This video was recorded by Musuweu Theron Kolokwe in Windhoek, Namibia, where Winnie lives and works. Lozi is spoken by as many as 750,000 people throughout southern Africa, in particular Zambia, where it is recognized as a minority language, as well as Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa. It emerged from the convergence of two languages - Luyana and Kololo - during the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Kingdom of Barotseland was conquered by the Makololo people of present-day Lesotho. As such, Lozi is more closely related to Sesotho than it is to its geographical neighbors. It is written with a unique variety of the Latin alphabet.

The minute she said "lebetso laka ke..." I felt so emotional, she sounds like she's speaking either seSotho or seTswana. I never knew that people from Namibia do also share a language with us

Read about the Makololo(Sotho-Tswana) king Sebitwane. In 1830, they conquered our kingdom around Western Zambia for 30 years. Unfortunately, it ended very badly for them. After an epidemic, nearly all the Kololo adult men were then massacred during a rebellion around 1864. A few thousand survivors fled to Botswana, where they were annihilated by the Bamangweto(Tswana). That Sotho-Tswana tribe is now extinct, but their women were shared amongst local chiefs and warriors. The Lozi language is the Sekololo language, mixed with Siluyana our original language. It is a Lingua franca of over 20 distinct ethnic groups that make up the Barotseland Kingdom. So we are not a Basotho/Tswana tribe but have a history with them a carry a bit of their blood.

Yes silozi is in Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. The language is actually Sesotho but malozi failed to pronounce the words properly. They were overpowered by makororo and were forced to speak sekororo. Their language was siluyana. Now because of their failure to pronounce the words, this is how it is. While Sesotho say lebetso laka Silozi say libizo laka. Where Sesotho say Modimo, Silozi say Mulimu. Where it says Dumela they say lumela. Where they say bojara. They say bucwala etc etc.

@@user-vw6bk4pb4lYou are right but silozi is Sesotho. Only the luyana failed to pronounce the words properly. But otherwise all the lozi words are Sesotho but pronounced differently e.g Modimo- Mulimu in lozi. Dumela- Lumela in lozi. Bojara- Bucwala in lozi. Lebetso laka ke-- libizo laka ki in lozi etc etc

Because I know us Sesotho speaking people in Free State South africa and Lesotho got the accent for saying our R's from French missionaries. And we use them alot, and do you guys also gain the 3 Sotho clicks like Q, Qh, ngq? Rona re nale mantswe a ka reng Bo senqanqane, maqalong, seqhenqha, qobella etc you catch my drift...

We once had a visitor from Mozambique here in Botswana, we were very worried about how we would communicate since he spoke Portuguese and very little English and we spoke English and zero Portuguese. When I introduced myself he was like "wait, does that mean..." and he proceeded to translate my name perfectly in English. I was stunned. I asked him a few words in his language and we realized communication wouldn't be a problem at all, speaking setswana and tsonga

I heard about Silozi first a while ago.... I speak Sepedi. It sounds like Sepedi (60%) mixed with Sesotho spoken with Venda accent.

I'm a Tswana from South Africa and I had no problem at all understanding much of what you said because Tswana and Sotho are closely related and Lozi has its roots deeply rooted in Sotho. Now I really believe that it is true that a significant portion of Lozi people are Sotho people who migrated from South Africa under the Sotho Chief Sebetwane in the 1820s. See below, a Sotho or Tswana person from South Africa will have no problem understanding much of the Lozi language that is written below SiLozi English Mutozi/utozi chwani? How are you? Our history here in Botswana refers to the people of Sebetwane as Bakololo, some of them are in Botswana around Boteti and Chobe areas. In Botswana we also have Barotse but they acclimatized and speak the setswana that we speak here.

Utozi cwañi?* Ni inzi hande* Mutole hande* mutola hande is asking the person if they are having a good day. Ni kakubona kamuso* although we mostly say, "u lobale hande" or "mulobale hande" in plural or talking to an adult. See you tomorrow is "ni kakubona kamuso". "Ni kakubona hape*" means, I will see you again/later. Bokuku ba siina* Bokuku ba sisali* Bome* with one "m" Likaizeli* Muhulwani* Munyani* Malumaho translates to "your uncle" it doesn't matter if he's from your mom or dad's side. Malume means uncle I don't really know what an aunt in Silozi is but i think it's " bondate basisali" directly translate to "female father" in English.

