Check out the animals from Oregon's Wild Horse Corral Facility available for online auction, September 1 to 8, 2020!
In this latest auction event, there are 20 horses from southeast Oregon and two from Nevada available for adoption, along with many other wild horses and burros from other parts of the West. The horses available range from 8 to 20 years old and come from the Triple-B (Nevada), Three Fingers, Cold Springs, South Steens, and Warm Springs herd management areas. These 22 horses are all eligible for the BLM's Adoption Incentive Program, which gives $1,000 to qualified applicants who adopt an untrained animal. Horses 11 years of age and older are available for direct purchase through the BLM's Sale Authority Program.
Before horses and burros are shipped from the facility, they are given a final brand and health inspection from a veterinarian. Horses adopted during this auction will be available for pick-up in Oregon, Illinois, and Oklahoma.
See all the individual animal profiles and sign up to adopt today: wildhorsesonline.blm.gov/Animals
If you have any questions, call 1-800-370-3936 or email blm_es_inet_adoption@blm.gov. Or you can contact Oregon’s wild horse facility: 541-573-2749.

4677 ( 0:36 ) will be a good one. Comes in and immediately stops to look around instead of panicking. That is some curiosity that’s good for training because they’d rather stop and think than run or attack 4735 ( 1:39 ) Is another good one. For mustangs it’s best to go off of temperament then color. This one comes in and is observing everything 4753 ( 2:18 ) another calm and curious one except this one has nice color. They’ll be picked up fast. 6379 ( 4:29 ) another good one. Comes in, spins all the way around, and ears are twitching listening, and looking at everything. For people who may not see the difference, compare these guys to 5187 ( 3:48 ) or 9376 ( 4:55 ) you can see how flustered these are. The fast feet, sharp turns, and panicked movement. They are more worried about figuring out how to escape, then using their brain. These two will probably be rough to train

4704 is absolutely stunning! she’s a great mover as well. I hope she ends up a working ranch with a kind partner, she looks like she needs some lovin. Overall she’s a pretty hardy mare and was probably my favorite out of this bunch. 6138 was probably my second favorite. Super confident, but knows her place, she’s gonna be an excellent intermediate horse once she’s broke. Oh, and her marking looks like Cape cod lol.

OK. I've watched this several times through. If I were to plink my money down right at this very moment I'd pick #4887 (super-solid conformation, but could use conditioning in the back end) or #5211 (really pretty mover-- and overall a very charismatic presence). If I were looking for another horse, I wouldn't have posted this. Ha! Lots of good horses here. All depends on one's needs for a given job.

One of my favourite things about these videos is reading the comments on which horses people would pick and why, you can learn some things! I've always loved horses but am not knowledgeable- I thought 4763 at 2:44 looked lovely, would some commenters tell me why a hose like this maybe isn't their first choice? Curious to see what people write :)

Why I wouldn’t want this horse is because it’s not my style (I like taller horses) but mainly because this one was nervous and looking for a way out the whole time instead of thinking and observing. Being so flighty will make this one hard to train. This mainly simulates how they will act when they arrive at your house, you want ones that sniff and observe despite being afraid, unlike the ones glueing themselves to the fence for a way out. There are also ones here with better conformation.

Actually #4763 is one I've had my eye on. The vid on her/him needs to be longer. What crossed this horse off my short-list is that it drives from the fore. (It's back end is dragged along by the front.) But again, would need to see more video, because this does seem to be a very lovely horse.

L I don’t disagree with you on that, I can fully understand why all of these mustangs are nervous and there are definitely worse ones than this one. I only mentioned that because this person asked about it specifically, that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be a good choice, it definitely could be an amazing horse. I’d prefer another one over the one mentioned, I was only pointing out the flaws that I noticed instead of the pros, I hope you understand.

