In today's video, we discuss one of the biggest reasons for a PC to start running slower with age. Hopefully this video sheds some light on some general PC wisdom I've gathered over the years!
You could have watched this yesterday. But you didn't. If you were subscribed to my Patreon you don't have to make that mistake again!!

I have a couple of things to nitpick about clock cycles and instructions at 2:45 and 2:55. Hertz, abbreviated as Hz, is a unit of frequency; it's how many times something occurs per second. A wall clock ticks once per second, so its frequency is 1 Hz. My computer's CPU clock has a frequency of 2 gigahertz, so it ticks once every 0.5 nanoseconds (0.0000000005 seconds). A CPU cycle is the time it takes for its clock to tick, not a set of instructions. It's the smallest amount of time that the CPU can recognize. Ideally, a computer completes one instruction per cycle on average. The instruction-to-cycle ratio decreases if you use harder instructions like division or if one instruction needs to wait for another to finish. But yeah, good video though 👍

Windows users on bloat: Just uninstall that anti-virus, Windows Defender is fine. Linux users on bloat: Bro, just uninstall your desktop enviroment and just use the command line, X11 alone is fine. You don't need a screen, use your imagination. In all seriousness, this is one of the reasons I changed to Linux. I started to get tired of debloating Windows manually each time I installed it on a computer. Security was my other reason, the paranoia of being spy was catching on me every time. The last one was freedom, the freedom to kill my system if I wanted to, change Desktop Enviroment, etc. I feel more secure here, like if it was my home. Windows feel like a pre-fab home if that analogy makes sense. Good video btw

One of the few things I've found able to help (at least to a small degree) is Autoruns from Sysinternals. The task manager way to turn off autorunning applications is *fine,* but this lets you, for example, completely disable Edge components (or at least a massive amount of it) from running on startup. Very nice.

It's Windows and it's bloated system and software, it's a insecure and unreliable OS. Linux is a far better solution, instead of suffering and sticking with Windows learn Linux, you will be liberated by it's freedom and getting control back on your PC.

05:01 You can delete Edge browser and with minimal effort. I've done this to Win10 distributions and Server 2016/2019 by using trick software like CCleaner. I'm sure there are others. This entire issue doesn't exist on Server Core releases so that's interesting. Since 90% of my need for doing stuff in Windows really just requires a background computer running beacon connections and storage for me to move and update a few TBs every month, a server distribution works great by stripping out most of the defaults, eliminating sluggish issues. You can only get away with so much though. At one turn I appointed a really low power+core+memory system to do all this constant lifting and back and forth, running a headless release like Nanoserver on really old junk like this works GREAT. However the barrier to entry is the highest I've ever seen even to skilled linux programmers so if you're interested in that route, good luck. It's in this case the less you know, the better. 7:35 Windows Embedded has always appeared to be a good answer in the WinXP/Win7 days but ever since the release of 8.1 and 10...Yeah it's been rough. Honestly this is something that should have been addressed and the fact that we're still talking about this today means we need to send a couple million🖕to Microsoft or the issue will just get worse. Outside of minimalist Windows configurations, the problem is this bad outright because of software bundles for OOBE and years of hype revolving around THE CLOUD. From this point on it's just chaos. 8:47 Honestly the best advice. 9:10 Inb4 rootkit... 9:20 Yup. I know this video isn't for me but every single one of us started somewhere. For me it was Win95 and constant "DLL hell" trying to fix programs that would ship short of some critical runtime files. For others it was just removing HP/Dell bloatware from a Pentium III system. There are so many OS distributions and firmware milestones that have happened since then, you guys have a LOT of reading to do and it sucks. It's boring, you just want to get things figured out but ultimately, there is no good solution. There are definitely solutions but what we agree on is that none of them are satisfactory. It's a lot of effort but there is a fast road to figuring things out and that's virtualization. 1. Get familiar with system firmware like BIOS and UEFI. 2. Get familiar with the drivers and software behaviors that load at startup. 3. Figure out a set of activities you want to do vs what can be done without your activity at the console. Sometimes you just need a 2nd computer like I do and it doesn't even have to be any good. Others need a completely separate environment from their gaming activities to handle applications for school, work, taxes, editing and all of that software is HUGE and SLOW. I load everything from a NVME that at one point ranked #2 in the world for this SKU. My developer and work environments have thrashed it to the point that things are slow again. My solution is a new disk. That might be the way you ultimately end up fixing your situation too. You just have to explore.

Even ARC GPUs are supported in the 6.0 kernel. I'm sure theres a stable distro out there that'll work. I'm currently running Fedora and I havent had really any major compatibility issues

I have a personal vendetta against edge at this point, I spent god knows how long figuring out how to completely wipe it from my computer via powershell, and then it appears when windows 10 randomly updates,(despite the fact I have disabled updates for a good couple months) so.. I redisable it,... multiple times... life happens and I can't touch my computer for a while. Boot it up again boom auto update fuck you. Edge is back shoving itself in my face. And i open Powershell and what do I find? I can't remove it anymore...

Nope, Windows eventually slows down. So just backing up your data and re-installing Windows will speed it back up. Or just leave Windows.
What happens when Windows 10 goes end of life?
