In nursing my yearly raises before the big inflation still didn't keep up with inflation. Most years you slowly make less.

So, when the next job offer comes your way, you tell the boss thanks for the experience and the knowledge, I'm leaving as I can no longer afford to work here and a better opportunity has popped up for me. Done.

If he truly adjusts to the market, and gives raises based on the cost to rehire, then he is effectively giving inflation based raises anyways, and is doing better than every company I have worked at that did give cost of living raises. Most of the increase in my salary over the years has come from needing to change jobs.

If I can get a job at another company using the skills I learned at my current company, I'm going to do that if my boss doesn't want to increase my pay. "Don't give raises based on inflation" means that I'm not sticking around. In 5 years, I've almost doubled my pay by job hopping. If I'd stayed at my first job in my career, I'd still be making very little money compared to what I make now. Corporations know this. They just don't care enough about workers to do anything about it. They're trained to care about the dollar, not the worker... until you leave. Then they act all hurt and shaken that you'd do to them exactly what you did to your last employer who wouldn't give you a raise.

First of all you don't know that he raised rent, your making assumptions. If I had to guess I'd say he probably did and that's ok. Landlords (I hate that term) provide a valuable service. They provide housing to people who cannot afford to buy homes. Imagine if renting wasn't an option. Landlords put up their own money to buy homes. Then they rent out those homes to other people. They do this as an investment, they do it to make money. They are not running a charity. They must be profitable.

They’re miserable and consistently complain about the pay, hours and lack of respect from management. They could go somewhere else.

Agree. I switch jobs, every 2-3 years (for now). I’ve never gotten a raise that could compete with the outside offer. If people do the math, they would realize that you make more money by switching jobs vs getting annual raises. My employers are ok with that, they are the ones that tend to approach me on LinkedIn, so they see my track record. As long as I’m going in and adding value/improving processes making the company better than it was before I came, I don’t need to stay forever.

Your company may perceive you as not worth the raise due to inflation but another company might see value in your work. I am starting to think it is important to switch companies every few years because some of these companies are ridiculous when it comes to salary. I saw a job that wanted a masters degree but would only pay $15/hr. You can get a job at Target or Buccees paying that much now.

This should be your yearly " step " raises. If your job does not give you a raise every year I suggest you look at another job. My job gives a 3% raise every year at my year mark. It's not amazing but it's better than nothing

You are not getting paid less dollars. Your dollars are buying less. And yes, as horrible as this might sound, you need to actually go out and get a better job overtime not stay in the same job. Being the best snow cone maker has a ceiling on income potential. If you want to increase your buying power you need to go out and get a better job.

Did you even listen to the video? If you can be replaced for $X why should an employer pay you $1.2X? If you were to leave and go to another company they would offer you $X as well. It all comes down to the marketplace. It's like saying I bought a house for $700k, spent $200k improving it so I want at least $900k. Sorry but you don't really get to dictate that, it is the marketplace. If housing drops over the board, you need to take some losses if you want to sell. Same thing for jobs. You need to take some losses on your buying power if others who are doing the same job as you are willing to get paid the same amount or even less.

When external circumstances change and we are no longer able to do so, it’s either our companies raise our wages or we look elsewhere. At the end of the day, we have to eat.

@Dementia Joe salespeople get exploited worst of all. They usually don’t have solid benefits and even if they’re a top performer they very rarely ever get a piece of equity. Most of the ones I’ve known are really passionate at first, work 50-80 hours a week grinding, and burn out after a few months.

Some sales jobs are good, but many have overly-complex commission structures to make it harder for you to get what you deserve.