A cousin in Silozi is mwana wabomalume or wa bobondate basisali or you can just say that, "ki muhulwanaa ka/muhulwani waka( older sibling) or munyanaa ka/munyani waka( younger sibling). We dom't really have a word for "cousin".

Not only Motswana and Mosotho will understand Silozi, Mopedi will as well. These languages, Sepedi, Setswana and Sesotho are mutually intelligible with each other. Among the trio Sesotho is the only one with clicks, Sepedi is the only one spoken in South Africa only while Setswana extends to Botswana as well. Sesotho is in South Africa and Lesotho. Now here we have a new member in our family Silozi.

Yes silozi is similar to Sesotho and tsawa because they are related. I am lozi by tribe, I was born in South Africa in 1961. I was told by my father that the lozi originates from Lesotho and DRCongo. Viva Barotseland Viva

Never mind, thats is accurate, Lozi people are made up of two main groups, one came from the South, heading Northward from the great wars and migrations, and the other group came from the Luba-Lunda country in Zaire (DRC). The spoken language is mostly of Southern influence, but in traditional ceremonies, the poems and verses are done in siLuyana, from Luba-Lunda, and has more similarities to the rest of the languages in Zambia, who share that regional history! @@kagiso2762

@@kagiso2762 well because we(Lozis) are trying to get our independence from Zambia and restore our self-governing state of Barotseland but the central government of Zambia don't want that so anyone who brings up talk of Barotseland independence is seen to be committing treason and are arrested. Many of our people have been shot and killed and many others jailed.

I'd like to refer you to John Iliffe's Africans: A History of a Continent, therein you will get the appropriate, in-depth and widely accepted information on African history, not Wikipedia-based information. Shaka's main enemies were other Nguni people as well as the British, not necessarily the Sotho tribe, as today millions and millions of Sotho people still live on their ancestral lands, right next to the lands of the Zulu. I hope you make more educated comments next time! :)

It came from South Africa. The Zulu attacked the Sotho, some of the Sotho, under Sebitwane, ran from Free State, into Botswana, and then into Zambia in 1838. Why do you think the so-called Victoria Falls is called "Musi O Tunya"? You a Sotho, I am not going to translate that to you.

Correct, it also have loads of Tsonga words. I have been to Katima Mililo in the Caprivi stripe and could easily communicate and hear the language.

Okay I love this. My name is Oarabile and I can write and speak Setswana but because I was raised in Pretoria I speak Pretorian, which is a mixture of South African languages but Setswana and Sepedi are dominant. I speak Setswana and I got so touched when I heard her say “my name is” in SiLozi as it sounds very similar to Setswana ❤ I got so excited hearing that.❤❤ The hairdresser told me the other day that SiLozi sounds like Setswana and I thought lemme find the sound in KZfaq and voila! Amazing. This was like a mix of sesotho and Tsonga. They apparently were driven out of South Africa by Shaka, during the uMfecane War. Most Zulus are conquered people from other SA tribes.

It's a hybrid of Sotho and chiluba from the katanga region of DR KONGO. 80% Sotho though brought to the Zambezi plains by the Kololo tribe of Lesotho escaping the Mfecane wars. They took over/invaded the settled tribe of The Luyana people and imposed their Sotho language and customs to establish the hybrid Lozi language and a Kingdom called Barotse land.

To: Africans I think all African governments should introduce a common African language such as siLozi,sepedi,setshwana,sesotho isizulu,etc, to be taught in schools. This will unite Africans and will prevent hatred between one another as we will be having a common African language to communicate with. That's true, quite similar to Khelobedu. And weird considering the fact that their ancestors were pure Southern Sotho (Basotho from the Free State because you're also Sotho from the North). But all in all it kinda shows how the different Sotho dialects formed in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
