WILD HOGS & Severe Drought Can It Get Any Worse. We might not be able to control Mother Nature but we can help control the Hog population.
Follow along as we take Hickory Flat Boar to help our local farmers out with their hog population.
Why do we do it?
According to a USDA study, wild hogs can be blamed for $1.5 billion in damages every year in the United States. The feeding habits of wild hogs make them particularly destructive to crops, woodland habitats, levees, moist soil units, golf courses, and right of ways.
Feral swine have been reported in at least 35 states. Their population is estimated at over 6 million and is rapidly expanding.
Harmful organisms and pathogens, carried by feral swine, which can infect humans include diseases such as leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis, brucellosis, tularemia, trichinellosis, swine influenza, salmonella, hepatitis and pathogenic E. coli.

My brother called me from southern Florida and he said that he needed me to come down there and help him get rid of a bunch of wild hogs. He said that they destroyed his property with the fruit trees and garden that was fenced in. They just put their noses under the fence and went right under. I asked him how many hogs did he see at one time and he said that he counted over 40 in one Heard. I know it has broken his heart to loose all his fruit trees that he babied for a few years. I told him that I would help him but I was going into surgery in a week to get a total knee replacement. But that I would be down there as soon as I could get heald up. He said they have destroyed all of his property. So just before I went to the hospital for my surgery I went to Walmart and bought the ( Hog Killer ) I bought a new Savage bolt action .17 HMR and I went to the hospital a few days later and got my knee replacement. After I got home from the hospital I ordered a scope and the mounts. Then as I was getting my balance right after the surgery I bought some ammo. A few boxes are the .17 HMR Ballistic rounds and some are the full metal jacket rounds. I ordered the ammo in .17 HMR grain. I have seen what the black tip rounds can do to a old pine tree. I've been needing to get it cut down for a while and I took the rifle out back and didn't have any scope on it yet but I put 3 rounds into the tree and it broke and fell. Then after I got the scope on it I took it to the river and I seen a good sized wild hog and I just looked down the barrel and fired one shot in the hogs head. The hogs head was blown apart and half of the head came off. I had seen my uncle hunt with his .17 HMR and I seen the damage from the round to a deer and I told my brother that I have a sweet shooter to bring down with me. He asked me what type of rifle it was and I told him. He said that he has never seen one. I told him that when I get there he will be ordering one for himself. I'm going tomorrow to the shooting range and laser sight the rifle in for a hundred yards and then I am putting a target out at 200 yards and see how much I have to elevate the shot. I pulled up the video on KZfaq of the rifle and I am impressed how the round blew out the center of the block of clay. I believe that my brother is going to want one when I drop hogs at a hundred yards and then 200 yards. I've got a box of the full metal jacket rounds and I might use those for the largest hogs. My brother told me he has seen some of the hogs that are over 200 pound's. I don't believe in waisting meat. I grew up in southern Florida with my brother and we know a lot of Spanish people who are working but poor. I know that if we shoot a dozen hogs that we can drive to the Spanish people and offer them to the people. In the center of Florida there's a lot of Spanish people who would be great ful for the Hogs and when word gets started that me and my brother are killing Hogs and giving them to hungry families I know we won't have any problem getting rid of them.

@@infectedoutdoors I am going to the shooting range tomorrow and site my scope in at a hundred yards and then I am going to see how much elevation I need to shoot at 200 yards. Down in southern Florida where my brothers property is located there's a great deal of acreage on either side of his property and at the back. I've just recently got a total knee replacement and I told my brother that when I get heald up and my rifle sited in that I am on my way. I grew up in southern Florida close to the center of the state and I have witnessed the devastated human bodies that were attacked and eaten by wild hogs down there. I've hunted the wild hogs with a knife and a dog and a piece of rope. But that was long ago before the wild hogs began to over populate the southern Florida that I knew. Growing up there I have stomped threw every swamp and sand bed in the center of Florida down to the Everglades. But that was before the wild hog problem got bad and people who had large snake's as pet's and when they got too big to handle safetly the idiots turned the snake's loose in the swamps and they are over populating Florida now. I've been friends with a old Native American women who is nearly a hundred years old now and she was a nurse in WW2. She doesn't know why the state allowed people to have the snake's and then just turn them loose. I've seen these really big snake's constrict a large hog and deer and even alligators. So I know that humans are on the menu aa well. I'm going to southern Florida and help my brother get rid of a lot of the hogs with the new rifle I just purchased. It's the .17 HMR Savage bolt action rifle that has a heavy barrel and I have just put a scope on it and tomorrow I'm going to the range and laser sight it in. I've heard that the Government has been paying people to shoot the wild hogs and when I get there I will get a permit

Do you guys eat some of them? Seems to me that the way they feast on crops, that they'd probably taste good.

There are some bullets that would have better penetration than others like some of the Barnes offerings or even the Speer Gold Dot LE; however, as many as y'all shoot in an outing, it would be madness to use a cartridge pushing 2.00 per round. I'm assuming y'all shoot 308. That's what I'd be shooting.

Feed them with corn for three or four days by just pour corn in tracks . After that feed them with corn soaked with alcohol and then it's easier to hunt them.

@@infectedoutdoors alcohol cheaper than bullet, just try it. Even sugar cane mollases from sugar industry, boars love it. Some person known to me mix alcohol to it and catch 46 in a single night, costs him just 5 dollars.

Most the corn we plant if for grain for other animals we eat. So for now I would rather save a cows food than a wild hog. But I do agree with you.

@@infectedoutdoors We had an old feed store in my home town. They had an old stone mill. They would put corn in it and make corn meal. The corn meal wasn't the finely ground kind as you get in the sores. It had a lot of moisture in it and made the best corn bread you ever tasted.
