Honestly, this is a good discussion, but I think excluding Resort from comparison was an odd choice on your end. Swordplay Duel, for example, was more kinetic and overall was faster, while Chambara is slower and more focused on swipes. I prefer Resort's approach, but I do know that there are some who prefer SS's approach.

Something I've always loved about Wii Sports is how "open" it is. I don't exactly know why, but when I would play Wii Sports as a kid the in-game world felt limitless, like I could walk around and engage with the environment. Switch Sports on the other hand, feels pretty limited. Like I can only see what the game specifically wants me to see.

I think that another point to consider is that Wii Sports felt a little more interactive and reactive to your movements. It let you goof around with the baseball bat, the golf club, the tennis racket, the bowling ball or even the boxing gloves without actually playing. Just as an example, I liked hitting the ground with the bat a couple of times before my friend threw the ball. It was useless, but also fun. In comparison, a lot of the minigames in Switch Sports make a certain action equal a single move in the game. Charamba feels the most responsive to your actions, close to the Resort swordplay, but the rest feel a lot more robotic, especially volleyball. It's like they programmed an emulator and switched the A and B buttons with a couple moves on the controller. This doesn't mean they aren't fun, but it makes them feel more like Mario Party minigames than Wii Sports minigames, if that makes sense. So for me, Switch Sports kind of feels like a very limited Mario Party with only six games to play. They are fun, but I get bored much faster than I do when I play the original Wii Sports.

They could just re-release wii sports resort for $40 on the switch and it would probably be more successful than this

I've never really played wii sports that much, however I played the hell out of wii sports resort, and I think resort beats switch sports by FAR, it had way more sports, each sport having multiple modes and they were all at least as fun as switch sports'

I think another important factor is that Wii Sports was a launch title for the Wii. Meanwhile, Switch Sports released a full 5 years after the switch. People liked Wii Sports because it was their introduction to the possibilities of the Wii, but with Switch Sports, there are so many other Switch games you could be playing that are way more exciting. Maybe it would have had more of an impact if it released as a launch title, because it's definitely a lot more in depth than 12 Switch that we got.

I would say I didn't buy this game just because of the games included in it. Wii sports resort has twice the games and many of them feel original. In nintendo switch sports half of the sports are already in resort and the other half don't seem that unique either. As badminton looks very similar to tennis, soccer is just rocket league it seems, and volleyball I've seen from mario sports mix already. It also seems as if this game just has less replay value for two main reasons. First, there's just less variety in the games. And second, the actions in the game have less room for personal or funny moments. Like in wii sports where you could roll the ball backwards or in wii sports resort table tennis where you had a full freedom in your movements and could truly hit some weird shots. I'm sure this isn't a bad game but it doesn't seem to get close to the appeal and charm of the first game and resort. Even if I am looking at it through my nostalgia goggles.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact that the online kinda sucks. First off, you can't just play with friends. While not too bad on paper, more often than not most people will just want a calm game of bowling or golf with friends. Secondly, while in those online games, you can't spectate who you want meaning that while you can get into a game with your friends you won't be able to watch them once you're done. That leads into the third thing, instead of the old turn based bowling everyone throws at once. Now, I am aware most of this applies to only bowling but it's still an issue. The last thing I need to say is that my experience with the game is fairly limited, so there may be ways around all this that I'm unaware of, or it could have been changed.

i think not mentioning Wii Sports resort is a big critical flaw of this video (as other people have pointed out), but especially because, wii sports resort showed a sports game that nintendo was capable of making back in the *if* it was gonna be a premium title. and it's honestly... really sad that the the new 60 dollar sports game has just barely more content than the free minigame pack that was bundled with every Wii and people can't even agree on if the minigames in the 60 dollar video game are better than the ones that came out over a decade ago.

You completely missed the point, it has nothing to do with expectations on its own or the time of its release, it is all about the value here. Why would you buy a 40€ game with 6 simple minigames when the original Wii Sports is on par and was packaged for free. This game needed to atleast be on par with Resort with its content but Nintendo decided to ruin all of their Switch sport games with a "Games as a service" philosophy, releasing them bare bones and slowly patching content back in that you would have expected (Switch Sports, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing).

Sports Champions (PS3) and Kinect Sports (Xbox360) both had beach volleyball which played much the same as Switch Sports volleyball in 2010, which really doesn't help it's "freshness".

