That's interesting phrasing, but less interesting since I already found out that many people can't pee by just relaxing and letting it flow out by itself (unless they are busting). They have to actually push, to expel the liquids, otherwise nothing comes out. Now, to get the last tiny bit out, one will have to push a bit either way, so both sides have a bit of each other's situation going on to a minor degree lol. How beautiful.

I think it might have to do with symmetry in our bodies. It's between your legs so it gets squeezed on the side and grows vertically due to less restraint

I actually ran into the explanation of this phenomenon when I was taking a course about fluid dynamic in college. This is the correct solution! I remembered the professor showed us a model simulation under laminar flow assumption (which apparently holds in this case as the shape is almost constant in Eulerian frame of reference).

I noticed from the time I was a young adult that my stream was helical and discussed it with friends but no one else seemed to have taken any notice of their stream. I’ve always described my “anatomy “ as having rifling, like the inside of a gun barrel. I love that this video now exists. Thanks for making it Steve. Now I better go get my affairs in order I guess.

Just a thought, there also is a strong correlation between the fluid flow and a gaseous flow that has also been explained as a harmonic resonance. I believe that this is a component in the steam pattern since there is a harmonic component in the body that will affect the steam follow. This flow pattern exhibits several influencers simultaneously and isn't limited to just one causel property. C

In order to see the flow patterns going on inside the buckled stream (as I would describe it) it would've been nice if you had added particles like glitter or something like that in combination with Slow motion filming to see what's actually going on there. 5:10 What I think. When we pour water from the container like jug. Water wants to come flows out in cylindrical shape. But when it leaves the container it becomes thin like a flat paper. Cylinder changes to flatten cylinder. And due to outward coming force this flat surface roates. And it keeps on rotating. You can confirm this by taking a long strip of clothe hold it from one side and turn it from other side. Like do several twist. The exact same shape will form.

Helical pee streams can have disastrous effects on aim. As the pee pulls inwards, conservation of angular momentum makes it spin *faster*. When the stream breaks into droplets down the line, individual droplets sometimes end up with a lot of linear momentum. Under the right conditions, the end of the stream turns into a kind of spray. @steve I think I can see the beginnings of this at the bottom of your helical stream demonstration, but your video just barely cuts off the breaking up of the stream.

Great video. Can you do one little trick with the rinse aid study? Maybe use a syringe and inject to one side food coloring or a few sand particles. Simply out, if it's oscillating the color should stay on the same two sides with little crossing of paths. If it's actually spinning the fluid with color / dye / particles should be criss crossing from one to the next and then the next in the same direction on the way down. Not that I don't believe it's oscillating, but I do think it would be astounding to see one side of it limited to the same two sides as further proof. It could also be done with dividers in the container and coloring only in one that's near the edge of one. Let me know your thoughts on my lunacy, My good man, if you would please!

The splash is made of pee. I brought a blacklight bulb for Halloween and out of curiosity, took it to the bathroom... the bathroom bowl was near a right angle of wall and it was speckled to hell 1. I didn’t realise pee fluoresced 2. How are you meant to clean drywall

@Sam Towers I’m assuming the black light was fluorescing the dry compounds in the piss and the water evaporated The faster something hits water, the more it behaves like a solid. To me, is like pee is bouncing off it like a rubber ball

@@peachmelba1000 Not really. It has two longitudinal planes of symmetry: it doesn't "spiral around itself". I think "oscylinder" is a fun word because it would be a cylinder (tapered, anyway) if it were not for the oscillations.

not necessarily: A pee stream is not driven by gravity alone, but also by bladder pressure. Therefore the stream will not thin and break apart because of non-uniform speed across the length of the stream. If you manage to keep the break-up forces smaller than the surface tension of the stream cross-sectional area (much easier to do in laminar flow), then you should be able to prevent the stream from breaking into droplets. Another reason the MB experiment COULD have failed would've been the "morning after" pee stream: with your stream production tool being all swollen and stiff, the equivalent diameter of the orifice is reduced enough to make the jet strong enough to make the break-apart forces stronger than the surface tension. This can manifest as a split v-shaped stream or as one that starts off as a sheet and which breaks apart further down the stream.
