Securing your home
As the nights draw in and the clocks go back, it’s worth checking you’ve done everything you can to secure your home. Not only will this help protect you from burglaries but it may also reduce your home insurance premium. The key to securing your home is to understand the areas at risk and take measures to make them less attractive to intruders. The average burglar will spend up to 3 minutes trying to break in before giving up, so don’t make it easy for them! We’ve got loads of handy tips and advice to help you keep your home secure. So before you consider locks, security lighting, security alarms and any other home security items there a few simple steps you can take to help keep burglars at bay.
Wickes tips
Tip 1 - 60% of burglaries are opportunist so don’t leave anything of value like laptops, cameras and car keys in view. This will only encourage a burglar.
Tip 2 - 20% of burglaries happen without forced entry so as obvious as it sounds be extra vigilant and make sure you lock windows and doors when you leave the house.
Tip 3 - Burglars generally prefer empty properties so they will look for things like an empty drive or bins left out. If you are going away for an extended period of time, ask a trusted neighbour if they can check your property every few days, put the bins away and remove any visible unopened post. It’s also worth investing in some timer plugs to plug any lamps into - nothing says an empty house quite like no lights on in the evening.
Tip 4 - Don’t leave a spare set of keys under a flowerpot or doormat. It’s surprising how many people do and burglars are aware of this too.
Tip 5 - Don’t leave keys in or near your door at night as they could be reachable through the letterbox.
Tip 6 - If you’ve just bought yourself a new TV or computer don’t leave the packaging outside in view. Obviously this suggests that there i s an expensive item inside worth stealing.
Tip 7 - Make sure any sheds or outhouses are secure not only to protect their contents but burglars will often use tools found in sheds to gain access to properties.
Tip 8 - Think about securing the perimeter of your home, make sure that garden fences and access gates are secure and in good repair.
Tip 9 - Sometimes burglars will attempt to access your house whilst you’re there by posing as anything from a council employee to a meter reader. Do not let anyone you’re not expecting into your house until you have fully checked their identification.