Don't feel bad for them, they have access to daily feedings of food and have water all the time now! Plus, actual vet care! Can't get that in the wild. Unfortunately, most of the West is pretty arid - The Great Basin (Where the vast majority of Mustangs live nowadays) is only moreso. Horses are tough on the land and WILL eat themselves quite literally out of house or home if their population isn't under some kind of control. No one wants a repeat of what happened at the Nevada Wild Horse Range back in the 90's when that herd was left to fend for itself in the hopes of balancing it's own population. The result of that little "experiment" was just horrific. Scores of dead horses laying about everywhere and many more dying shortly after capture simply because they were too far gone to save. There weren't many survivors.
@conniekenny3829
@conniekenny3829 3 жыл бұрын
Emily Carrick , horses are grazers and movers, they’re nomads! The only way they starve is if they are fenced off from their range. No, humans will be the death of horses. People, private and corporate want the land that they occupy, so they’ve decided that they must annihilate them and they’ve gotten the government in on the plan (BLM).
@emilycarrick3570
@emilycarrick3570 3 жыл бұрын
@@conniekenny3829 Horses are not migratory, they can and do have preferred ranges that they stick quite closely to unless some sort of disruption or large-scale natural disaster forces them out and on the move in the name of survival. Barring "neutral" grounds like watering places, natural salt licks and stud piles, individual bands do not mix closely together. For multiple, individual bands to come together and form a huge herd that ventures off to places unknown.... like I said earlier, something absolutely catastrophic must occur for something like that to happen. It's not as simple of a manner of tearing every fence in the west down and allowing the "wild" (Actually feral, as these horses descend from domesticated stock abandoned decades ago) horses to go wherever they please. Horses have no concept of private or public lands. Some areas of the west ALREADY have problems with horses wandering into suburban neighborhoods, where they can and DO cause problems. They eat down the lawns and decorative plants which are often highly valued by the homeowners, they defecate on the roads and sidewalks which creates safety and public health hazards, people feed them unhealthy foods out of ignorance which occasionally kills them, people feeding them food in general (Even if it something that's safe for horses) teaches them bad habits, which in turn usually and eventually gets somebody injured, they have been known to act aggressively towards pet dogs as canines are often perceived as predators in the wild, they can and will break down fencing and other barriers to get to a water source.... even if that "water source" is a kiddy pool in someone's backyard. They've even been known to harass privately owned horses! Mare in heat? Guess whose going to try their darnest to get to her so they can breed her? Stallions of course! Got a gelding minding his own business? Guess what? Now a whole band of feral horses are going to spend much of the day hanging around him. Have a handsome stallion that you hope to breed one day? Uh oh, looks like the "wild" stallions are going to perceive him as threat to their mares and thus are will try to fight with him daily. And that's IGNORING how complicated it would be to tear every mile of fencing down in the first place. Fence law is quite extensive and much of it has been on the books for nearly a century.... it would be near impossible to bring the fences down in the HMA's and let the horses roam "free". And you're definitely not going to get the local's okay to do that! Horses on a whole are not endangered, there are quite literally over 9 MILLION horses who live in the USA. Worldwide, they're numbers are even higher. Even the "wild" horses of the west have never enjoyed a booming population like they have now. Nearly 100,000 thousand are roaming free as we speak. 50,000 MORE are in private or public care off of the range. The last time these animals were so populous, it was the turn of the 20th century. Private individuals and corporate interests have always had a presence on public domain land. It took until 1934 act for the government to step in and try to make some sense out of the situation and control who does what with those lands thanks to the rampant misuse that had gone on until that point. The government have always had a hand in controlling "wild" horse numbers. The predates the 1971 protection act by many decades. Since 1974 it has been mandated that public lands be managed for multiple uses:- So yes, the horses do have to share with ranchers and hunters and tourists and miners and energy companies and goodness knows who else. You're going to have a hard time finding very many politicians willing to change any of those laws in favor of the horses above all else. I hope that this has been education for you.
@conniekenny3829
@conniekenny3829 3 жыл бұрын
Emily Carrick, feral, like cattle, sheep, goats? There have been horses in North America before people. ‘Feral’ horse here is just the nomenclature given to them by our government. I hope you have been educated as well.
@emilycarrick3570
@emilycarrick3570 3 жыл бұрын
@@conniekenny3829 While horses did originate in N.America, that population died out thousands of years ago. The coming of the first people to N.America is believed to have played a role in that. Our current modern day population of horses descends from a small number of horses who crossed the the Bering land bridge before that happened. The horse was originally domesticated for meat and milk long before someone had the idea to ride them or use them to pull carts. Now technically speaking, the government (The Bureau of Land Management primarily, though the Forest Service also manages a number of herds) defines "wild" horses as those who historically resided on US public lands at the time of the passage of the 1971 protection act. Horses who did not meet that definition did not receive protection and are typically referred to as "estrays" and are usually controlled by local law enforcement agencies. Feral is a catch all for horses (And all manner of animals!) who descend from domesticated stock that were turned loose to fend for themselves and subsequently reverted to anti-social behavior. It's the only term that encompasses all types of horses who roam free on US land without getting into the confusion of legal terms and how they apply to different populations. Makes it easier for laypeople to understand. You won't find the BLM or the FS using it.

The BLM is required by law to control the population numbers. If allowed to over-populate, the mustangs will starve and that is anything but a nice death. And before it comes to that, they will eat the rangelands down to nothing, damaging them and ensuring that no animals will be able to survive off the land even if all of the mustangs die off. It can take literally years before the rangelands of the Great Basin recover! Theoretically there are too many of them, although if you look up the work of Allan Savorry on using herd animals to rejuvenate landscapes using certain techniques of moving them around there could maybe be ways to actually help the landscape with them. Also ranchers want the land to put cows on...I think that is what is really going on.

Don't feel too sad for them, they have guaranteed food, water and vet care now. Life is hard in the wild and horses are tough on the land, they'd all starve to death if the occasional gathering didn't remove some of them for adoption.

They don’t sell them immediately after bringing them in, they choose ones to sell/adopt and they go through some prep.

They're just a little spooked. Wild horses can't stay wild anymore, they're too overpopulated. They need to be adopted out to save them.

Gilliahn P. Couldn’t we just release them near the Canadian or Mexican border?
@yagirlsilverr
@yagirlsilverr 3 жыл бұрын
@@3ckell3 Unfortunately no, there's no food fro them there and it would interfere with private livestock herds. They've gotten to the point where they've over-eaten all the food and are dying of starvation or severe colic from eating sticks and dry brush. Because of cities and roads, they can't migrate like they used to in the cowboy days.

Yeah sure, set them free.... to eat their HMA's (Herd Management Area) down to nothing and then starve to death slowly and agonizingly. Yep, what a humane outcome that would be. /s
