Day 1 of the Cleveland Way 2019 started in Helmsley and was a fantastic 21.6 miles. I walked via Sutton Bank and the Yorkshire Gliding Club. I then headed over the moors before descending to Osmotherley.

Did the Cleveland way back in 1977 while in the army at strensall took three days all together,my biggest memory of it was when we reached filey, it was on the news that Elvis had died, thanks for the video, it brought back some very happy memories

Walked the Cleveland Way in Sept 2018. These videos really capture the essence of the trail and rekindled many happy memories. We walked it in 7 days and that was tough enough. Loved the whole walk, the Inland section is great and whilst the coast isn't quite up to North Cornwall standards (industry past and present is an eyesore) it's still impressive. For anyone contemplating this walk would thoroughly recommend these videos.

For me, the journey is the thing. Camping is a means to an end and ensures flexibility throughout this. I finished the CW in early September 22 - leaving Helmsley at 15.10 on 1st to arrive in Filey on afternoon of 6th. 6-ish days of walking with 5 nights accommodation. (In the summer, I always carry full camping gear, including sleep and food - even knowing options are available) Day 1 is lovely - lots of interest and staying Osmotherley YHA (camping was excellent - great hostel facilities and flat pitch! ) High Paradise appears to have 'wild camping' area - which is a super option for a shorter first day! Day 2 to Kildale is very tough - especially the first half! Fabulous moorland walk but the ups and downs are really challenging! Lord Stones is a godsend - and the only water tap on the route! I stayed in the Park Farm bunkhouse - a brilliant spot that I had to myself. Other camping and more civilized opportunities for this day are possible. For the rest: lots of opportunity for stops - camping, 'wild camping', B&B, hostels etc. I used Whitby and Boggle Hole (fabulous spot!) YHAs - linked with buses - using Scarborough as a hub. (Best bus to Boggle Hole requires a lovely walk through Robin Hood's bay and a walk along the beach! With planning or support, 5+ days would never be an issue for this fabulous exploration of North Yorkshire moors and coast Lovely walk .

Looking forward to watching your progress on the CW you should be blessed with weather as its alot less brutal then the pennines. Did the CW in '12 as a shakedown hike. Absolutely loved it has such a good mix and was voted the number 1 national trail! And think I'll be revisiting it again soon. Solid work for filming and editing as you go!! Happy trails dude 🤜

Walked the Cleveland Way Sept 2020 and am enjoying watching your videos which make me yearn to do it again unfortunately age is beginning to catch up with me and not sure I would manage it again. However one ot the memories that clearly stick in my mind was of the Queen Catherine Hotel at Osmotherly. Stuck in a single room at the back of the hotel overlooking the church with the clock continuing to strike the hour right through the night. Not ideal when trying to get a decent nights sleep ready for the next leg of the walk! I found the walk along the coast was fairly demanding but the history of industry past and present was well presented and provided many interesting and restful diversions along the way. I am given to understand that for some reason Staithes is pronounced 'Stairs'

Hi Dean, really enjoy your videos. Yesterday, I attempted Helmsley to Sutton Bank. After going past Rievaulx Abbey, I just followed the North Yorkshire country Walk symbols and got so far, bur decided to head back as it was so hot. Compared to the cleveland way coastal walks signs, there appears to be less obvious signs, which threw me. The next time should I just head through the villages after Rievaulx to pick up the official cleveland way?

Hi Kevin, my jacket is the Rab Firewall and I can't fault it in any way. I've had it a few years now and it's served me well in all weather. It absolutely chucked it down most of the day yesterday on the Cleveland Way and it kept me dry. I was in that area where that wooden (hobbit type thing) cabin was and there was a much bigger more luxurious one near it , it had what appeared to be a hot tub on the back and two catering staff working there and it had windows and I could see a deers head on the wall of it and a huge dining table and comfortable sitting area. Does anybody have any idea what that unique looking cabin and the other bigger cabin are for? Hunting parties ? Weddings? It seems completely remote (even though vehicles can obviously drive there) . The two catering women did immediately come outside and stand on the decking to watch us pass on the Cleveland way and said hello but we never asked them what the two buildings were for. We sort of got the impression that even though they were friendly there were obviously keeping an eye on us lol Unless they were just starved of human contact. But they did have a big Range Rover parked up so it wasn't like they were left there for days and weeks on end

Thanks for watching Laura. Only tips I can give really are build up your distance slowly and include as many hills as you can. Don't try and do too much too soon. Thanks for watching Lucy and for your feedback. Sorry it wasn't to your liking, my main motivation when making these videos is to create a record of my experiences that I can look back on in years to come. I try to include as much of the 'views' as I can but I also like to document how it feels to experience these environments, the highs and the lows so people can understand what it's truly like to do a long distance walk.
