Why are flights over the Atlantic Ocean so bumpy? And why is it faster to travel east than west? And why has turbulence increased over recent years? I talk to two professors in atmospheric science to find out.

This video essay about why flights have got bumpier looks at turbulence and the jet stream, and how climate change is changing the jet stream to make more turbulence on transatlantic flights. If you like videos from Our Changing Climate, Just Have A Think, Climate Town, or Wendover Productions, you'll enjoy this video about turbulence and aviation.

I used to have an extreme phobia of flying, but by learning about things like this (along with avionics and aeronautical engineering), my fear has become a LOT more maneagable. Recently I experienced a strong amount of clear air turbulence during a flight from Bali to Manila and that sent me back to my a more extreme version of my phobia - this video does help with that though. Understanding reduces anxiety.

I've been flying for....a very long time (I am probably not your typical viewer, if for no other reason than age). I've known for some time about the jet stream and why the journey is so much quicker coming back to the UK than it was going to the US (I grew up in the US have lived in the UK for over 35 years). I did not know about the additional turbulence, it must be said, but it makes sense. What else I've noticed is planes in general have got slower. I imagine that's because they are more (relatively) environmentally friendly - more fuel efficient and, crucially, typically two engine rather than four. I suspect that's the reason for the slow down - a good thing in general (I dread to think what Concorde would add to the environmental load.) Thanks for this!
