Question: does Thrive market take food stamps (as Walmart and Target do)? If they do, I think you should state this in your ad (or reply here) as it’s important for poor and working class people to know this. If they had made it a 3 parter, they could have called them Wicked, Wickeder and Wickedest Crazy idea I just had: Jeff Goldbloom plays both the wizard AND Dr Dillemond! Either in a fun double casting that musicals sometimes do, OR Dillimond IS the wizard (in disguise)!

I hope we see more of the relationship development of fyero and Elphaba. The musical really rushes their romance so I’m excited to see it expanded.

The cinematographer is Alice Brooks, the one who did Tick Tick Boom and In The Heights. I am SO excited to see this gorgeous movie! I like Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero though. He’s only there for 1 second but already *acting* with his eyes 🔥🔥

As someone who has also never seen Wicked but is a big music person, I’ve gotten chills every time I’ve heard the ending riff. Cynthia’s vocals are just incredible. The trailer made me want to see the film for sure!

The trailer title card simply says Wicked, I am assuming this is a trailer for parts 1 & 2, which would make total sense. Give people moments in the trailer that they have to wait until part 2, to see.

I believe the first one will be called Wicked (without "part one" in the title) and the second will be Wicked Part Two

Yeah, it very much looks like from the scenes they showed that it is Act 1 (except for maybe that quick glimpse of Dorothy).

I think it's possible they expand the idea of Elphaba having visions of the future and Glinda in a wedding dress is just a dream or "prophecy" rather than them going all the way through Thank Goodness. I just think you need that song in Part 2 for context around the Elphaba + Fiyero plot.

I have heard from a friend of mine who is working on this movie that Dr. Dillamond is actually going to be a combination of puppetry and partial effects (no CGI) and that he’s going to be played by an English actor who is known for working with puppets on other movie and tv projects (but not a recognizable name talent)

I seen the trailer it’s good but they need to fix it up the date and the Director and it should’ve been me. I seen the show so many times and the Director should be me and the casting they should fix up the cast thing too.

I HAVE THOUGHTS. - The costuming is gorgeous. Love it. Elphie's glasses, the Shiz uniforms, Galinda's shoes. All great. - Love the look of the train and the wizard head. - The LOOK of the movie is great I think. They've obviously put a lot of thought into it and come up with a blend of the stage show, the 1939 movie. It's both classic and fantastical. - Some of the iconic lines that are featured in the trailer don't quite land for me, but I do realise that it's a teaser trailer, with maybe not final takes and cut in a way that removes them from the wider context of the scene. - Jury still out on the lead casting. They can both sing obviously but do I buy them as college age students AND as adult frenemies? Don't know. We will see. - That ending riff was a choice. I'm undecided yet whether it's a good choice or bad choice until I see how they use it. Anyway we will find out in November. I want to love it. I've seen the stage show a few times and though I know comparisons are inevitable, I'm trying to view it as its own thing.

This is EXACTLY all the thoughts I feel. It’s like the riff was a choice, didn’t add or take away, not good not BAD just… meh? And Ariana… I WANT to see her as Glinda but it’s a bit unfortunate she’s SO big you only see “Ariana playing Glinda” rather than just “Glinda”. And the homewrecking controversy really just adds an extra layer of concern (Yet Glinda BETTER have some insane chemistry with Boq in this movie then hehe) My main concern is her acting, I hope she can give us that super bubbly goofy Glinda we all know and love (without going too “Cat”) But overall the visuals, the costuming, and the story tweaks and changes seem really interesting! I’m cautiously optimistic. I’m VERY excited for the merch we’ll get though! Like imagine Hot topic casual clothing of like their “One Short Day” outfits! And dolls and stuff 😭🫶💖

I have very similar sentiments after seeing the teaser. There wasn’t much to show Elphaba and Glinda as frenemies. And the riff is a choice, but it’s such a shame because Cynthia has BEAUTIFUL melisma.

Agreed. The lack of pause between "afraid" and "of me" in the "it's the wizard who shpuld be afraid..." lost emotional impact and self-reflection

The part of me that saw wicked when I was 12 for my birthday just came out and squealed and then cried. I love this musical and I’m excited for it to come to the silver screen. I’ll be there opening weekend in November for sure!

