I used the following kit in testing these speakers :
SMSL H0200 Headphone Amp, Burson Funk Amp / Headphone Amp with Cambridge Audio Minx MIN22 Speakers, Adam Audio SP-5 Headphones. (I also tested in a premium but perhaps mismatched system, price wise, comprising Hegel H390 amplifier with KEF LS50 Meta Speakers).
As an addendum, the top buttons control volume and an ability to play and pause, which is probably obvious from the video and pictures.

Cool, it was indeed what I was also looking for in my kitchen setup, since the Chromecast Audio disappeared. And indeed, the used market is ridiculous! And of course, the video looks great again!

@@nocnymarek7645 I use CC Audio on optical output to A-S501 amp. Mainly, if not only for Tidal HiFi. Still haven't found reliable report proving that Wiim's Mini user experience (Apps UI/stability, WiFi signal reception, etc) or audio quality excel Chromecast Audio with Tidal app.

Great summary, Simon! I was waiting, since you the The Cheap Audio man you were going to do this! I am still looking for a good Roon endpoint that either has a decent DAC, or digital outs. I guess I could save up for a Bluesound, but wondered if something like this could get me there.

I know it would be easy for "audiophiles" like you to ignore any device this inexpensive but thank you for reviewing it. Many of us might want to use something like the Bluesound Node for "real" listening on our "hi fi" systems but want to be able to stream to other rooms too with lesser set ups. This device seems like a perfect match. I bought one. Looking forward to it and to the hoped for firmware update to make it play bit-perfect. Hopefully that will increase the sound quality over the resampling to 16-bit/48kHz. Thanks again!

I think the definition of audiophile is in some way bullshit and alienating and your post admirably and smartly makes that point. We should all call ourselves audio lovers, or just music lovers. All this stuff is a means to an end anyway.

Well, I went out to buy one (a Pro for the Chromecast). This always stuck in my mind after this video. Thanks! I use it in my main system connected via coax to my dCS DAC. It sounds pretty good. But now I can finally stream Mixcloud and Digitally Imported. Fantastic!

Thanks Simon for this review. i have been thinking about streaming and adding that capability to my modest living room system. I already have an adequate DAC in my Denon 2808, pushing plenty of power through the Krix Phoenix floor standers. So expensive streamers that include DAC/amplification seem redundant for me. I have upgraded my PC sound in the study with an IFI Zen Dac, together some decent cables and power supply and the sound improvement has been remarkable through the Bose Companion 20's or the Sennheiser HD 58X headphones. I have spent plenty of time looking at the reviews (including yours) of the IFI streamer, and sadly the set up/app seems weak, and it seems that hardware development got ahead of the software. The WiiM Mini streamer seems to be the converse. The app's setup and ease of use, using the bare minimum of hardware to deliver CD quality sound, is very appealing at this price point.

The models sold after October 2022 have the power adapter in the box. There are also many improvements to the units capability.

I have lately tried Argon Solo, Audiolab 6000 and Ifi Zen stream. But i settled with Wiim because it sounds good enough for me (optical to Denon pma-1600ne) and it’s most stable of them with wifi(!) Those mentioned above costs a lot more, but doesn’t sound a lot better. My critical listening is with CD etc anyway

Thank you. Unsurprisingly it’s not a match both dac wise and digital out as a transport, so I deliberately didn’t mention the Node as it’s not in the same price / performance bracket. I’m using one of these with some inexpensive pc speakers. 😀

Been using the WiiM Mini for the last few weeks. I also have the Chromecast Audio. But the WiiM is way better. Am waiting for the low noise Allo Shanti Power supply to be delivered. Am hoping that will improve the sound even further. And I forgot to mention - the 10 band Equaliser is superb too.

Great video, Simon! Very informativ one. Sorry for my silly question but can I stream music with this little streamer without any Dac and Amp on my headphone? I have the new Ipad Air 2022 and a 150 ohm Sennheiser HD 58X headphone. Do you recommned buying a DAC/AMP to listen to HiRes music with Wiim? I am a newcomer to HIFI. First I wanted to use a streaming service like Apple music but streaming music with this little gadget would be cheaper for the long run without monthly payments to Apple music. I want to be a cheap streaming guy. Thank you so much for your advice in advance.

Thanks, Prob best going straight from iPad to start with. You might be better off going with a dongle dac to bolster headphone performance as steaming all inbuilt into the iPad. Check out my vids I’ve done on dongle DACs , Hidizs and Audioquest are very good.

Just ordered Wiim pro, looking to pair it with Chord Qutest and power them both with the same usb powerbank :). I kinda do want an hdmi earc on the streamer I would have gone for bluesound node as it does have hdmi earc but it does not support upnp so it's not an option. I'm looking to avoid the tv's optical out as that requires me to fiddle with settings on my lg tv everytime I use it.

Couple things to keep in mind that I have learned with mine. 1) if you plan to use this to stream music via your turn table, it must have either a built in pre-amp, or you will need to purchase one to give "line level" going into the WiiM . 2) it is advertised that it will stream Pandora. Only if you use Alaxa Voice Control. No where in the WiiM Home app. Android, under music services, is there a choice to do this.

Thank God, finally someone to warn unsuspecting buyers about the limitations of this type of device and services. Does it streams KZfaq Music with the phone/tablet turned off? (I mean, in sleep mode or 'miles' away)

@@cleantheocean I have to make a retraction. There is now the ability to stream Pandora in the WiiM Home app. As far as KZfaq music, this was taken from a review, "you must use AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth if you want to reproduce it in the Wiim Mini." I personally don't use KZfaq Music. I am not sure I understand your question, WiiM Home software is made to either stream on your home network via wifi or Bluetooth.

