WILD CAMPING THE CLEVELAND WAY | Part 1 Helmsley - Slapewath

3 жыл бұрынIt was during lockdown i decided that wild camping The Cleveland Way would be the first thing I would tick off this years bucket list as soon as restrictions were lifted, so April 12th I made my way up north to Helmsley to begin hiking 110 miles across the north Yorkshire moors and down the east coast.
I did my first long distance national trail last year, hiking and wild camping The west Highland way and I had loved every minute so couldnt wait to get back on a trail again. We caught the train to York, then grabbed the 31X bus straight to Helmsley where we began hiking the Cleveland way early monday morning.
I really hope you enjoy watching my adventure along the trail, in part 1 we travel from the starting point to Slapewath which is almost halfway, I have tried my best to include some information you might find useful... possible locations to wild camp on the Cleveland way, pub stops on the trail, letting you know if certain cafes are closed due to lockdown and where you can fill up your water and snack supplies.

Today is Friday 23rd April 2021.. just four days after getting home from Yorkshire, I am now off to the Lake District to wild camp the Cumbria way! So make sure you subscribe to Drunk On Wanderlust to keep up with all my hiking and camping adventures this year.
The tent I used on this trail was a Salewa Litetrek 2, I am also testing out some brand new hiking boots - Keen Targhee 3 which I will do a review on in a few weeks after Ive clocked up some more miles :-)

This was great, I loved it. Fabulous to see so much of my local area here. Carlton Bank and Lord Stones I have been to on so many occasions; Highcliff Nabs views are astonishing and as I live only 10 mins drive from Guisborough, the Fox and Hounds at Slapewath is a pub I have walked to from home often. Cant believe I haven't done all of the Cleveland way though! Really looking forward to watching part 2. Great work ladies.

Aaaah ladies hurrah for part 1. What a fabulous video. Helmsley is stunning and Sutton bank the views are amazing. I visited there a couple years ago mind your I stayed in a posh hotel not a tent 😂😂. that was so good and such fun Kerry watching from my recliner...great effort again, hats off for 3 consecutive nights wild camping, I think that should be the legal limit before you have to stay in a hotel. I've definitely added this triail to my list

Didn't disappoint what so ever, great part 1 👌 always to handy to find a pub en route 😉 I used to live not far from Sutton, there's a great pub at the bottom... If you're after a good insulated sleeping mat, have a look at the exped down mat lite. I've used in -3 and had been awesome 👌 looking forward to P2 already 😁😁 x

Seen this one before Kerry. Posted my 2 stages from Helmsley to Kildale on your facebook page. Going back next Monday just to do Kildale to Saltburn. Coastal bit in a few weeks time. Great video Kerry, congratulations you two! Not sure what to make of that 🤣. Pubs closed, cafes closed, gloves lost, awful nights sleep 🤣 made for a funny video I suppose. Love the energy as always, and I’m the same constantly stopping off for snacks.. and a breather 🤣🤣😆. Was great to see some of my local area in this video, you really shown off how stunning it is. The white horse ... yeah I kinda felt the same lol. Looks good from a distance I suppose, and the ‘finest view in England’ is certainly a good view, finest in England or not. Yeah will be watching that tonight after work...and walked a lot of it but just day hikes and yeah I feel lucky living with these moors on my doorstep and the Yorkshire dales a 40 min drive the other side..2 of the most beautiful places in England...not that I'm biased... 😁

Nice one guys and hats off to you both as it looked very hilly and cold. The saying goes 'hike your own hike' and Leah, well mate you certainly did that, novel if nothing else, so good on you! Id of died within first two hundred yards. Looked a lovely walk, recognised part of it from the coast to coast (wain stones). Once again well done guys, Kerry thanks for all the work in regards filming, editing and taking us all with you, not withstanding actually doing the walk, so much appreciated you've earned your beer. Hope the glove turns up, your not the only one who freaks at Bulls, me too and just as freaked by cows, unless their under two feet high. Its a bugger when something gets lost. Anyhoo! Excellent video takes me back when I done it them hills just go on and on but well worth the effort very impressed with your attitude to keep going when you get a bit deflated good on you , as for a good air bed you could try the snugpak Antarctica its a bit pricey but for the comfort and warmth it's worth it really enjoyed this video will look forward to the next instalment ❤

I used to take both my sons camping about 25 years ago and we used to stop at a campsite about 2 miles outside Helmsley, which is a real nice place. Sutton bank reminds me of when I was a kid and my parents would take us up there on the way to Flamingoland, me and my brother would watch with horror, as my dad's old car struggled to get up the bank in the first gear😳. The day before lockdown ended we woke up to a snowstorm and 3 inches of snow, so lucky you did not start the day before😂. Yes, you pronounced Osmotherley right and another place we used to visit when we were kids. Tell you something, one way to warm up after a cold night - see if you can out run a bull and what a bloody racket he was making too! I had a the same experience with about 15 bullocks 6 years ago, with a group of friends (long story) so feel the same as you. The sunset at Incline Top was insane, I loved it, what a stunning place to camp for the night, despite the cold temps. Blistered feet and closed cafes, was not the best of starts for you but good to see you ploughed on the Captain Cooks Monument and I can understand why you missed out the Matterhorn of the North (Roseberry Topping), a place I have been climbing since I was a kid. Very well deserved scoff and pint at the Fox and Hounds and I am so pleased that you had dry and sunny weather - the Moors are stunning in good weather but bleak and challenging in bad weather. I have to say well done to you both and you did a fantastic job Kerry, not only the effort you put into the hiking but the editing and presenting, what a superb watch! Cheers Alan

Part 2 comes out tonight ... ok the Bull was bloody scary TBF purely because I’m scared of cows ... but, you could take a diff route slightly to avoid that field, that was the only cow encounter on the whole trail x thanks so much for watching ❤️

I really enjoyed these videos, Pt1 & Pt2. Two of the most beautiful stretches of the UK. Osmotherly to the coast is Amazing. The NE Coast, (Saltburn to Scrarborough), can only be bettered by the NI Antrim Coast.

Hi Niks! No I’d say they were about the same, both have a few tougher sections but then some much easier sections Cleveland way is a bit longer so an extra days walking x Both very pretty

Ahh that’s because I’m cold blooded like a lizard, 😂 before lockdown I was living in Thailand and before that I would backpack all over the world (hot climates) my body isn’t built for the cold 🥶

Great Stuff! Hoping to give this a go in late April! Is it quite easy to find wild camping? Always that gives me anxiety as used to backpacking in the USA national parks with designated spots!

Hi Melanie, thanks for watching! For most of it the camping spots were ok to find… some along the coast were trickier but not impossible as I managed most days 😁🙌 if you have a rough idea of how far you want to go each day you can kinda get an idea of where to camp on a map or if you think you’ll do roughly the same sections as I did I can tell you my camping locations There are also designated campsites along some of the coastal path section x The trail is awesome! You will love it 😍

Always appreciate a good proper campsite too as showers are a treat! Also looking at WHW later this summer so will be watching your go at that as well!

@@DrunkOnWanderlust it's a Teesside speciality Escalopes of Chicken smothered in bechamel sauce (the white sauce on Lasagne) then a thick layer of melted cheese. It cloggs your arteries but full of much needed calories on the Cleveland way 😊 Loving your trips K. Keep them coming lovely 😉