Another thing with the time aspect is how Resort changed things. Wii sports doesn’t present itself as anything more than it is, a minigame collection. You have a menu, you select a game, you get taken to a place to play the game. Even the people in the background are only there in the context of the sport, they don’t pretend that the sports exist in a wider context. This is contrasted by switch sports where they seem to present a whole lived in world with people hanging out and existing in the background independent of the sport. None of this can be interacted with or even seen from a different angle. This is contrasted by resort where they did put the games in the context of a lived in place, Wahu island. The difference is through things like island flyover and some modes in wii fit plus you do get to view this whole to which the games belong on your own terms. Switch sports presents there being much more than sports mini games in it, but there isn’t, Wii sports doesn’t present itself as anything other than what it is.

I’ll go ahead and say right now that Nintendo Switch Sports is bad. Wii Sports is awesome on the other hand, even taking the world by storm.

I feel like you missed the point here. Switch Sports is an undercooked concept with some very poor implementation. While sports like Tennis/badminton/chambara feel better due to the fact that you need to perform the full motion, it ruins one of the other reasons why Wii Sports did so well in the first place. Wii Sports (and its sequel Resort) was more accessible due to the fact that anyone can pick up and play it. Wii Sports was far more fleshed out because each of the five sports came with three additional minigames that if you played you would actively get better at each and every sport. Wii Sports was a tech demo that had a game built around it, but Switch Sports is like 1-2-Switch, a really impressive tech demo, and nothing more... That and my personal theroy that Switch Sports was a game built just to sell Nintendo Switch Online accounts...

I love the aesthethic of switch sports and of its characters, but like seeing that initial cosmetic selection, the thought of having to unlock what I want by playing online (I don't want to pay for online...), and also no golf and looks like less stuff than Wii Sports Resort (which I looooved) now really makes me not want to get that game anymore. I was really hyped for it and now I'm sad :(

The Boxing v. Chambara segment should have used swordfighting from Resort, sinc that's what chambara was inspired by.

You gotta keep in mind they did Wii Sports twice before releasing that (with Wii Sports Club), so they basically gave us the same game for the third time with some modifications. Whenever I play switch sports I usually end up just wanting to boot up the Wii instead.

I think Wii Sports is better for the primary reason of motion controls. Wii Sports is a little insensitive, while Nintendo Switch Sports is TOO sensitive. Unless you are really good at keeping your hand still, or moving the controller in a nearly perfect line, then Switch Sports is going to screw you over. The thing about Wii Sports is it has the Nintendo charm, while Nintendo Switch Sports just feels like a cheap cash grab trying to get people to buy the game because it's a new "Wii Sports game".

Another point against Nintendo Switch Sports is that I have fully grown man hands and the Joy Cons are built for no one over the age of 9. If they would release a Wii Remote(and Nunchuck in the same package because they shouldn't be sold separate) for the Switch I'd feel a lot more comfortable being able to bring my Switch to play Mario Kart or Mario Party with my friends.

i feel base wii sports also had the advantage of releasing WITH the wii. so it also had the advantage of serving as a good wii tutorial. meanwhile switch sports released far after the switch release and the switch itself also isnt as motion control heavy as the wii was so it just falls flat for me.

I think the Wii remote is better as it's weight and size matches what you handle (Tennis racket, baseball, Golf club) which makes it more immersive. Wii sports also had big crowds watching you and it hypes the games up a lot, its the reason why I love baseball in Wii sports (also that my Mii's are the ones playing) All in all, Wii Sports has better scale and immersion.

Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort was actually a dangerously good combo. Chambara on the switch fails compared to the Chambara on Wii Sports Resort and everything feels very souless. And everyone loves the music of Wii sports too, music tends to make or break a game.

i know there obv is a lot of incongruency in matching them up but comparing baseball vs volleyball seems like an exercise in futility tbh - baseball is all about timing and solo play - volleyball does have the timing element but its waaay slower/more methodical at times but then requires quick reflexes like to block/return a spike/return a block etc - also the biggest diff is that vball is a team sport so you HAVE to get support from ur teammate to succceed, for ex: the only way to get an unblockable 'purple' spike is to do a perfect 'green' bump yourself, then get a perfect 'yellow' set from your teammate (who has to get this or you can only get a yellow spike at best) - the reliance/impact of your partners ability is more cut and dry to see in vball vs any other game i can imagine in wii/switch sports

Something that is often overlooked with experiencing/creating an artpiece is the circumstance that the artpiece is created in. An artpiece in of itself is a timecapsule of the events that ended up making it what it is. Without those events, said artpiece wouldn't be what it is now. What's more, people will often only look at an artpiece from their now perspective, as opposed to when it first happened. For an artpiece will be a timeless forming of dated events, but the now will be judged in the now.

