Gotta say Stars coach handled the refs explanation quite professionally.

This is the second time Pavelski got injuried this badly in a playoff series, hopefully he'll be okay.

And this man comes back today and scores 4 goals against the Kraken in game 1. Losing effort but good for him. Clearly he came back very strong from this massive hit!

If I had a nickel for every time Joe Pavelski was hit in a playoff game leading to the officials calling a 5 minute major (whether or not the major was upheld), I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice. All joking aside, hope Pavs is alright.

I really like that the refs seem to be using this penalty review rule in a good way and for the most part just calling it a 5 instantly so they can review it and change it later.

To all of you who are saying the injury was caused by impact on the ice, while some of it could have from ice impact. I’ve watched this a couple times and it looks like Pavelski was out before he hit the ground, he didn’t brace himself at all for the fall to the ice.

ESPN announcers are brutal. All of them. All the time.

These refs doing everything they can to stop a fight is gonna end up getting somebody hurt worse because the ref is tying up their arms leaving them completely vulnerable. I know that's not the subject of this video but I'm getting so tired of seeing this.

Terrible take by the announcers. First it’s a clean hit, then they say it’s late, headshot, and should be 5min, then say no penalty was the right call (which it was).

The fact the Wild has Reeves, Foligno, Middleton, Dumba, Hartman, etc. makes me think they will be just fine for any retaliation from Dallas

The second the scrum starts Suter locks onto Kaprizov, and continues to bully him all night. And people are saying the wild we’re playing dirty, they were taking every chance for a cheap shot at the Thrill, lost so much respect for Suter as a former wild player

We need better announcers. There was a lot of talk about upward momentum and elevating, but I’m not sure that’s relevant here. When the players are skating toward one another that rule is easier to understand. In this case the players were skating in the same direction just prior to contact, and it’s pure shoulder on shoulder. Both players go flying after contact. If they’re going to have Dave Jackson on standby he needs to do a way better job explaining exactly what the rule is and how it applies in this instance.

Pavelski looks done for this playoffs, hope he gets better soon. Really hard to define if it was dirty or not. I could be missing important context from the video but seeing Dumba smiling in the box is going to add the hate he will endure further into the series.

My coaches always told us to finish our hits. Looks like Dumba was just doing what we have all been taught.

Not really a fan of Dumba or the Wild. But I am a fan of good hits and that, was a great hit. Text book finishing your check. And for the announcer to say that it was late. And he wasn't anticipating a hit. Do they realize this is playoff time? He should stop watching the slow motion replay or switch to figure skating.

Damn, this series is going to get messy quickly. Got a feeling the winner of Avs/Kraken is going to have a handicap going in with the physical toll this series will take on Wild & Stars.

Game 1 is the toughest one to win for any team. Like it or not it’s not going to be good to carry it over to the next game. The coaches know what they’re doing and don’t want to lose any of their players to injury or stupidity just to get back at the other team. The game is fast paced and rough/violent at times but it’s a chance every player takes stepping onto the ice. I’m hoping that the guys play for the cup mentality and not revenge but time will tell.

Tbh it's probably the correct call. Physicality increases in the playoffs and it honestly looked like a pretty clean hit.

shoulder to shoulder but late. not sure on this one at all. all i knew is when i was making my picks in my pool ---- this was a tough call to make on who would win this series. my thoughts were that wild will go for a punishing series but i took stars cuz of benn

So I tried to get a stopwatch and time it to see how much time there was between the puck leaving Pavelski’s stick and the actual hit. I couldn’t get exact numbers every time but I usually got somewhere between 0.90 seconds and 1.02 seconds. I’d probably consider that to be a little late but it’s not so late that it’d be called interference everytime, it’s probably right at the edge of being interference. What is interesting is how the angle at 0:43 looks like it was sort of high but the other angles look like it’s shoulder on shoulder. From just a quick look it looked a little high on the angle at 0:43 but that could just be a result of the camera angle, but that one’s kinda up in the air. Idk, I think he probably could’ve gotten a 2min minor for interference but it definitely wasn’t a crazy dirty hit compared to a lot of others, so I’m not really bothered that they didn’t give him a penalty. That’s just my take.

Keep your head up next time, Joe. That was a righteous hit and Dumba should not have been penalized at all. Man's game.