Kat, I don’t think Thank Goodness will be in Part 1, I think this trailer was for Parts 1 and 2 as a whole, and we will see a specific Part 1 trailer later on. Here’s a few scenes that lead me to believe this, along with the fact that “Part 1” wasn’t in the title card shown.

I noticed that while editing the video! Chalked it up to adding new scenes (I wonder if the film will start with Dorothy and the Oz gang- as we go into ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’) But the idea that this is a trailer for the entirety of the wicked franchise didn’t cross my mind! I LOVE that take!

I kinda wish they kept some of the colder steampunk palette, this is looking a little glossy/too shiny. Or add in some film grain so that it isn’t so obviously artificial.

I really hate that they aren't marketing this as a "part 1", that's probably my biggest gripe. I think the only other thing that is concerning to me is Ariana as Galinda. I'm going to give her a chance, but she's such a powerhouse that its hard for me to actually imagine her AS the character instead of just in damn good cosplay. Definitely am looking forward to a trailer that has more verbal acting in it for sure. Great art direction, costuming, etc. Would have enjoyed less of a CGI look, but if a film is going to go all out in unreality, it might as well be Wicked.

The production design is INCREDIBLE!! The one thing that really concerns me is the line delivery. I really hope they don't make Elphaba into a confident girlboss. The main appeal of her character is that she's an underdog and really very fearful. When she says "it's the wizard who should be afraid of me" (in the Broadway production) her voice is trembling and the magic of the song is her transformation into embracing her truth no matter how scared she is. I'm nervous if this performance will be able to capture the heart of the original. But I'm optimistic 😊

I agree! I really hope so too. Elphaba’s supposed to be hot-headed, fiesty and witty and I hope they don’t change that. Also when she says “I am!” responding to Ariana telling her she’s green, it didn’t seem like Elphaba, but it might be her saying it sarcastically so who knows lol.

I've talked to my non-theater fans about this and they said it looked tacky... I disagree with them!! After waiting for this movie for YEARS, i'm not upset over this!!! the sets, the costumes, and the cinematography are INCREDIBLE!!!! I'm excited to see them expand on the story and for the new parts!!!

Why do people keep predicting that Defying Gravity isn't where the first movie stops when that's one of main reasons we're even getting two films? Like, if the film could still work with something following Defying Gravity, they would've just made one massive film.

Bowen Yang said in an interview (maybe Playbill idk) that they have a female Dillamond who will just be doing voicework and they used a stand-in linw reader on set. Mayhaps we see a Kristin or Idina as Dr Dillamond

@@Kath_Steele Sorry to disappoint. Dillamond is played by an unknown costume/puppet/stop motion actor. Both IM and KC are in the film, and they're both in the same scene. It was the very last thing they filmed before the Writers Guild strike stopped production......

@@lonellfletcher You can hear singing, sure, but lots of trailers for non-musical movies have songs with words playing in the background that aren't actually in the movie. The one that first comes to mind is "I've Got No Strings" in the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer. We can hear singing in this trailer, but we don't actually /see/ anyone (Elphaba or otherwise) singing.

The sets do look absolutely stunning, and I find it interesting that they seem to be taking more inspiration from the Oz we know from Baum's books/the Wizard of Oz movie, with only a little bit of the fantastical steampunk look that the theatrical version leaned on. Dorothy is also using silver slippers instead of ruby ones... but the magical bubble for Glinda, which originated from the Oz film, remains (probably because we do still have the WE CAN'T ALL COME AND GO BY BUBBLE moment). I will admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Grande being casted as Glinda. While she's a talented singer, I didn't think she had any kind of a classically trained soprano voice (and I was proven wrong by a video released last year of her singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow! She's definitely been practicing and sounds much better than I expected!), and I did feel that her acting skills were absolutely lacking (from seeing her in Hairspray). But I was actually pleasantly surprised by most of her work in this trailer. It's not much, but she's giving me far more Galinda-vibes than I thought she'd be capable of. The only exception is the Defying Gravity scene... Her "Don't be afraid" felt so.... unsuitable for that scene. Perhaps the context of that line has been slightly changed, perhaps it was the director's choice, but the original line was said by a frightened Galinda, trying to comfort Elphaba (and perhaps herself as well), so... why does she look like she has a light smile on her face? ^^; Also not sure about the Pink-Prom-Dress design (or the modern wedding dress)... Especially against the backdrop of everything else being closer to Edwardian fashion (which Susan Hilferty referenced for the musical). Michelle Yeoh looks fantastic, loving the asymmetrical collar, but I'll cry if she doesn't get at least one outfit with a big furry/feathery collar 8'D Praying that the music in the trailer was edited and mixed by marketing folks and isn't what we'll get in the actual movie, because it's sounding pretty badly compressed at the moment 😢 Thanks for the reaction! Snickered at the dil-mand pun HAHA