i feel like the first real update/patch will make some simple but really important changes, hopefully my 'Big 3': 1.) If someone quits a match/drops it YOU should still get the win even if they dont get a loss and if one person drops out of a sports like volleyball or soccer then AI bots should fill in 2.) Idk why they changed the bowling thing re:timing when you let go and how that effects the spin, the spin and everything else feels better in SwitchSports bowling imo but the addition of the old timing release could add a huge additional layer 3.) Allow trades of cosmetic items cuz for ex: in my case, certain stuff like facial hair/long hair thats not feminine have been non existent in my prize-options while not in others and its driving me nuttttts

It’s not really fair to even compare the sports. Wii sports released in 2006 when all this motion stuff was brand new and a whole trend. Sure Switch sports may have improved it in 2022 but lacks the charm that the game released in 2006 has. So yes, Switch sports in nearly all regards is better than the Wii counter part released over a decade ago, but lacks the same charm and feels more corporate. (Switch sports also released unfinished so take that as you will)

with the whole mii issue, people are failing to realize that Switch Sports is *NOT* the sequel to Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort, they are meant to be 2 separate things, it really isn't fair to complain that Miis are discouraged in a game where they could very well exist in a separate universe

I personally like Switch Sports even if I recognize it has issues. Likely this is because I honestly haven't played Wii Sports or Resort in many, many years and I didn't personally think they were anything that special back then. Fun sure and memorable for the gimmick but nothing more than that. I think the people who overly focus on the Sportsmates being the major issue with this game are silly. I think they are better than Miis especially once you unlock stuff; which having to do so I agree is a flaw but I also get why Nintendo did it. The major issues with this game are mostly that there aren't enough sports to play and the way of unlocking content sucks. It shouldn't be locked behind online only play and having it be timed/rotating is very annoying. There are other minor issues as well but I think those are the major ones.

Not too sure, strangley enough i've been playing wii sports a lot again lately and I can't imagine bowling without needing to release a button to drop, or Tennis without the ability to rotate the racket. The chimbara game DEFINATELY has my attention, but its a shame they're holding off on golf when it's the game that's been most of our playtime in wii sports. Was hyped for this game seeing how it oddly matched my revisiting of wii sports but now im uncertain; maybe once golf get's released i'lll look into it more.

Ill never understand why the elimination bowling is set up the way it is, dividing it into sections means nothing if you dont reset after each one - they should 100% have it so each 3round set is its own thing and so if you have a bad round but advance ur not playing konwing you'll never win, since everyone's score resets after each round and you just keep dropping those with the worst scores -they MUSTVE considered this and i cant beleive beta testing didnt tell them to go this way with it

I think a key point you missed is the general aesthetics. So, having only seen videos and streams of Switch Sports, I can't judge it myself too much, but I do know Wii Sports very well. Yes, the actual definition of textures is lower, but a high quality photo of a turd is still just a turd. Sometimes a higher definition only reveals a higher number of flaws. Instead, focus on how Wii Sports used its 'camera' and looks. In tennis, the camera shows the entire court before sweeping down, while golf gives you a fairly good look at the course. If you want a direct comparison, look at 12:12 to 12:30. The Wii Tennis has the camera float around the player and the ball, it dips a bit as it changes direction. It looks like what your vision looks like, following the ball, but also keeping the player in view. Its not a perfect view. Switch Sports has the camera firmly locked to the player. It will always be a certain distance from them, and the camera follows them like its on an automated turret. It's not a friendly camera, and it doesn't pretend to be. I don't think this holds true for all the Switch Sport camera angles, and the opposite can be try, like the batter camera in Baseball being static while the netball one does seem to be floaty, but its all a similar stance. Other aesthetical reasons are stuff like the menu, the music tracks, how the Miis rarely have arms or legs, and instead bob around the place. I don't think I've ever seen a game copy the Wii Sport menu style, as even Wii Sport Resort came back with its own unique style. On the surface, its just a list of 5 games, but each one has its own sublayers, and the entire time music is playing to get you pumped up. The main thing with Wii Sports is that it's friendly, in every way. The gameplay is easy to understand for anyone, but its also welcoming every time you boot it up. It's style also makes it quite timeless. Switch Sports seems more focused at skilled players, it's aesthetic style feels like it takes itself too seriously, and will critique you if you aren't good enough. I'm willing to bet in another decade or so, Switch Sports will look quite dated, but Wii Sports made its own style, that can exist whenever you need it.

