First Wild Hive Relocation : )
And we were in waaaaay over our heads ... !!! ... I thought (maybe) we'd have a small cluster of bees and 2 or 3 frames worth of honeycomb, but it ended up being 19 packed frames, tons and tons of bees, and a day and a half (including 2 late nights) of surgery and transportation : )
Here's another few bee jobs we blogged about - thewinnebagodiaries.blogspot.c...

'yo gotta try one of those babies' - i was just like, "does this kid know what they're eating?" but a really cute video, its the sort of thing is like to do with my family, you all seem to have such a good relationship. and im happy ur taking your 'fair share' of the honey, im glad to see you care about the bees and not just making a profit from as much honey as possible.

What a helpful video ... it’s the only video that I’ve seen so far that shows how to transfer a wild bee hive comb to empty frames. The children were hilarious... it was wonderful to see how curious they were, and how patient you folks were. Thank you!

Your options would be what? Spray poison with reckless abandon? The way I see it, they're moving the bees to keep them alive. The fact that the bees provide them honey and that they may monetize that honey is called 'business.'

That's amazing and it sound like these kids know more than the average person from there questions. "Have you captured the queen yet?" "Have you found some drones yet?"

I'm not sure how I came to watch this film, but I'm glad I did! I don't have a particular interest in bees, other than knowing we need them and they're nice to watch on a summer day, but this was fascinating. You are clearly all such lovely people too. Inspiring stuff. I feel all warm inside now. Thanks!

Kudos for pulling off this monumental job. Don't know if it has been asked yet but it wasn't clear from the video if you guys paid attention to the orientation of the combs as you were putting them into frames. When they're built, the cells are oriented with a slight angle upward (9-14 degrees) rather than straight horizontal. It may not matter much for broods or capped honey cells. However for fresh un-evaporated nectar deposits, miss-oriented cells are likely to leak out the side. I hope everything turned out okay and your colony is still going strong.

you put the comb in the frames sideways, better to keep it right side up :) Also if you spray them with a bit of sugar water while in the vacuum bottle, less go in the air when you pour them into the hive
@pollenArts
@pollenArts 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah .. this was like a month after we started beekeeping, and we didn't know that the bees build at an upward angle. But they used all the comb as-is .. it was a sideways slant, not upside down, so the nectar seems to stay in just fine. This is the most productive hive we have right now. It weighs a ton and is full of bees : ) Interesting tip on the sugar water .. so that must weigh their wings down ?
@Rattlerjake1
@Rattlerjake1 9 жыл бұрын
pollenArts - Also, instead of using a dust pan, take a frame with comb and brush the bees onto it, they will stay on the frame. Put that frame back in the hive and grab another and do the same. When you locate the hive, pile some branches and limbs in front of the entrance to force the bees to crawl through and they will reorient to their new location. You won't need to move them miles away. Tip, use sugar water instead of smoke for most of your activities around the hive.

P.S. in a situation like that if the queen disappears or just cant be captured and you have this large hive waiting for her royal Beeness and your not lucky enough to have a queen about to hatched, what do you do? Do you go and like ask other keepers if they have an extra queen or do you order them online ? i hope you guys don't mind me askking question but this s amazing to me and something beautiful that i might get to do
@pollenArts
@pollenArts 8 жыл бұрын
In a big hive like this that has eggs and larva already, you don't have to do anything ... they just build some queen cells, feed that larva royal jelly only and she'll turn into a new queen : ) If they didn't have eggs, then I'd give them a frame of eggs from another hive and they'd use those to do the above ... or ... if you didn't want to wait for them to make a new queen you could buy one.

Notice the Mom is giggling! She’s laughing and talking with her children instead of gripping or yelling ... AND not correcting her HUSBAND! We raised 4 kids in suburbia south, all races, great family neighborhood! They had chores everyday, (trash dishes) housecleaning Saturdays. We didn’t give them $ for doin chores! Taught them to take care of their stuff without expecting something in return! About noon Saturdays, everybody outside building forts, ramps, on bikes, picnic lunches on somebody’s porch! Playin in the rain or sprinklers! We didn’t get our kids cell phones until high school. (They thot their lives were ruined!!) They had jobs during college, graduated, hired soon after graduation in their careers, doin great! (I must be missing them!)

This is normal precautions, suits & and smoke. From the earlier video on the double slit experiment, one might be able to see the difference between the one, with no suit and these guys. It's intense pain, to be stung. Many know, if it's predominantly on your mind/thoughts, likely to happen again. When otherwise even when disturbing swarm, with right thoughts/mental projections, otherwise. In short, there is/can be pain in learning. We are more cable as evidence shows, than most realize.

This hive is crazy productive .. super heavy and packed with bees. This was our first relocation, and yes .. we should have sought out that Queen right away. They made anew one right away, and she mated. They're a little more frisky now (but I'm saying that from checking on them in the Fall when they're a little more defensive anyway.) Very happy with this hive, and we're thinking about spitting it since it's still four stacks and mostly full after the winter : ) Thanks for the tips !