The trailer got and gets me emotional, as Wicked is a show that means a lot to me, and I can tell from the trailer the care that has been put into the Wicked movies!!

So gorgeous! Along with In The Heights, I’ve waited so long for this movie. I’m reserving my judgement though on Cynthia’s vocal riff until we see the finished cut of Defying Gravity. And I was surprised Michelle Yeoh was cast as Morrible!

The creatives have already confirmed that Defying Gravity will be ending the first film. This seemed to be a first look at both parts. That said, this trailer is EVERYTHING

I’m excited but also nervous because Wicked is my favorite musical and I’ve seen it many times. Since I’m a huge fan of Wicked, I’ll probably see it when it first comes out. I really hope it does it justice and expands and improves like the hairspray movie did.

I can't believe the marketing team at Universal is still trying to trick people into thinking this is not a musical with this trailer...as if this a) hasn't been running on Broadway for 20 years and b) is a prequel to an iconic film that is ALSO A MUSICAL. Like...huh?

Well, it’s a first look teaser and it isn’t a complete trick considering that there is singing in the trailer right out of the gate even though we still don’t see people actually singing. I’m hoping we are actually going to get more content through the marketing, indicating it is a musical when we get closer to the release date. Also, I am pretty sure the marketing team is afraid to show it is a musical right off the bat considering that not only musicals aren’t really appealing to everyone’s niche but also because of the disaster that was the Cats movie that came from them. So best to keep it in the dark that it is a musical for the time being.

Yeah I agree with the Dr. Dillamond fear. I think there were rumors of a puppeteer cast for the character(not sure how that would even work), but it could absolutely end up being Cats 2.0. At least he’s only in a couple of scenes…

I did not know this was gonna be a 2-parter and I dunno how I feel about that. Like yeah it’s great to be able to tell the entire story, but act 2 of Wicked is significantly worse and doesn’t have as many thrilling moments than act 1 (plus the really ableist shoes scene). They’re gonna have to do a lot of rewrites to pad it for time and make it more adaptable to film.

This looks gorgeous!! It does make sense that you mentioned Defying Gravity not being the end of the movie. In musical theater, we generally want to build towards a big climax before intermission. To end a movie at that climax would be strange. So you got to come back from it, and do the beginning of Act II. This is also part of the musical where we see the more political side of Glinda. When you think about the fact 1. They are building out more characters in the movie than the stage show (more characters, more potentials to divide them up into factions and pit against each other) 2. Act II of the stage show was already shorter, and now there's even less because part of it is going to be in the first movie, so you need to pull from the original novels 3. Original novels have way more political elements than what made it into the stage show Combine all these things together and we can most certainly say it's going to be more political, and I think we will see even more of Glinda and Morrible because they play in that arena - I find that exciting, actually. The music for the ad segment is pretty fire. "Hairspray... just the product" LOL that we had to specify.

