flag all you want and you won't get arrested in the US. What happens if you wave the Tibetan flag or Taiwanese flag in China?
@zackp8201
@zackp8201 6 жыл бұрын
substitute nazi with Japanese and they understand the hatred exactly. In fact it's worse, because we blame the nazis which is a relic of the past, not the germans. They blame the Japanese past and present. Also, if you don't understand that in a free country, a private company can censor as much as they please, I don't know what to tell you.
@YTistooannoying
@YTistooannoying 6 жыл бұрын
Clearly you have no clue what free speech is. Twitter is not a government institution. It is a private company. Being a private company they are under absolutely no obligation to give anyone a platform which goes contrary to what they believe. It is only the government who cannot infringe on your free speech, meaning Tila Tequila cannot be arrested for giving the nazi salute. Stop being so ignorant and you won't be as angry over stupid things and understand why people get in trouble from other people for being a douche.
@_ch1pset
@_ch1pset 6 жыл бұрын
@StrangeViolette , that should be the case, but here in the United States of Exceptions, the government can and does make exceptions to constitutional rights as they deem fit. The only thing required for the US government to determine that social media are public platforms is to simply call them that, and it becomes immediately enforceable. Then comes the lawsuit arguing against this practice, and quite often, the ignorant judges and juries will rule in favor of police enforcement which reinforces these often corrupt practices. This is EXACTLY what happened with sites like Megaupload, and it IS happening to social media now. The difference is the government isn't going to shut down social media, but they are sticking their hands in a place it legally has no business in. It is true that the US government is becoming more "handsy" with social media platforms, and there will likely be some legislation passed in the next year or two regarding speech on these platforms. Hell, it could wind up being that the social media platforms could press charges on people who post content they don't agree with to their platforms. Idk how this is going to pan out, but the rhetoric that all of congress is using against facebook right now, I wouldn't be surprised if something real and enforceable comes soon. All in the name to combat foreign interference of our elections.

BUT the government would pound your ass if you say something they really don't like.

I think people who have been encouraging you guys to put up these videos on youku or somewhere else where it is more accessable by the chinese population are just saying "hey i really like you guys, I wish you can profit on what you are doing now". But on the other hand, you people probably understand more that you are doing and will decide what is the best for you and C milk too. We trust you on that. And we will always support you on that. And btw, any form of speech freedom appropriate or inapproapriate would involve both love and hatred. But ultimately it is only important if someone's speech is the truth or not. And that's why I like you guys. At least what you speak out is the the truth at your best knowledge. Big support and wish you a comfortable life in China.
