I feel like this phenomenon could be expanded into art analysis videos, what makes a Pokémon designs feel like “Kanto” “Alola” or “Hoenn” and by extension, how to make a fakemon that successfully evokes such feelings.

if so it could be worth mentioning that the art style changed a lot more noticeably from gen 1 & gen 2 to gen 3. with each of those three gens, the colouring became more and more solid, so for me it was always easy to identify what gen one of those mons were from based on looking at their original artworks. gen 1 watercolours are very "shiny" looking & have more white highlights than the watercolours of gen 2 art. and from gen 3 onward the colour became more solid like digital artwork. [then in gen 6 the lineart started getting thinner]

@Fredrik Opoku yeah, a lot of gen 1 designs are more angular and spikey, too. nidoking & charizard for example really evoke this "thic spike boi" aesthetic while also having these silly triangle anime eyes. I personally think it's one part Sugimori's art style during that time and one part this "kaiju chibi" look that gen 1 was deliberately going for.

@@kingkmtso5107 well, technically Meltan and Melmetal were introduced in Pokemon GO, which is generation 6 spin-off... But spin-offs don't count - Lucario, Munchlax, Mime Jr. and Bonsly gave us a precedent

I started with Diamond and was surprised when I played Ruby the first time and found Roselia but no Budew or Roserade. Hoenn has a lot of weirdly weak one stage Pokémon, like Tropius

@Avery Bishop: I can see why that would be confusing for many people. Normally, if a Pokemon that was originally a single stage line that had no other evolutions and got both a previous stage and a new evolved form (such as Electabuzz, for example), the 2 new forms would typically be added in different generations. But in Roselia's case, it was the only Pokemon to get both in the same generation; I actually remember that when me and a friend of mine were looking at the new Pokemon introduced in gen4, he thought that Budew evolved directly into Roserade, but I looked at it and thought, "it looks an awful lot like Roselia, so I'll bet that it evolves into that one first?" It's definitely a unique case, to be sure

Was I the only person who played Silver as a kid and ran into both the first time I went into their wild areas. First time I defeated the Elite Four I swapped my Pidgot for Skarmory mostly because it had Swift. That said, I don't think a single trainer uses Skarmory in Gen 2 even in rematch battles (wait, my brother had Crystal so he fought some in the Battle Tower) so if you missed it on the route between Blackthorn City and New Bark Town you would just had a blank space in the Pokédex. And Slugma was easiest to find on the Cycling Road, not the easiest grass wild area to use, seeing how I remember it constantly trying to huck me at Fuchsia City.

I was the kid with Skarmory in silver on the playground and nobody would know what it was. It is my favorite pokemon so I'm always one of the minority who remembers it as gen 2

Yeah I like silver more too. don't know why but I like it more The only reason why i chose heart gold for my first johto playtjrough because ho-oh has the easier dungeon (for 90 percent of my ds playthroughs I use cheats to get a mon because either it's a trade Evo, version exclusive, post game only (houndoom) etc.)

Yea I don't get this problem much... it might be because when I was little and I was bored I would just look through my older sibling's gen 4 and 5 Pokedex books And I've been playing the games as they came out since gen 5.

I encountered gosifleur in gen 8 and immediately thought “oh I remember this and it’s evolution from gen 5... or was it 6?” To which my friend said “it’s a new Pokémon.” And I’m just here remembering a battle that didn’t happen, and wondering how TF I knew it’s evolution.

@@GoncaloDCa Maybe because Eldegoss is an old Cotton-like Pokemon & Ramos, the Grass-Type Gym leader of Coumarine City in the Kalos Region (Gen 6) is an old man Gardener & it would make PERFECT sense for him to have one. Also because Whimsicott is a Gen 5 Pokemon & has a similar design inspirations as Eldegoss.

Oh, you mean Jumpluff! Gen 2 filly evolved form of Hoppip, the pokemon based on dandelions and their cycle. (Just made me realize that is probably why Hoppip has a cat like tail, to make it a dande-lion)

For the longest time I used to think slugma and magcargo were hoenn, skrelp and dragalge were 7, togepi was one, munchlax was 3, and magearna was 6

Slugma and Houndour being Gen 2 shook me. I always thought they were Gen 3 until this video. What I learned is that in my mind Gen 2 doesn't exist outside it's legendaries and ironically Skarmory, and that I think all the Johto pokemon are actually Hoenn pokemon.

