The Skaldic Bard

11 ай бұрын

Here’s a song I wrote and performed in Polish with Late Middle Polish orthography - there is very little distinction between Modern Polish and Late Middle Polish, so any Poles out there likely won’t hear the difference.
This time it’s about the glorious King Jan Sobieski and his famed Winged Hussars at the Battle of Vienna. The Holy Roman Empire was under siege at Vienna by the Ottoman Turks, who were close to taking the city until the warriors of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (among others) came to the rescue by storming down Kahlenberg mountain on horseback in their renowned winged armour, lances at the ready. The amazing quotes in the bridges and the Latin quote at the end are from King Jan Sobieski himself.
My wife is Polish, so this is in some way dedicated to the legacy of her ancestors and her people. I have spent quite some time living in Poland, learning the language and getting to know the wonderful folk there. As such, I wanted to show my appreciation to them and my respect for Poland in some way, and this seemed like a nice way to do it.
I hope you enjoy! Please do leave a comment (I love reading them!) and subscribe if you’d like to see more.

Lyrics:
Wielkie zło przybyło ze wschodu do Europy.
Iuż od dwóch miesięcy oblegáią Wiedeń!
Drodzy Polacy, nadszedł nász czas, ráz ná záwsze.
Zá królem maszerujemy ná woynę.
“Poświęcę y ofiáruję ojczyźnie
moie ćiáło y żyćie, mienie y krew.
Ia prágnę się całkowicie oddać
ná obronę całego chrześćijaństwa”.
Bóg iest nászą śiłą y pomocą w walce z wrogiem.
Honor iest przyśięgą, wálczymy do samego końcá.
Ojczyzna iest nászą dumą, do walki lećimy!
Żeby Europa była wolna, my umieramy!
Związáni układem i honorem, my z Krakowa
wyruszamy zá królem Sobieskim.
Wiedeńczycy morzą się głodem w mieście,
zostáią uwięzieni przez Osmanów.
Turcy proponuią hániebny pokój.
Nász król z wśćiekłymi oczami przemawia:
“Ieśli ieszcze ráz następny poseł da
táki warunek, káżę go powieśić.”
Bóg iest nászą śiłą y pomocą w walce z wrogiem.
Honor iest przyśięgą, wálczymy do samego końcá.
Ojczyzna iest nászą dumą, do walki lećimy!
Żeby Europa była wolna, my umieramy!
Krwawe pole bitwy stáie się widoczne.
Piechota ráduje się z nászego przybycia!
Przygotowując się do nátárćia,
odmawiamy modlitwę ná wzgórzu.
“Jesteśmy wprawdzie w obcym krayu, lecz
nie walczymy teraz dla obcej spráwy.
Walczymy zá nász kray i zá chrześćijaństwo,
nie dla cesarza, lecz dla Pana Boga.”
Bóg iest nászą śiłą y pomocą w walce z wrogiem.
Honor iest przyśięgą, wálczymy do samego końcá.
Ojczyzna iest nászą dumą, do walki lećimy!
Żeby Europa była wolna, my umieramy!
Ná grzbiećie konia, násze skrzydła prowádzą
nas do walki z obcym nieprzyiaćielem.
Z przodu iest wielki nász Król Jan Sobieski.
Z kopiami w dłoni iedziemy do boiu!
Osiemnaście tysięcy Polaków,
szturmujemy w dół do złych najeźdźców.
Przebijamy się przez ich obronę.
Bójcie się nas, bo jedziemy w Bożej łasce!
Bóg iest nászą śiłą y pomocą w walce z wrogiem.
Honor iest przyśięgą, wálczymy do samego końcá.
Ojczyzna iest nászą dumą, do walki lećimy!
Żeby Europa była wolna, my umieramy!
Pod krzyżem dla Páná Iezusa Chrystusa
walczyliśmy, krwáwiliśmy y wygraliśmy.
Chwałá Królowi Janowi Sobieskiemu!

As a Pole I expected middle polish and modern polish to be like middle english and modern english (Barely recognizable) but I understand everything, just like you said. Great work, although the rhythm of how you speak is somewhat off but I understand its for the song since polish words can be quite lengthy, still love it. God bless

Thanks a lot! Yeah, it's a bit difficult to get a melody that harmonises perfectly with Polish intonation, but Middle Polish also has those slightly elongated vowels on random letters at times which makes the penultimate-syllable stress a little more difficult too. But thanks!

English’s development is not wholly original, it is a pidgin that resulted from a stalemate for dominance between Olde Anglish and Norman French that then struggled for 450 years to find a grammatical equilibrium and commonly applicable rules. It was making progress, when the printing press came along and slowed that progress WAY down, and has been effectively frozen since sound recordings became common place.

@@TheVerinen2 Well, first of all it's late 17th Century Polish, and second of all, every single word in the song has been cross referenced with dated text corpora from the time of the Battle of Vienna, so what exactly are you basing that assertion on? Polish is a language that has resisted outside influence remarkably well

They were murderers, killed without mercy. From the frankish attack on the frisians, from the saxon wars to the crusades in outremere or balticum, the christians came to murder, rape, pillage and burn. The Nero should have crucified them all, when he had the chance. Would have given the world much peace.

It's good to see someone honouring their personal connections to different languages/cultures. So many people forget the history all we Europeans share and act as if their own present-time country was the only one of note ever... Whereas in reality, there is so much that shaped us into who we are today and so many things our past has seen that many people are ignorant of. As if all those people were nothing but tales and dead dust - but we should understand them, honour them, remember them. Who are we without those who came before us? Thank you for reminding us with your wonderful music. God bless you and your wife.

Even looking at some polish books from late XVIII century we can see how much orthography has changed. I find it very amusing to try to read these books. The words don't look anyhow familiar, but after you try to read and articulate some way, then they sound familiar. I'm curious how do the language researchers determine the sound of some language from few centuries ago. I suppose there is an element of interlanguage comparison. In older polish orthography there are accents above letters, so I think that means accents similar to what is used in spanish. We can also see thay 'y' is used im places where we'd use 'i' nowadays. But how can we know what was the exact sound of this 'y'? Anyway, nice that you did this song :)

So far it seems that only ortography and singular word in this entire song are different, but ortography is close enough to fully understand it anyways.

The Turk commander was defeated by his own greed. He basically had the city outright, save for a final step of actually invading, but he kept trying to get them to surrender, and not out of any kind of mercy. If he succeeded, he’d have basically become, de facto, sovereign lord over the city, in control of its wealth generating systems since the infrastructure would be intact. Direct invasion without surrender, means no quarter, the loot would be evenly divided amongst the troops, and the city would effectively become a worthless burned out hole in the ground full of charred bones, and lots of exotic sex slaves taken back to Turkey. But he wanted the former, not the latter, with Vienna, so he kept trying and trying to persuade them to finally surrender, a hubris which accidentally bought Sobieski precious time to snatch victory away from the Turks.
