I adopted a few of the wild horses from The Bureau of Land Management and bought them to my farm in Puerto Rico. They are wild and I let them hang out down by the river that flows through the Middle of my farm. I can walk through them without any problems. I might adopt a few more.

they talk about birth control in this and its like....why dont they just castrate the male horses and then let them go. not every horse needs to be castrated but you could do it to a certain percent and it's fast and cheap. all you gotta do is clamp the testicles or even put a rubber band around them when they are young and they eventually die and fall off. sounds horrible but it's better than killing them and is really cheap. the ranchers need the land. i love horses but they are an invasive species that is not built to live in this environment. the pastures arent fit for them so it gets destroyed, this happens frequently with invasive species. i feel like the company that gets all the money to care for those horses is probably just pocketing most of it. i seriously do not understand why they are acting like nothing can be done. they could even use long acting birth control that lasts years on the females if they dont want to castrate males. that would be cheaper and easier. its probably just like the prison system, where they say they need so much to care for each horse and the government gives it to them...but then they only spend a fraction of what they get from the government and take the rest home.

@@wmd40 Wild horse herds maintain stable populations: records have been kept on many of them for 30 years, and their populations have remained stable. The long gestation period of the horse, followed by the years spent nursing her single foal before the mare is free to breed again, together with the limited number of breeding pairs in any given year, makes it clear that horses have a SLOW reproductive rate, NOT a fast one. Add to that, that Cougars and Wolves take foals, and you will see that they are only maintaining their numbers. The issue is NOT any problem with wild horses, but the GREED of humans. There are millions of cattle being given preference over the actual modest number of horses, and contrary to your notions, horses ARE built to live in this environment and have PROVEN that over the last 500 years and millennia long before. They are NOT an invasive species; it's the propaganda of the system that teaches people to believe such things. Wild horses migrate, so they eat lightly on the land, traveling as they go, which gives the vegetation time to regrow. Cattle, on the other hand, camp out next to their water source, eating the vegetation down to the ground and pulling it out by the roots, denuding the land. This has long been known, while they also eat the bark off trees, which kills trees, but horses don't do that. Have you seen the west? There is a tremendous amount of land that is not used. It's an agenda that is without truth or understanding of the fact that horses are a Keystone species such that they distribute seed, nutrients and enzymes everywhere they migrate, nourishing the land, enriching the soil, creating a better, richer environment for all species of Life on the land. Just like the most efficient way to regrow the rain forests is to reintroduce the elephant (another Keystone species for the same reason), the fastest, most efficient way to enrich the land in the west, is to let wild horses feed and migrate as they do. They are part of Nature, not outside it.

This is difficult but I'm an equestrian and I think that if the birth control plan doesn't work, hunting of mustangs should be reinstated and regulated. What is happening to them now is no kinder than the fate of being hunted. The fact is that the wild mustang is an invasive species in the Americas. They weren't here first. We brought them here. Even without the cattle and sheep problem, the horses would eventually overpopulate themselves and cause their own starvation. They have no natural predators in North America, yet they reproduce like prey that needs to keep up with predation. I hate the idea of horses being hunted, but I hate the idea of them slowly starving even more. We treat deer the same way. Deer are beautiful and should be preserved but we continue to hunt them to control their population. Why is that okay, but doing this for wild horses is not?

Well, some people are probably going to hate me for this, but maybe they should allow hunting of the wild horses to keep the population under control. It's better than them overgrazing the land till there is too little grass and they starve to death. If they regulate it like how they regulate hunting deer, then it should be fine. Maybe re-introducing more predators into the areas they are over populated would help too. I'm not really surprised that they are having trouble finding them homes because they are large animals who need a decent sized pasture and a lot of care. Most people don't have the time or space for them. The people that do only have two or three because that is what they can handle. Not many people go horse back riding.

Wether or not they are native to the American continent, through fossil evidence or reintroduced. They have been a part of this land for hundreds of years now, they have just as much of a right to be here as we do. They are as native and entitled to the continent as we are. This idea that horses are the problem, maybe they are, but so are cattle and sheep, as well as us. Do we forget how many cattle there are compared to these wild horses? And the amount of damage they do to land as well. If the wild horse is bad then domestic cattle and sheep are just as bad.

All parts of the world have different views on “edible” animals. Who is correct? The US? Why? Ethically, eating an animal is eating an animal, whatever the species. You’d better be a vegetarian if you are against eating horse meat, to avoid hypocrisy. All livestock in America are invasive species and are detriment to the environment. The biggest problem with America’s horse issue is that a lack of definitive action has caused animal suffering. That is a human issue.