I'm exactly the same! I keep thinking magearna is gen 6, and I think it's because how similar it is to diancie. I blame this on the fact that from gen 6 onwards, the mythicals have no unique traits to them at all. No story, no side quest, no spin off, weak lore.

@@TheloyalArcanine well Gen 7 came out in nov. 18 2016 Volcanian and the mystical machine came out in July 12 2016 So technically magerna was revealed in the x and y, erabut available in sun and moon

Aside from skarmory, I always thought the meditite line was from gen 4, in hoenn they barely stay in my memory because of brawly, but in sinnoh you are casually just pelted by them every step you take. Medicham even becomes one of those late encounter pokémons which makes it even worse.

I get this with Togepi and Kecleon. Both appeared in the anime before their generation debuted. At least Togepi was mentioned as not being a Kanto Pokémon. Kecleon just appeared in the Johto and no one was like “wow, this Pokémon is from Hoenn/elsewhere.”

Blaziken was also in the anime in gen 2, though being a starter probably easier to remember. Same with Ho-Oh, it's probably one of the 1st Pokemon people ever saw if they were introduced to the franchise through the TV since it's in episode 1, but being a legendary and mascot for Gold people recognize it as gen 2.

@@Blaze4ification Also Blaziken shows up near the very end of the gen 2 anime. in the pokemon league. Togepi sticks with Misty for most of gen 1+ the orange league filler arc. Ho-oh also only had a small cameo in the first episode and was never even named.

But the breeding mechanic wasn't a thing in Gen 1. It was THE big thing in Gen 2, and Togepi is a literal egg. The poster child for the breeding mechanic. At least to me, Togepi is super-easy to remember.

I think the Slugma line is a prime example of a Pokemon I can never remember which gen it's from. I'm always thinking "was it gen 2 or 3". Flannery had one and that's a contributing factor to what gets me confused.

That was one Pokémon I can definitely remember the gen of... You can find it post game. Specifically at the Bike Route in Kanto. I used to play Gen 2 religiously. Had nothing better to play since my Link's Awakening DX had corruption issues. Not sure how that one happened, but the darned thing corrupted all 3 save slots to have a Link with his gear full of Roc's Feathers. And Link was somehow invisible unless you were playing on a Gameboy Pocket, or possibly a gameboy. Seeing as how I had a Gameboy "Color" (I'm Canadian, and I hate that I have to write it this way, but that's the copyright name), I had to borrow my sister's to find that out.

She actually has TWO of them in R/S for some reason. I always think it's gen 3 bc it's so easy to find in Hoenn's Fiery Path but I have no idea where to find one in Johto/Kanto.

It's not a generation mistake, but for some reason I thought Dunsparce evolved into Gligar when I was younger. They are right next to each other in the dex, both had stinger like tails and fangs, and to me, Dunsparce always looked like a pupa of some kind.

I always remember Shinx as Gen 4 because Shinx is in a relatively unique class of being an *extremely* early Electric type (I mean you can get it on the second route in the game, most second routes just have the generic bird or normal type, not something like a surprisingly powerful Electric type)

What I have trouble remembering is the type matchups for the resistances of various dual-type Pokémon. It’s easier for me to remember that I’m going to do less, or sometimes no damage to Pokémon of a particular type if I use a certain move, but it’s harder for me to remember when a Pokémon I’m using has a 4x resistance VS a 2x resistance to a given type, or if my Pokémon’s dual-typing would actually make a hit neutrally effective to it instead.

I used to have the 'i remember thinking that skarmory was a gen 3 mon' but later down the years i have started to make the distinction that it is a gen 2 and something that did help me with remembering what generation a pokemon was thanks to the anime, when every time the pokedex was pulled out it would *most of the time* mention what region the particular pokemon is from and/or some of the characters in the anime would mention what region they are mostly found in and so on also something else that did/has helped me is by playing through the gen 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 multiple times and also watching other peoples let's play/top 10's/all the wi-fi battle videos

@@justinburchette okay, so, basically, it was really easy for me to distinguish which region Basculin and Pancham came from, yet when it came to Wynaut, I got stuck. So, in turn, the punch line was I didn’t get the idea of the video until Wynaut’s generation came to question. Also, I worked with the format of Lockstin’s lines, creating a nice rule of threes format for the joke.

