The night of 27-28 September 2015 was a total eclipse of the moon. This was a particularly special eclipse as not only was it the closest super moon of 2015, it was also a harvest moon, or full moon nearest the September equinox, known as a blood moon because it presents the fourth and final eclipse of a lunar tetrad: four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months (full moons) apart.
We threw caution to the wind and decided to travel from Wicklow across the country to Donegal where the night skies are relatively free from light pollution to spend three days trekking and two nights wild camping in the remote and beautiful Derryveagh Mountains. We had a mixed bag of autumnal weather but were very fortune that the sky cleared around midnight, enabling us to fully experience, and get some time lapse of, the super blood moon eclipse from the summit of Slieve Snaght (678m). This remarkable celestial event will not occur again until 2033.
As always, we stayed at the excellent Errigal Youth Hostel (Dunlewy) before and after our trek. Thanks to Anne and team for the usual magnificent hospitality.

Sharron/Martin It looks like throwing caution to the wind certainly paid off to see the blood moon and have some adventure in a wonderfully wild place. Loved all the close up shots of those things that are easy to miss if time and attention is not paid. The time lapse shots at night and over Errigal were way cool. The water devil was the highlight though :-) The mixed light conditions provided a great contrast of how the area can change in character with the weather and the seasons. As always I felt the music provided perfect accompaniment. Brilliant stuff yet again, motivating and inspiring to just do it :-)

+gerry mcveigh Thanks, Gerry. As always, it's a gamble with the weather in Ireland for any celestial event and it was touch and go whether the skies would clear over Donegal to see the eclipse, while Wicklow was forecast to be cloud free hours beforehand but actually wasn't in the end! Filming in the wind is a particular challenge, but the rewards are fast moving cloud and, of course, the water devil!

+Adrian McGlynn Cleers, Adrian. The Derryveaghs are a gorgeous, but challenging place to film in, probably the windiest part of the country. We've never been there when it hasn't been howling a gale which makes it very hard to film! Glad you liked the result!

+Dermot M Yes, it's tedious alright! Especially uphill!! The exceptionally rough nature of the terrain and the fact that it's usually streaming wet underfoot and slippery in the Derryveaghs doesn't help either!

+garn fora ratch Thanks for your kind comments. Some parts of Ireland are similar to Scotland but the only really mountainous area is in the SW (Kerry). I see that you have been doing videos as well and we'll certainly have a look at these. Hope to get over to Scotland sometime to do some wild camping and climbing. Martin and Sharron

Well that was certainly worth the effort guys, you managed to capture a tetrad moon on a wild camp too wow! it was my lads birthday on the 28th but took a shot of the moon in the morning in front of the house lol. I don't know if your interested in this sort of stuff but they have fallen in line with a fair few Jewish feast days, of which people give them a special significance. Warnings of a very uncertain future, on a lighter note, that was some film from you two, truly a visual feast, you really cover some ground too :) Tim

+savedpurplecat Thanks, Tim. My ex-husband was Jewish, so I'm well acquainted with all the Jewish festivals. The blood super moon fell on the eve of Sukkot (the festival of the booths) this year, which incidentally finishes today! Glad you liked the film. ATB, Sharron

Hey martin I was just wondering what tent you used in this video
@EtherealLightPhotography
@EtherealLightPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
+James M Our tent here is a Terra Nova Voyager Superlite. This is a two person 4 season tent which weighs 1.5kg, although we also take a footprint protector groundsheet as well. it's a bit cramped and putting large rucksacks in the entrance is squeeze but we managed ok on a 6 day trek in Greenland. i've added extra guylines and bigger pegs to cope with windy conditions. The Quasar superlite might be roomier but a bit heavier. Martin

+MCIreland99 Thanks for your comments. Most of the video filming is done on Sharron's Panasonic FZ1000 and some on my LX100. We always film in 4K resolution. Timelapse is created created from stills taken with a Pentax dSLR, generally using a wide angle lens.
@MCIreland99

thanks Martin. how do u maintain the image quality when uploading a large 4k file like that? r u using compression software?
@EtherealLightPhotography
@EtherealLightPhotography 8 жыл бұрын
+MCIreland99 We upload to KZfaq at 4k resolution, output in H264 format from Premiere Pro editing software. Video files are typically 3Gb to 4Gb in size but we have 70Mb fibre broadband here in Wicklow Town for the last 6 months, so uploading isn't a problem. Prior to that we had slow ADSL and we generally only uploaded in 1080p or 720p and even then it could take 3 days to upload a video!

I'd like to start using Ireland as a wild camping destination, ( maybe ). Don't know too much about the place though, tell me, is wild camping legal or tolerated there, or are their laws regards wild camping similar to our own, I suspect its the latter?????. Thanks very much in advance.

+Dermot M What you said about respect 100%! Wise advice.
@Kernowclimber
@Kernowclimber 8 жыл бұрын
+James Stewart Dunn Martin and I do not usually camp nearer sea level as most of the land is either enclosed farmland, park-land or forestry. Some National Parks are OK with wild camping (the Wicklow Mountains National Park (WMNP) for example), but only in certain areas (in Glendalough it's forbidden). A permit to have a camp fire is required from WMNP (you're unlikely to find much wood in our boggy hills anyway!!) and you must follow the leave no trace mantra. In parts of Wicklow which is close to Dublin, there have been real problems with people wild camping in the upland valleys, making a nuisance of themselves, leaving beer cans/bottles, disposable BBQ trays, plastic bags and other rubbish, as well as chopping down growing trees and leaving huge fire scars. Consequently, some landowners have started to put up 'no camping' signs in some of the loveliest spots to spend the night and who can blame them? We generally find farmers to be great people across this country, always ready to stop for a chat and often ready with very helpful advice about ways up the mountains, local history, wildlife etc. We've never been moved on from a wild camp on a mountainside. As trekkers, we usually set up our tent or bivvies near sundown and leave first thing in the morning. If you come over here, I think you'll really enjoy wild camping in our hills. Check out our other videos and also those of Gerry Mcveigh (who commented above). We have all had some cracking wild camps across Ireland over the years.