I feel like some sports have better comparisons with Wii Sports Resort, like Chambara is literally just Swordplay, and your description of Badminton gives me Table Tennis vibes. I think your comparison with Baseball and Volleyball was very confusing too. Tennis would be a good comparison here too. (Also, 3 games where you hit a thing over the net? That's half of all the sports! Come on...) Also, Football really doesn't compare to anything in either games. The closest I can think of is Basketball Pick-up game. And as you mentioned, it isn't really a "Wii" game. "Wii" games are games that couldn't be done without motion controls. Imagine Bowling or Golf without the motion controls. Imagine how lame Table Tennis or Swordplay would've been. I think Sports Resort is more comparable to NSS. Wii Sports is a launch title, and a freebie with the Wii, while Resort is something you actually have to buy. I'd compare Wii Sports to 1, 2, Switch personally. Plus, it seems like Spocco Square is trying to be like Wuhu Island, though it doesn't even come close. I think the main thing is that, to me, there's almost no reason to get NSS over Wii Sports Resort.

Wii Sports Club is what Nintendo Switch Sports should have been, but like a sequel to the wii u game like a Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. I haven't played too much of Club, but from what I played it is a an HD remake with online. Switch Sports could just been an even better version of that remake with more sports and other modes.

Wii sports came bundled with the wii and blew our minds away while being fun Wii sports resort was an amazing follow up that only costed 20 dollars Nintendo switch sports is only fun for about 20 minutes before it becomes a nearly mindless grind fest; and the game still costs 40 dollars I think it's a shame Nintendo thought to even release a shameless cash grab like this, capitalizing on fan's nostalgia. I mean, with even the sport amount wii sports resort is half the price and has twice the amount. Price tags aside, Nintendo switch sports just has less. Less customisation, less charm, less parties cracking up with friends, less fun.

If you're gonna do a comparison and rating between the sports in two different games, at least make sure you've played enough of both of them to actually have some input on them. I think another issue is a sort of political one. In this current climate not many people can afford new consoles/games like a Switch and Switch Sports, and, maybe it is just cause i am a single adult who mostly talks to single/childless adults, but i feel like more adults own Switches, and yes some adults are into these games but i feel like theu get more fraw from family groups. So you're missing out on more people and the target audience, so that means less players and less reviews, you're also just getting more critical reviews as opposed to families just saying their kids love it. Wii Sports was like a maiden title with the Wii, itcame with it for many and the two went hand in hand, the Switch hasn't had that with this. You also did touch on my other point at the end too, the Wii version was new, exciting, for many of us ot was a new way to play games, it was at a time when i feel it could get more spread and had more people interested, there was this huge hype excitement surrounding it. For this Switch one, we've had these types of things for years now, it inherently is not as exciting. If circumstances were more mutual, it would be interesting to see if there would be any change?

Tl;dr: do not buy this f*cking game! Sorry for the profanity. As a wii sports tennis fan, I can proudly say that wii tennis is better. Get the right flick of the wrist and you have a power serve, nothing else needs knowing (like the wobbly ball), plus you can literally play against yourself. As a whole however, switch sports doesn't have a stats thing showing your improvement (in areas like strength and speed for instance), it only has 3 difficulty levels where wii sports was based off your pro level (the game automatically gets harder the better you get, or easier if you've lost your touch), AND switch sports doesn't have any extra fun game modes you like to call "practice modes" (i loved every tennis mode and everyone loved knocking down 100 pins). Couple that with a necessity for switch online to unlock anything is bonkers... well it would be fine if as you said there were more hairstyles. Literally wii sports had more content for, hold on let me run the numbers, FUCKING FREE. Oh I can complain even more. Remember the joycon drift? Yeah well that has a tendency to deplete battery power. Why is that a problem? Well it would be fine if it was just the drift, get some isopropyl alcohol and clean the underneath of the thumbstick, or blow into it like an old cartridge... but for some godforfuckingsaken reason I NEED both joycons the second I hit the first menu... I only need to use one joycon to select literally anything, but for some stupid fucking reason the other joycon needs to be on for me to use the other one... WHY? If what I'm saying doesn't make sense, take all your joycons except 1 (preferably the right one for that sweet home button action) and chuck em out the window, see how far you get into this game. And yet, if you go outside, grab a left joycon, come back in, turn in on, and leave it in a completely separate room (idk bathroom I guess), THEN you can use the right joycon to select things and play things... AND PLAY THINGS, YOU STILL NEED THE OTHER JOYCON ON JUST TO PLAY ANYTHING! IN SHORT-- ahem, sorry... in short, fuck this game. As you may have noticed, I don't care about the new mii look, or even the "free update" strategy, and this game still sucks ass. Every time I play it, as "finely tuned" and "polished" every game is, I just feel anger, wishing I was playing wii sports instead. And this is just wii sports we're comparing it to, not resort or club... compare it to those (at least resort, I didn't play either) and this is a MASSIVE downgrade.

Wii Sports: First ever game Wii Sports Resort: Most played and Most memorable for me Wii Sports Club: On my favorite console the Wii U Nintendo Switch Sports: Disappointed, I can understand why other people say a game from their brought and done horribly is heart breaking.