@@cleantheocean if you want to stream music from your 1. Turntable 2. CD player to multiple locations in your house. You want to stream a service like Spotify, Pandora, etc. To multiple locations same time, or any location. Example, I stream my turntable or CD player from my office to my family room or deck.

One last question: when you stream from services like Pandora you turn the mobile phone or tablet on, choose a song or playlist with the app and then the phone/tablet turns off but the music keeps playing? I have dozens of playlists on youtube music and want to keep them...

Simon. As Spotify HiFi seems to be just talk, I recently re-subbed to Qobuz. I would like a solution, similar to Spotify Connect, to use with Qobuz. I have a Bluesound Node 2i, but am not a fan of the UI. What solution would you suggest that will be bit perfect into my integrated amp (Hegel h390) and where I can use the native Qobuz app on my phone (Pixel 6 Pro) to control the stream? Thanks

Simon , thanks for great review.. I already have a wiim mini and replace my chromecast audio. I'm considering buy a mojo2 for portable dac. Even though mojo2 is for portable, I also want to use mojo2 as a external dac for wiim mini in my hifi speaker system. You also reviewed mojo2 ... here is my question..... Can I control the volume with wiim mini app when mojo2 is connected with wiim mini(optical) ?? .. My amp & mojo2 have no remote control ... if it is possible, It can be a good system for network play...

hello, I would be very grateful to you for your advice. I have a good external DAC in my system and I am looking for a device that will be a good streamer for Spotify and tidal. When using the digital output for an external Dac, will there be a difference in sound quality between the wiim mini and the Bluesound Node 2i? I have pretty high end system but dont want to spend that amount of many on Bluesound… because its only a streamer… not a computer or tv :) Now im using Apple TV gen 3 for audio streaming and i want upgrade that :)

Yes, that is the most interesting question here. I imagine that the latest firmware update enabling bit-perfect stream from the optical out will mean that the end result will be indistinguishable from a more expensive unit like the blueound, as long as it's going into a high quality DAC. I've ordered one today so i'm going to find out!

Simon I have very high end hifi with klipsch la scala speaker, 211 power amp, croft preamp and beresford modified dac. i was thinking of buying this streamer to work with spotify, as i noticed it has optical out which i can link to the beresford dac. would you recommend this for my system? where did you buy the mini from? i am also based in the UK (London)

It might be an improver, but it doesn't even support the Chromecast protocol! So, no streaming of KZfaq/YTMusic and lots of streaming things that simply could be cast to your DAC otherwise. This is why I believe that there is currently no better mini streamer than the Chromecast with Google TV. You can connect any USB DAC to it, and it puts out 96kHz at 24bit. And you get a remote with it

Hi David, You can stream via airplay 2 in the KZfaq app. Whether limited to 16/48 is really academic to my mind because it’s hard enough to hear differences of higher sample rates on much more premium gear, let alone a budget device like this (which isn’t a criticism of it, just everything is made at a price point). Too many people get hooked into the ‘higher sample rate’ means better as us reviewers often don’t think that way. Also as I pointed out I think lots of the linked connect services make chromecasting redundant and certainly when the update happens for the toslink connection on this wiim, which is good enough for many if you have a toslink connection, as most HiFi DACs do. So I read when using Amazon Music it streams from your device and not directly as with the 'Connect' function but if it's Alexa/Siri voice enabled which I presume is why it has a mic then if I ask Alexa to play a song from Amazon will it be pulling directly from Amazon Music and with HD/UltraHD quality ?

As far as I’m aware - and is most common with voice control based on experiences to date - the Amazon Alexa / Siri feature is controlled by compatible Amazon and Siri devices eg Amazon echo dot (3rd and 4th) generation and you set up voice activation in the Alexa App. The mic here is for syncing, and no direct voice facilitation, so you’ll need an echo dot which are cheap too.

It is sad that I cannot find anything like chromecast audio right now. I really want to add a subwoofer in my nest audio pair and the only way that I can think of that will work is using a chromecast audio plugged in to a sub and make a speaker group with my nest audio pair.

Generally never choose a dac based on the dac chip inside because they are only one part of the dac chain. I think it is a type of burr brown though

My older generation echo dot (last but one) has a 3.5mm analogue output only. No digital output so you can’t use it with another dac in your hifi, pre amp, integrated etc. I think that’s the same with the latest version plus other differences ….loads of information online. 😀👍

My chromecasts do gapless fine. Without Chromecast protocol it's not much use to me, no KZfaq music for old classical performances.

I’ve never really used KZfaq music, but KZfaq does allow airplay normally so you should be ok 😀

It looks good but what about the security aspect? This device scans all your wifi and your network and as you give it access it will send all this information plus all the traffic going through your wifi to the manufacturer who will do what he wants with your private data. You should have mentioned this and told us that you have to configure this on an IOT network in an isolated vlan with firewall rules in all in and drop out.

I don’t see that as a disadvantage. Use of private info by software etc is rife now anyway. As long as used for purpose needed and secure which is what the rules under data protection in Europe pertain. I’ve never had security probs with it. Cheers

Putting the protective cover of your Mac underneath it is a very bad idea. It prevents a good ventilation and cooling flow !

You are prob right , am just protecting case underside. Fan only comes on in heavy use and hardly ever tbh

All digital outputs sound exactly the same. If using the (digital) optical out on Wiim and Chromecast, they will sound exactly the same if using the same DAC. Only the DAC matters. It converts the 0s and 1s into the actual analog audio you hear.