I swear, most gen 2 mon are just Hoenn pokemon. It feels like Johto had like 5 lines and that's it. It doesn't help that a lot of the mons are forgettable.

I'm definitely in the Skarmary group cause of that one route where you find it in RSE. But one thing I've noticed for myself is Pokemon like Slugma I associate with gen 3 not because of RSE, but because of Gale of Darkness. I didn't play gen 2 a lot cause I was pretty young still, so mons I didn't know too well get associated with Gen 3 cause of that game. Houndour is another notable one.

For me, after years of misremembering, I actually look at the numbers to figure out which region is which. Gen 1 has over 100, Gen 2 mostly has 200, and so on. Gen 5 is where it starts to get confusing, ending at 645.

not at all. gible, deino and axew are all super rare... i forget which gen axew is all the time. and since some gen5 pokemon are introduced after gen6 mons, this problem is getting bigger and bigger. which gen is tynamo? isn't cubchoo gen4? i agree with lockstin, gen1-3 is no problem and gen7 and 8 are no problem. but 4-6 has some troublemakers

Fissure Machamp CAN’T have No Guard. Abilities were introduced in Gen 3. Fissure was a TM in Gen 1. A Pokémon transferred from the 3DS release of the Gen 1 games will ALWAYS have the hidden ability. Ability Capsules CANNOT be used to get rid of a hidden ability.

I just didn't know Chingling was added in gen 4. I closely associate Chimecho with Mount Mortar, so it's very Hoenn in my mind. What got me is that I always thought Chingling would be an evolution of Chimecho because it looks more complex to me.

Pancham and Cottonee are the main ones I used to forget. Pancham feels like it could either be Gen V or VI. Cottonee because it gained the Fairy type in Gen VI and I often made the association of Fairy type=Gen VI. I haven't played much of Gen V until recently so I used to forget a lot of Pokémon stuff from that Gen. I don't have any issue with Gen I to IV, because I only started playing Pokémon during Gen IV (HeartGold is still the best) and I was 12 at the time. Plus, a friend gave me his Diamond and Perl PokéDex. That book had every information (how to obtain, learnset, evolution, etc.) about every Pokémon from Gen I to IV. That helped a lot.

That's not even comparable. You can usually use a copy of the periodic table. Nobody expects you to memorise even half of it. Lucario also falls victim to the good old "appeared in the anime before its own generation".

9:57 I think it’s also due to the color pallet. Personally when I think of gen 3 Pokémon I think of the colors red, green, blue, and yellow because a lot of the pokemon they have in the game were primarily these colors. So that might be a possibility?

The only one from the video I messed up was Wynaut, which I thought were 4. The ones I mix up a lot are more recent generations since I didn't play 3DS and Switch games and the really unpopular pokemons such as Finneon, Maractus and stuff like that. Playing rom hacks also helps to confuse you since you can get very different placements. For Shinx, I think he might be mixing him up with Manetric, since he follows the Blue / Yellow color scheme for Manetric and it isn't until it evolves he becomes much more black based. Tbh except from being cat and dog shinx look more like manetric's pre evolution then electricke.

I think almost all of mine are because of the missed game element - I had Blue and Ruby as a kid, so lots of the Gen 2 mons that show up in Hoenn are Gen 3 mons in my mind. Misdreavus, Skarmory, Xatu, Politoed and Hitmontop are all mons I always, always think are Gen 3. The only one I always get wrong that isn't Gen 2 turning into 3 is Crobat, which I swear I have vivid memories of using in Blue, janky Gen 1 sprite and all, but which obviously didn't exist until Gen 2 when Friendship was introduced. I think it's just such a natural 3rd stage evolution for Zubat that my mind backfills it.

I've had the Slugma issue before. It's mostly because I saw it so much in the same route you find Torcoal. And I did get confused about Diggersby until I remembered Bunnelby was featured in the X&Y anime. Part of the problem is that multiple generations can be in development at the same time. So let's say Bunnelby and Diggersby were made for Gen 5 but they got cut because of balancing issues. They would likely get held over to Gen 6. There is precedent, of course. Haxorus was considered as a new Pokemon for Platinum, but was instead held back for Black and White. There are other examples, but you can check with Dr. Lava on those.

