The plight of family ranchers pulls at heartstrings but it isn't the reality of public lands grazing. 97% of US cattle producers do so on private land. The bulk of the grazing leases are controlled by a few giant corporations including Walmart, Koch Industries, JR Simplot, Barrick Gold, Hilton, Hewlett Packard and McCaw Cellular. They don't need subsidized grazing to make a living. Private cattle and sheep outnumber horses by millions to less than 50,000. Private cattle and sheep are allocated 90% of the forage. It is ridiculous to think that the horses need to be killed. Especially when there are groups standing by to voluntarily administer PZP which is cheap, safe and effective.

I'm already ready for everyone to slap me on this one. I'm sorry, but there's plenty of land for these horses. We just need to find a different way for these Cattleman to be happy and cattlewomen, LOL.

How is it possible for the population to double every year? Some of the horses are males! And the gestation period is 11-12 months, meaning at the very most, a female could only product one per year if there was a 100% survival rate. Please consider that this is taxpayer subsidized public land, not private ranchers' land. These taxpayer-subsidized public land ranchers pay a ridiculously low fee of $1.37 per cow with calf per month. Half of the federally protected mustang territory was taken away for the private profit of livestock or other industries at the expense of our wild horses & burros, which were rounded up and kept for a lifetime of captivity in holding pens- - -also taxpayers' expense. It is absolutely insane to keep our wild horses & burros in captivity so that private ranchers can graze their livestock (for private profit) on federally designated mustang territory.

Horses are native to North America and lived here for millions of years. There is mounting evidence that they never went extinct here as previously thought. Many Native American tribes insist they had them before Columbus. Even if they did go totally extinct and were reintroduced by the Spanish, their DNA is identical and they've been here 500 years.
@xemcx

Thing is there is proof that they went extinct during the small ice age in america and its documented that europeans took them to america.
@LeeAnne151

There is no proof they went extinct. It was assumed, never proven. Even if they did, horses lived here for millions of years and have lived here now for 500 years. They are outnumbered by private cattle about 37-1 on our public lands and the grazing fees don't even cover the administration of the program. Public Lands Grazing costs the American taxpayer over $125 million a year.

Yes. Although the Great Plains of America are prime land for horses, similarly to the Eurasian Steppe where they are truly native to, they are not native to America. If you want to get technical they are an invasive species.
@wezylinn
@wezylinn 3 жыл бұрын
First of all, 23,000 was the number of horses when they made the law to protect them because they were near extinction. That's an almost extinct number, not a healthy number. And secondly, you can't say there are too many horses without mentioning their competition for forage, the cattle owned by ranchers, which graze the same land and number in the millions. This is compared to only 80,000 horses.

The solution it to make a call and take out a portion of them like we do with other animals. You need to balance the population of animals or else you get other populations that die. Sometimes they need help to flourish and sometimes they dont. When we had wolves im sure the horse population was more kept in check. We got rid of the predators but that opens up would be pray to flourish unnaturally.

The livestock do not belong on public lands, I don’t graze my horse at the location state park. 14.2 head of livestock to every 1 horse on public land

14.2 head of livestock owned by private ranchers graze on public land to every 1 federally protected wild American mustang. You tell me what the problem is? My tax dollar should not supply grazing pasture to fat cat ranchers an the cost of horses lives

Horses evolved in North America. Their fossils have been found from Los Angeles to the Dakotas. Estimates say they disappeared 10,000 years ago but what if they did not?

Back in the Pleistocene there were Smilodon and cave lions to hunt down horses, and wolves are few and far between in North America. There's no predators to keep them down.

Fuck off you petty vegan coward. Before horses were domesticated they were hunted for food. This hunting directly led to their domestication, infact they were the second animal to be domesticated after dogs.

@@tipndieselriddle2839 So how did they get here in the first place ? 10000 years only means a horse is feral. It has to do with if the animal " belongs " here or was brought in from another place. Even humans can be considered feral !

Stop valuing animals in how "cute" they are. Horses are an invasive species and need to be managed, for their own sake. Just look at those starved mares. Wolves could probably hunt horses really well, but that's an even hotter potato than wild horses. Plus, horse meat is delicious, and with no predators around, it's going to waste.
