Brazil has the rice and beans because companies are forced by law to provide a meal or food tickets to their workers. Government decided it would be unhealthy having Mc D's everyday, thus their stores ended up buying equipment for making rice and beans (workers can still opt for a burger as a meal, but culturally we usually don't really consider we had a proper meal unless we ate rice or pasta with it). For a while these meals were like a secret menu thing, which popularized it to the point they added it to the regular menu.

Great comment here. I just would like to add that it is still really rare to see people go to McDonalds to eat rice and beans. I have personally never seen it, and I am (unfortunately) a 'heavy-user' of Méqui (how we call it here).

Brazil does not have rice and beans in the menu, at least in Rio de janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará or Bahia... Probably it had some time, but not anymore.

My Dad lived in Tokyo for a few months in the 1970s and being addicted to coffee and used to drinking cups all day long in the U.S., he was really glad when McDonald's opened in high-end Ginza because he could get a cup of "American" coffee for 100 yen instead of the usual 500 yen (though much better coffee) in Ginza coffee shops. He rarely ate the McD's food in the U.S. or Japan.

Jollibee is the fastest growing restaurant in the world. go try it out. the chicken, gravy, and adobo rice are great. sweet spaghetti is hit or miss depending on your palate

just wanna say that in the Philipines, we see Mcdonalds as a fried chicken fastfood restaurant. I always order chicken & rice with lots of gravy. Spaghetti in mcdo is alright i guess but it's nothing alike with jollibee's filipino style spaghetti

One thing that Singaporeans travel to other Asian McDonald's for are the burgers with pork bacon and/or pork patties :') Singaporean McSpicy still rules hands down though!

Interesting watch even though I gave up eating McDonalds back in 2007! I’m from Philippines, and I think the spaghetti from Jollibee was inspired by the Neopolitan pasta that you mentioned in your previous video! You can try it if you ever make it to a Jollibee here in Manila, Hong Kong or even back in US! I wish they opened in Japan too because I think the chickenjoy is delicious, even though I rarely have it now!

One of McDonald's most underrated amenities when it opened in Asian countries was the introduction of clean public bathrooms. Many Asian cities, even developed ones like Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, and even Tokyo, had struggled to maintain clean public bathroom facilities for years. It was not unusual for people in those cities to just go to McDonald's specifically to use its bathroom, and then order food on the way out. The success of McDonald's bathrooms pushed many Asian cities' public utilities and local restaurants to improve their own bathrooms just to compete. In Europe, McDonald's found success due to its American-style customer service. Most Europeans were used to receive stiff-lipped and cold service in restaurants, but the introduction of McDonald's casual and personable service was a game-changer and it even spurred many European service-industries to change their customer service policies.

When I was in Tokyo about 10 years ago I had the Teriyaki Burger, which was the breakfast sausage patty on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and pineapple with teriyaki sauce. Not sure if they still have it, but it was excellent. My experience with McDonalds in Spain and Scotland was the menu was exactly the same as the American menu which was disappointing.

In Portugal you have a mc bifana and canned Sagres beer (best Portuguese beer), and soups. Also the big mac and mc chicken were actually bigger (vs in the UK), mc chicken was my favourite back in the day, very tasty compared to the UK version.

There is a recently launched Jain friendly McDonald's Menu as well in West and South India which is, GET THIS, not ONLY vegetarian but also with no onion, no ginger, no garlic and no potatoes. It wild how different the McD (that's what we call McDonald's in india) menu is here in India. Fun fact, while McDonald's is now operated by one company in India, it used to be two a few year back (before they merged) operating on W&S and E&N regions. So half of India has a different McDonald's menu than the Other half. Also we sell Spicy Coke (yes you heard that right, coke with multiple spices in it including pepper, chili and cinnamon)

this video was brilliant (I can't imagine the hours of research that went into this!). however, I think you missed one of the most important aspects in McDonald's success. it's the toys that come with the happy meal. one kid goes to McDonald's. he shows up in school with the toy and brags about it. other kids will spend the whole week bugging their parents to go because they also want to show up in school with the toy. meanwhile, we get used to going to McDonald's as kids, and then as grown-ups, we crave that trademark taste and keep going back for more. at least in my experience (in Portugal) this was massive. again, great job! I have watched every single one of your videos, and this was one of the best. really had a documentary feel to it!

The USA use to have cooler McDonald's, but too many of the Themed McDonald's had issues cleaning all the nicknacks leading to healthcode violations. There is a documentary being made by some KZfaqrs. A surprising number of these McDonald's had animatronics, trains, or interactive experiences.

Philippines McDonald’s has spaghetti but also fried chicken - because of Jollibee. Jollibee had fried chicken because of KFC. Jollibee came before “McDo” so they offered burgers to eventually compete with the newcomer. Oh and McDo (and KFC) offer their fried chicken with rice (because Jollibee). When I was in Taiwan, they had the Mega Mac - I forgot if it was 3 or 4 patties instead of 2. When I lived in Japan, they had limited time special burgers that were available only for 2 weeks. And yes I’ve been to India and tried the Chicken Maharaja Mac.

I think McDonalds is very important when traveling abroad. You never know what will happen, how you will react to some food, or maybe you get sick. McDonalds can be that trusty standby that you and your body understand if the going gets tough for whatever reason. I also live in Chicago near the McDonalds Headquarters and they have a rotating Global McDonalds menu. They switch it up every 3-4 months. Right now one of the burgers is the Samurai McSpicy and it is from Thailand.

only thing with McDonald's is that, you never feel like you ate to your fullest, it's is a lot costly in India and, it goes like this, you eat a meal and you feel like you ate nothing, I have to tell them, McDonald's have perfected the fries
