I totally connected with Her on so many levels. Family issues, having to mature rapidly, not feeling loved but yearning to be accepted, struggling with never being enough, passionate but also scared of being vulnerable in any relationship, and creating strong boundaries as a means to protect herself. She’s such a bookworm because she loves to learn and make sense of a senseless world. Uninterested but able to make friends but once made, love them so much she’s willing to sacrifice their time together to spare their lives but save others as well. I think she’s so strong for accepting an alcoholic negligent mother as she was, a father who saw her as his personal sin, miss a family friend who had an ongoing family affair with her mother , and love a sister who is everything she can’t be - fragile, needy, frivolous, acquiescing, but above all cherished. I love her convictions in treating all beings (beasts in her case) with dignity and respect.

Love this series. Love this Oz. Cant watch the musical or movie due to Nessa Rose having arms...

I really enjoy both versions of the story, but I think I like the book characters a bit better just because it's all so deeply tragic. Book Elphaba's descent into madness is so very sad, Glinda's failure to rise above her snobbery robbing her of the deepest connection she ever made to another person, Fiyero's loneliness and awful fate, what happened to poor Tibbett, that scene where Elphaba talks to the Cow and what comes after, Dorothy being a hapless pawn in a cynical tyrant's political schemes, little Liir just wanting to be loved, the way Elphaba is repeatedly denied satisfaction, continually thwarted - she's even too late to be able to claim the honour of killing her intended murder victim once she's committed to the part! It's a deeply frustrating and unhappy book that doesn't even allow the reader the luxury of everything getting tidied up after the climax, it just... ends. I really admire it for its gutsiness, even if it was a very uncomfortable read at times.

L. Frank Baum always had the shoes silver. MGM changed them for the glorious technicolor. I don't know what I was expecting from this book but it's so much more of a political drama than I expected. That may just not really be my genre, although I like the psychological aspects. As you mention, it's hard to relate to her and that made it tougher for me to feel invested. I'm curious to see what Gregory did with the stepsisters though.

Hmm, why was she Green. ENVY dear girl, by the Mother , by the Wizard, drink the Elixir.

We know why Elphie is green. The Wizard gave inebriated Melena (the promiscuous wife of roving preacher & acting Governor of Munchkinland Frex) a vial of green liquid (Elphie would hold onto the bottle later as it was seen during the scene where Elphie & G[a]linda are in G[a]linda's suite sharing innermost secrets -- which subsequently leads into "Popular" in the musical -- until it was found in The Wizard's throne room, wherein in the original _Wonderful Wizard of Oz_ fairytale written by L. Frank Baum, its leftover contents was actually used as "liquid courage" given to The Cowardly Lion, rather than the bronze medal he receives in the 1939 MGM film) before basically committing statutory rape -- although if we're being truthfully honest, is it really that bad if Melena still would've had sex with The Wizard willingly anyway whether sober or not, yet the only reason The Wizard made sure she stayed intoxicated was for his own twisted sense of moral judgement more than anything else, proving both of them to be at fault, even if Melena doesn't remember her tryst with The Great & Powerful Humbug -- before departing via his hot air balloon for The Emerald City. Holier-than-thou, crippled Nessarose is not even Frex's daughter either! Indeed, even though Frex played favorites & preferred Nessa to Elphie, whom he wrongfully blamed for the loss of his wife & the physical disability of his favorite child (Duly remember, this is prior to him creating the famously iconic enchanted footwear [whether they be Silver Shoes, Ruby Slippers, or per the forthcoming pair of _Wicked_ films, an amalgamation of both, as the teaser trailer showed Dorothy, Toto & the three misfits -- The Scarecrow needing brains, The Tin Man desiring a heart & The Cowardly Lion lacking courage -- entering Oz's throne room & the dazzling shoes seen on Dorothy's feet are silver with ruby accents] as a final gift to Nessa before he died, after which Nessa formally took over ruling Munchkinland, eventually becoming the tyrannical Wicked Witch of the East, whom as we all know, gets flattened to death by Dorothy Gale's falling farmhouse carried to OZ via cyclone [the whirlwind was summoned out of thin air by Madame Morrible to lure Elphie out of hiding by threatening her sister, with unfortunately disastrous ramifications]), rather than Frex himself understandably realizing that he had coerced Melena to consume too many milk flowers -- which was stated as something that could prove fatal -- to prevent Nessa from turning out green, since he wasn't around to understand how Elphie became green, but was certainly present for Elphie's birth, only to completely shun her from the very beginning. In addition to the above discussion concerning Nessa, she was actually canonically born out of a threesome between the marrieds (Frex & Marlena) and their shared Quadling lover, Turtle Heart. As such, it's heavily implied -- if not outright confirmed -- that Nessa's actually the offspring of Turtle Heart & Melena, with Frex contributing basically nothing to either of the witch half-sister's existence, yet he still doted on Nessa hand & foot (pardon the wordplay, since Book! Nessa lacks arms & Musical! Nessa is confined to a wheelchair until she's gifted the iconic enchanted footwear in Act 2) and unfairly ostracized Elphie. By the time Frex & Melena have the witch half-sister's brother Shell (the only child genuinely conceived by Frex & Melena, who was completely normal), both Elphie & Nessa are gone to continue the rest of their lives, whilst Shell himself has no bearing whatsoever in the story following his birth, which was intended to give Frex & Melena a child they could truly call their own.

Elphaba Thropp is indefinitely not wicked!. She is a woman that wants to be loved and to love back, but she has to be emotionally stunted because of how her green hue is perceived. The book mainly explores the relationship between politics, racism, sexism, how the world works, and all the gray area that is associated with humanity!. Maguire shows that humans are messy and make complex choices, really getting into the moral and ethical aspects of said choices. Elphaba is forced to eradicate the goodness in her heart for people she cares about, but doesn’t give a crap about her. The book also hints At Elphaba being intersex or bisexual. She literally kisses Glinda and has an affair with Fiyero!. The adultery makes sense in a way because you don’t want to be having sexual relations with a fugitive of the government. Humans are sexual beings, therefore Elphaba has to have some way of fulfilling that purpose. The world is a complicated place and it is in no way perfect. The wizard is a reflection of Hitler and the notion of being brainwashed by someone who has their own interests at heart. The citizens of Oz are tricked into thinking the Wizard is so wonderful, but it is a mask (pun intended) to hide his weakness. They are unable to see past the bells and whistles of false promises of something they can’t resist. It is also reminiscent of the Trump era and how messed up a single leader can screw a nation. Ultimately, Wicked is more of a tragedy because nobody has the strength to see past skin color and the preconceived beliefs of our forefathers. Also the fact that a person can have all the right motivations and good intentions, but it is sadly not up to them how it is received. Elphaba just happened to get the short end of the stick and lived a lonely and unsatisfying life. She did her best to help the Animals, but society twisted her good intent and forced her to become what she did. Agree to disagree on certain things, I am just being honest and sharing my thoughts.

Nope! I just finished Wicked and I'm HIGHLY disappointed... The first half feels like a rip off of Hogwarts. And the political drama surrounding the animals feels like Narnia's bad dream. And I'm no prude, but the sexual scenes are too often and too vulgar. Really ruins the magic and mythology behind the Oz universe.... Don't understand how or why this author was allowed to ruin the MOST iconic witch in modern culture. So much could have been done with her amazing character, but a lot was left unclear (while sex scenes were TOO detailed). I did not like this book at all! And I don't see how this became a musical. 👎