Scary. Taveres got kneed in the dome by Corey Perry vs Montreal, Paveliski got tied up landing head first against Vegas leading to a really bad call causing Vegas to lose a game they had total control of, and now this. That’s a dang it. Poor Veterans

It's honestly pretty entertaining the amount of Stars fans losing their mind on Twitter trying to call this hit dirty and malicious, and then it gets even better when somebody posts a picture of Suter cross-checking Kaprizov in the ribs multiple times. I actually saw some Stars fans trying to justify Suter as playing hard to wear down his opponent while screaming at Dumba for this hit. Playoff hockey and clueless fan bases is back. I'm just gonna sit back and watch it all unfold then I'll see y'all on Lotto Day

As a sharks fan, I still love Pavelski and hate to see this happen to him. However, it was a perfectly fine hit. The penalties that I thought should be assessed were, aside from Dumba getting two for roughing. Best wishes to Pavs. 🤞

Let's get a few things very clear: 1) The near referee turns away and doesn't see the hit. So the initial 5-minute major call must (we hope) come from the far official. 2) This was a shoulder to shoulder hit. As a 25+ year referee, there's no justification here for a major penalty. The far official either saw it wrong, or the near referee guessed wrong. Good thing there is review. 3) The argument "but it was late" is a weird one. The NHL rulebook defines "interference" as "The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession." The statements: "the last player to touch the puck...considered the player in possession", "may be checked legally", and "immediately following his loss of possession" are CONTRADICTORY statements. According to the rule, Pavelski is considered "the player in possession" because he is last to touch the puck. And just because it's not on his stick, by this rule wording, doesn't mean he has "lost possession". According to wording of this rule, "loss of possession" would occur when another player (other than a goalie) touches the puck. But that's not how the rules are applied.. Something's off in the rules.

That’s a CLEAN hit, seriously what a joke, so now we fight after every hard clean hit. BTW Sutter was cross checking Kaprisov back to freaking Moscow, what about that?

Clean hit, unfortunately looks like after the shoulder on shoulder, their heads hit each other, and joe took the worst of it. Hope he’s ok and comes back soon. You can say it’s late when you’re seeing slow mo, but not really late at all.

As a Wild fan, I will admit I've never been a big Matt Dumba fan. But that hit, it was clean. Despite being late, it's still shoulder on shoulder. Paveliski's head unfortunately hits the ice once again and he gets injured. I feel bad for Pavelski, but it's a clean hit. It just looked dirty because of how extremely fast-paced the game of hockey really is. Hopefully, Pavelski can heal quickly and return maybe later on in the series. You never want to see a good player get hurt due to hitting his head on the ice a 2nd time. Hopefully you'll heal, Joe.

0:59 You can see Pavelski's white stick near his neck. I bet his own stick made contact with his jaw and knocked him out. His head hitting the ice after the fall probably did additional damage. Hope he's okay, that was scary watching him being helped off the ice.

Never want to see a player injured like that but at the same time that's a legal check shoulder to shoulder and it was not late either as pavelski just got rid of the puck

Haven’t we run the hockey in the south experiment long enough to know it’s not working? The fans down there still don’t understand the game. They still believe basketball is a physical sport. Let’s start moving these teams back up north. I would even be good with Wisconsin getting a team.

That wasn't even a penalty, bad call. Unfortunate for Pavelski to hit his head on the ice but the hit was clean IMO.

Dallas fans can be as upset as they want. That's a clean hit and the right call on all fronts. Curious about the ruling on the misconduct, did he say 2 for roughing and 10 for continuing?? If so, I honestly think that's groundbreaking. I like it when a ref tells me WHY he's calling what he is. I may not always agree with the reason, but at least you're justifying your personal discretion (or explaining the rules, which most fans don't understand because the refs' interpretation of the rules has been inconsis... I'm rambling. Not worth it.) Hope more refs start doing this.

Pavelski is engaged with Hartman, and both Dumba's skates are off the ice (left barely off). The contact of the hit is shoulder to shoulder.

It was a good hit. Dumba doesn't shy away from anyone, and if the Stars want to go after Kiprizof, they'll be seeing a lot more of Reaves, who will be happy to let them try and take it out on him, but you won't see that pesky gnat Domi stepping up, he'll be looking to jump someone from behind.

That's just a good hit.. A little late by regular season standards, but that's just a good finishing hit/check in the playoffs. Keep your head up and EXPECT to be hit..
