As a 100% gas forge dummy, you made me feel smart and edumacated with these two videos. Time to fix my wildly inefficient gas forge now

I could swear from my secondary physics courses (granted, 30+ years ago) that when the cross section is reduced, the pressure goes down but the speed goes up. Both don’t increase. There is always a trade. Otherwise that would be magic.

You're absolutely right, but I think I do point out in this video that I'm simplifying everything so as not to bombard viewers with detailed science. Unfortunately in this day and age, people aren't too interested in learning things thoroughly.

@@ValhallaIronworks Well, then you should go into the stochastic vectors of each gas/air particle and sum Σach of the component vectors to show why the pressure drops as the speed increases… then explain how Bernoulli’s principal is such a great emergent property model… Just kidding. Admittedly, I am guilty of the same these days. I just want to get my forge hot enough to weld. Doesn’t help that I am at 8000 feet. I think I suffer from all the problems you discuss. Albeit, mine is forced air. Cheers!

Great video, Alex! Very informative. Thanks for helping me understand the "why" and how. I'll definitely be using this information in the near future. Thanks for sharing! 👍⚒️🔥

So the restriction is creating a higher pressure and a vacuum at the same time. Nice.

Thanks for another wonderfully explained primer. I will be building a ribbon burner forge from a kit next month, and happily the ribbon burner comes with it and is highly rated by smiths I trust. However, obviously, getting it built is only part of the process, and I will take your advice on tuning it. May well contact you once it's done if I'm having issues.

i just watched your video about the ventury burners.. you mentioned the nipple being loose. been chasing a sputtering burner myself. i called BS but sure enough.. mine was loose LOL

haha You might find it funny to know that THAT SPECIFIC ISSUE happening to me is what led to my making that video, especially since when I sought help for my own problem, I called BS on the solution as well at the time hahahaha

I still have the question of what exactly happens when you have too much or too less oxygen mixed with your fuel tho. Does anyone know that and can explain it to someone who doesn't really know much about this topic? :D

Too little oxygen or too much and the combustion can't happen on a chemical level! Simple as that! Glad the video was helpful!

Put my phone in my pocket as I was about to comment on this video, not sure how the drive safe thing happened. Great information, love the video. I’ve had a bad time getting my forge to good temps. Pretty sure it’s just me not knowing how to tune. Going to try this weekend, using your suggestions. Thank you very!

cheers, great video, a confirmation and clarity of what i thought i knew. i imagine the air pressure out side the forge also has a simmilar effect on your burner. related to the amount of O2 available. no set and forget, though dialing in will be close.

Pretty much! Wind present, too, if your shop is exposed to the elements! The wind here in Tasmania is able to completely snuff out a gas forge that is at forge welding temperatures. Something to behold, lemme tell you.

So the combined areas of each outlet hole of a ribbon burner need to be less than the area of the inlet hole? And further, the consequence of getting that wrong is that in order to achieve an acceptable jet flame with a ribbon burner, you'll need to increase the volume output substantially - pushing out more air and more fuel to compensate - which works, but inefficiently?