Magearna was the only one mentioned here that actually got me, but I noticed another trend that didn’t get mentioned that’s just as relevant to Lucario and Munchlax as the anime factor: Lucario, Munchlax, and also Bonsly all had cameo appearances in Gen 3 spin-off games (Lucario in Mystery Dungeon, the other two in XD). I wouldn’t be shocked if some people also mess up on Bonsly and even Manaphy (the egg for which is first obtainable via the original Gen 3 Pokémon Ranger) because of these spin-off cameos.

I used to think the Diggersby line was gen 8 since it appears so often in that game, I skipped over it and a bunch of other new Pokemon in Kalos, and it's similar to the Skwovet line. I only remembered it because I got one while completing my Kalos dex later, and it's common in Pokemon Go, which only goes up to Kalos right now.

There are a few mon I forget every now and then but skarmory is most definitely the most consistent. I didn't play the main games until Gen 3 (didn't have a gb color) and only could play stadium 2 at a friend's place. So I ran into Skarmory all the time on the way to the fire gym in Gen 3, but what really did it was the anime. Skarmory is only mainly featured in 1 johto episode. But it's featured in 3 hoenn episodes including being an ace of Winona in the anime. I was convinced for years that it was a hoenn mon! It is in the legend of thunder as well but who remembers those?

Lapras is a weird one for me. I sometimes forget it's an original 151 pokemon. Since it wasn't available in the wild, it was obtained as a gift I think in the original games. And in the anime Lapras was heavily featured in the Orange Islands arc, which featured a lot of Gen 2 pokemon in general. I just find it easy to mentally lump Lapras in with other Gen 2 pokemon.

personally I associate it more with wallace from emerald cuz its his hardest pokemon. I guess maybe I've played more gen 3 than 4 and you've played more gen 4 than 3?

I associate Milotic with gen 3 with how obscure was to get and how much of a pain in the ass it was to evolve

About Lucario, in Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue Rescue Team, Lucario is mentioned multiple times as being the most legendary explorer of all time Mystery Dungeon came out almost a year before Diamond and Pearl and it only contains up to gen3 pokemon

Ok I was shocked when Skarmory and Slugma were Gen 2 I remember Flannerys slugma and The Skarmory that kidnapped May and did Steven or Winona have one I feel like they did

Steven and Winona both had a Skarmory, And it was easy to find in the gen 3 games, Add that to the fact that it was featured quite prominently for 2 episodes in the gen 3 anime and everybody was convinced this pokemon was brand new.

I used to think that Skarmory and Slugma were both Gen 3 as well, since I had never seen either of them until I played Ruby. If only Jasmine had used a Skarmory in her gym battle instead of TWO Magnemites!

I always remember Slugma in the Pokemon Stadium minigame where a bunch of Pokemon pass by and you need to click how many of whatever you see.

So Gen 7 was my first pokemon game, and when I saw makuhita I immediately assumed it was new to that gen because of how Hawaiian the name sounded to me

Fun fact: The lucario statue in Blue rescue team was Lucario's first game debut. I'm almost upset the re-release had them actually obtainable, purely because of the mew-under-the-bus agony of trying to get them in the original

I always remember shinx being a gen 3 pokémon I guess because it stands out to me as such a cool pokémon that can be found on the overpass with minun and electrike and I honestly don't remember my playthrough of gen 4 despite playing diamond pearl and platinum.

I actually had a book thing that showed info on pokemon, including what region they're from. Thanks to that and me just being a fan through the years, I know what region/game/generation every pokemon is from. Except melmetal I guess.

I always thought that Chandlure and lampent were at the latest gen 3, but I somehow just kind of knew litwick was gen 5. The later evolutions are just more iconic

Skarmory was one that I always forgot but all the others on the video I knew. But I just can't remember quilfish or porygon for the life of me! Probably cause I started playing pokemon at Gen 4 and haven't really played the older ones aside from the Gen 3 remake (which doesn't really count cause all of the pokemon are eventually in there). For whatever reason, I just forget they exist. I know they are somewhere between 1-3 gen
