Today's topic is The Little King, an Otto Soglow comic strip character. I dig into the full history of the character from the 1930s to 1975 and it's huge impact on pop culture of that era.
Then, I travel to Hamilton Square, NJ to final location of the Little King Sandwich Shop. This once ubiquitous chain stretched from NJ to Los Angeles but now has dwindled down to one. I take a look at the beautiful murals in the restaurant and trace the growth and demise of the chain!

I had a big stack of 1970s King Features comic books when I was a kid (Popeye, Beetle Bailey, and probably other titles) that included Little King strips. Never knew about the sub shops and had COMPLETELY forgotten about the character until seeing this video's thumbnail.

I have wondered about this place from time to time. This was the first sub shop I remember as a child growing up late 80's/ early 90's in Omaha, Nebraska. The tuna was so good. Thanks for the vid.

Little King is just as good today and I remember it from the 1970s. We brought a bunch of sandwiches over to mom’s and dad’s recently! So great!

This sort of reminds me of Bemelmans bar at the Carlyle hotel in New York. With Ludwig Bemelmans murals, who created Madeline. Only Little King looks like it's much more relaxing and the food looks great!

I lived a few blocks from the Little King hoagie shop in the video. My family got hoagies there every so often. I loved their seeded Italian bread! Crusty outside, soft inside. However, somewhere during my high school years they changed owners and the sandwiches weren't as good. Not that they are bad, but just not as good as they were. If you want a HUGE hoagie on awesome seeded Italian and you live in that general area, go to Hogback Deli. Their Jumbo halves can feed 2 people... Or 1 person for 2 meals lol

The Galesburg, Illinois location was great place to eat. Unfortunately, it closed a number of years ago.

Yeah, I really should’ve. I wish I had showed the guy making it as well. I didn’t even get to eat the sandwich, my son ate the whole thing. 😂