I like Glinda’s dress. It’s almost like they looked at the Brazilian production of wicked and took inspiration. Also, the train looks very similar to the train in the Hamburg production 🥰🥰🥰

That'd be tricky. A lot of the differences between book and musical fall less into the category of "elided" and more into "couldn't have happened in the first place." The whole back half of the the book, with Fiyero's wives, doesn't make sense with a Glinda/Elphaba/Fiyero love triangle. The "allergy to water" from the book is played a lot differently on stage. The Boq/Nessa relationship was added to make the reveal that he's actually [SPOILER] make sense, but in the book (and in the original L. Frank Baum version), they're two completely separate characters. And don't get me started about the Wizard. I'm sure they can pick up some details from the book to add to the movie (maybe the Clock of the Time Dragon?), but a lot of them just plain wouldn't fit without completely rewriting the book and ditching half of the musical numbers.

I thought this would lean more into the book but now it seems to be leaning more into the OG MGM movie. The casting is so good and the scenery and special effects in this movie blow my mind (lowkey better then any other movie set in OZ I’ve seen). I thought I heard Brian Cox was playing Dillamond but I might be going insane on that one. ❤!

Everyone focuses on how they are kinda hiding the musical aspect of the movie, but the fact they neglect to call it Wicked Part I, seems like they are trying to trick people into believing it's the complete movie, because they know a lot of people will be turned off by it being a two-parter.

I don't thinking they will mix both acts, I believe that this first look is just like the first "Deathly Hallows" trailer. It was announced that it would be 2 parts but the first trailer showed footage of both movies. Later they had trailers for each part. Here is the same. Dorot3and the gang will appear only in the 2 movie. But I suspect that the hat shot in the beginning of trailer and Glinda in the bubble shot is probably the the beginning of the first movie, while there's the overture. And then the flowers field with people running will be they singing "good news! She's dead!".

Okay, so Dr. Dillamond, here's what I'm hearing. Dillamond is a mix of puppet and practical effects, the puppeteer is named Louis/Louisa. But the voice will be added in later. Oh, and that it is possible that Dr. Dillamond is going to be female, and Indina will be voicing the role. Which, if they are adding the voice in later, that could easily be done in a secret recording session, away from others, which would mean they are possibly trying to keep this whole thing as a surprise. And I am here for it, if that is the case.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I slightly cringed at the defying gravity riff. Idk why but it just hit a weird nerve or smth with me and I really don't understand why. I could end up liking it in the movie but the way it sounded in the trailer was odd. 🤷‍♀️

My best friend and I watched this mid mental breakdown and had some thoughts. We watched it on Twitter so it looked like it was filmed on a potato. Seeing it here made it look so much more magical. I had no doubts in the visuals after the BEAUTY that was In The Heights. Galinda has been such an important character since I was 7 so I am very protective of her (my D&D character is named after her). I was getting more Penny Pingleton than Galinda but trailers are always misleading. This trailer didn't give me more hope but I am so excited that this amazing musical will be introduced to more people! This version doesn't erase anything before and I'm sure some people will like it more than the original! I may not be the biggest fan but I am always happy for theatre to get more exposure!

@leila5298 Both movies were filmed simultaneously. In this teaser, there are parts of both films. Glinda in her wedding dress is from her reprise of I'm Not That Girl. Dorothy and the Gang are from Part 2. The Flying Monkeys are from Part 2.

So I looked up the cast list Keara Settle from the greatest showman is playing a new character called Miss Coddle maybe she's replacing Dr Dillamond? OR oh my gosh just thought of this. Idina Menzel has been throwing crytpic hints that she's involved in the movie. What if she's playing Dr Dillamond and it's a surprise reveal for the movie. So they can put in an original song to potentially submit for the Oscars? Also John Chu confirmed Defying Gravity is the end of part 1.

I'm still not convinced by the decision to split it into two parts. Cynthia Erivo looks much better in costume than I expected, although I'm still not sure she will be convincing as a college student (I originally thought she would only appear in the second part with different casts for the younger and older versions of the characters).

I'm ok with them not looking college-age, but it bugs me that Cynthia and Ariana don't look to be in each other's age-range/peer group. I don't think Kristin and Idina looked like freshmen either, but they still looked like they were in each other's age range

@@Rosannasfriend They didn't look like that either, but film is a different medium so casting from a different age group is more noticable. That being said, I have seen both films and theatrical productions where noticably older performers were able to play younger characters convincingly, so I hope it works out well here too!
