So you are creative, but you feel like something is missing. Your work is not as good as it could be, maybe you are even disappointed about what you created. If not that maybe you just don’t start the book you’ve always wanted to write or play the instrument you always wanted to learn in the first place. Or maybe you throw yourself into a variety of creative endeavours but none of them ever reach the finishing line. To me these are the 3 potential problems I want to talk about in this video. You don’t start, you don’t finish or you don’t like the results. I can tell you that I went through all of them and still do at times.

On inspirations, here is my strategy: because ideas come in at unexpected moments, I would write them down when they appear and store them in my notes section [Ideas Collection]. I also try to formularize all the good ideas in a way that you can have a structure to expand one good idea. For example, I had an idea to create things with one type of plant. Then I ask myself, "what can I do with other type of plants? If I can create 10 things with one type of plant, then I probably could make 10 other things with another type of plant." This can then be applied to virtually all other elements. Another example of this is, in guitar music, one can compose using alternate tunings. One alternate tuning can make several pieces of music. In the same procedure, another alternate tuning can make slightly different kind of music. Identify elements and use each unique element in creative ways. You might find out that different elements will inspire you to do different things. It could be photography element, videography element, the raw material you are working on (wood, metal, plastic), different topics, different branches of knowledge, different style of storytelling, exploring different cultures, etc. Even if other people have already done the thing you are planning on doing, you can still modify other elements. For example, there are tons of motivational videos but perhaps you have your own style of doing it, just like this video here.

I do this as well, my issue is that when I have an idea it absorbs my mind completely, I can‘t think of anything else anymore. So I work on it basically all day and night, but lose interest / burn out from that specific idea, before the project is finished. Had this many times before. So I‘m thinking I need to surpress this impulsivity and instead work on the idea regularly everyday from 8 to 10 for example and that‘s it.

"Men of lofty genius sometimes accomplish the most when they work least, for their minds are occupied with their ideas and the perfection of their conceptions, to which they afterwards give form." - Leonardo da Vinci (whom I learned was a huge procrastinator because the ideal image of his art he had in his mind was always higher than the physical result...which is the #1 thing he recommends to have as an artist ironically). Thanks for your content, this is becoming one of my favorite channels on KZfaq right now!

Thanks I really needed this reminder right now, it really is a struggle to not quit when you feel dissatisfied with what you're doing, but there's no growing past that stage if you do quit. In a way I'm learning to convert that struggle into enjoyment, see it as a sign that I'm growing and not stagnating. Kinda like bodybuilding and torn muscles, the only way to grow stronger muscles is to let them tear and build up again and be patient against the pain, effort, and the time it takes. In a way: its your own personal satisfaction of sticking to "I won't quit" that becomes your strongest drive against the dissatisfaction of being "not *yet* good enough". Be patient, you know will get there, you must trust the process, it's the only way to actually get there. And when you inevitably feel down, remind yourself of this again. When you do, go easy on yourself, it's all part of the process, even your low days, be patient even with your frustration. About having the "taste" to tell that you're still not great, this is a thing even far outside creative work, English is my 2nd language and it's pretty different from my 1st which made learning it particularly hard, it took years for me to reach a point where I'm not constantly cringing at my own speaking/writing skills. I KNEW that I wasn't doing great, I just didn't know at the time how to close the gap, which always left me with endless frustration. But the pain was worth it, I have way more opportunities now thanks solely to having learned English when I had no reason to, I had no outside motivation, I could've quit, really glad I didn't.

I don’t know who it was it was some dude on the Internet and he said something really great that I just wish I had heard 20 years ago. He said all we control is three things: starting finishing and sharing our work. He said everything else is out of our control so there’s no need to worry about it. I think that philosophy would’ve helped me at least finished a lot of my projects but I will get so consumed with if the project was perfect enough to be a success that disco would increase and perfectionism would set in That I wouldn’t finish it.

Thanks so much! This was just what I needed to hear! I’m about to start 2023 ambitiously pursuing several projects and it’s very nerve-racking and scary but watching this video gave me a little more motivation! I can so relate to everything you are saying. You are really onto some good work here. A lot of people never really go into these creative philosophies about what it actually means to create something just so much focus on the end result and not the process.

We are chemical "machines" and horome levels play a large roll in how we perceive ourselves and others. Have a look at a connection between dopamine level when making a impulse decision and dopamine/adrenaline depletion rate while working long hours for a long time. You might be able to corelate how you felt while on vacation and how your mood went from a to b to c and so on, with how our neurotransmiting hormone levels refill and stabilize.

To your question posed to the viewers: I think having habitualized creative hours is the foundation every creator needs. But also, every creator should grasp that inspiration is perishable, and should be acted on immediately when it strikes outside of those hours. But as Pressfield says, when you show up every day to the chair at the same time, you open the gates for creativity to strike on command. PS, what happened to your twitter account?

A KZfaqr by the name of Elizabeth Filips had some interesting thoughts on working when you're inspired vs not, and she too found she did her best work when she was motivated (as do I). She wrote an ebook on it too, and it's not entirely a solution for me, but it gave me a different perspective...one of her ideas was to latch onto some of the aspects you are going to improve by doing the task, ie: if you are procrastinating on making a video, start to frame your mind to look at the benefits that are in it for you: you'll be a better video editor, get better on camera, improve your overall KZfaq skills etc. Her thought process behind this was honing in on something else besides the outcome and was directly tied to the idea of "whats in it for me?" could be beneficial in sparking motivation to get going. She has other ideas on this topic in her book and talks in general about optimizing things for someone who isn't able to be the super habitual type of worker that works no matter if they're inspired or not like all these productivity KZfaqrs try to preach. For me, I haven't entirely found the solution, but that perspective was a bit different from anything I've heard. If I ever solve this issue of procrastinating heavily (or outright quitting) on work I'm not motivated to do, I'll be unstoppable lol. Battled this my entire life, meanwhile other areas of my life are easy to stay consistent (gym/martial arts).

Can resonate a lot with that, thanks for sharing. For me fitness is also the one constant. Ran 28km through rain and wind yesterday, doesn‘t matter. Running everyday besides Monday and have no problem whatsoever to keep that up.