To most people in America eating a horse is like eating a cat or dog. Other people have no opinion of it. Most people don't want any sort of slaughter to be legal, and honestly if the BLM would listen to the advice they are given this wouldn't be a problem. They chose to ignore the study the Nation Academy of Science did, saying that there were better ways to manage the population. They also ignored all of the fertility control programs that have been recommended. The more you read into it the more you will understand why people are so against these roundups, and all of the errors the BLM has made. No news outlet is really going to tell you the whole story. You will either get one side or the other, and if you don't get that, the details you get are dated and, in some cases, untrue.

I'm pretty sure Native Americans (or as I like to call them, "real Americans") do not consider wild horses to be a positive symbol of how the "West was won". That's what really bothers me about this law. Another (lesser) thing that bothers me is that horses were introduced by Spaniards; horse aren't even native to America... Come to think of it, I guess that makes them a apt symbol. Anyway, since they're not native, it seems a bit silly to be super concerned with their preservation. Besides, 20% growth (per year) is pretty darn fast! Seems like they wouldn't need THAT much protection. In the mean time, there are plenty of endangered species that DO need protection. It's pretty frustrating to know that they receive far less sympathy and government resources. Because of their value as domesticated animals, horses are never going to go extinct. This just seems like a super disproportionate allocation of sympathy and federal resources.

Current theory holds horses are native to the Americas and evolved here. They are NOT native to Asia, Europe or Africa and are recent immigrants. Only the modern horse Equidae is found there and only in the Americas can you see evolution of the horse through the eons. They crossed into Asia through the Berring land bridge into Asia where they became domesticated. About 10,000 years ago they died out with most of the mega fauna, possibly due to man coming here and wiping them and other large mammals out. Columbus brought horses back on his second trip where they re-established. 10,000 years is nothing in reality and most of North America was still prime habitat for horses.

Elk came to North Amer. about the same time as human first did, around 14.000 years ago. Horses are the most Native having been in north Amer. longer than any other current hoofed animal. Mustangs are a symbol of our wild west, and they really shouldn't be monitored by the BLM which puts them in a bad spot. Something that I find rather ridiculous is the fact that there are numerous "wild west experiences" for tourism, but the BLM is not capitalizing on it to help supplement their funds. How much does it cost to use that helicopter? Why not take some of those tourism resources and have people pay to help round up the horses? Also remember adopt a whale? Why not adopt a horse? STOP banging your heads against a wall thinking that something needs to change and start working on finding ways to make it change. Make the BLM the BLM and have the horses managed by a federal heritage group. Use tourism to 1. round up the animals in a more humane way, and 2. use tourism and everyone's love of the mustangs to promote and raise awareness as well as funds. Take the offer globally as there are many other Nations fascinated by our American Wild West as we are of the English Monarchy.

The phrase there is just so much grass out there and it is already spoken for (with a pic of sheep) is misleading. Wild horse areas are only on 3% of Fed. land, other livestock on 95%. Only a tiny fraction of ranchers have permits on herd areas, and guess what, the horses were there first. Livestock only granted in in 1976 after the industry boohooed.

The issue is that for all the claims of environmental activism, the protection of wild horses in America really takes no precedent over ranchers. Wild horses are not native to the US and have actually had a severe impact on the local ecology. So when ginger says 'oh blame the livestock' it's a bit rich since the horses are as alien to that environment as the sheep and cattle are but at least provide food etc. Bear in mind as well that this comment is coming from someone who is vegetarian and pro environmental activism. I support the reintroduction of wolves for example. But when you have a case of a feral species clearly and severely impacting both the environment and local industry when it was never meant to be there to begin with, you clearly have a problem with the animal being there.

If you've ever looked into the history of the Americas and if you claim to care so much about the environment and ecology then you should know that horses are indeed native to America. The genus eques first evolved in America and the horses are designed for North America so I have no idea where you're getting this "severe impact" on the local ecology from. Compare 18,000 horses (in total) to millions of sheep and cattle and please tell me that horses are the ones causing the shortage in the grass. The only reasons horses ever left the continent is because of the land bridge that formed. Millions of native animals migrated across is searching for new land to expand and ended up not being able to come back. They're not alien or invase, they're an original native species that have been reintroduced which again is something that is proven to help ecosystems not hurt them. The best way to heal an ecosystem is to restore it and fill in the niches, but since cattle and sheep have taken up the niche of large grassing mammal it has now become a competition for resources. I really hope you're just too young to have learned about this, not ignorant.

+valzerna No. Americans (by and large) regard horse meat as disgusting, even though the vast majority have never tried it before. Another way to look at it is that the latter fact is a cause of the former. What meats are acceptable is admittedly pretty arbitrary, but also pretty hard to change.
