WILD WHEELSTANDING STRAIGHT AXLE 56~57 CHEVY GASSERS AT RT66 CLASSIC '14

Mike Bilina's '56 Chevy built in 1965 with the straight axle, engine set back, glass tilt nose , spindle mounted front magnesium american mags,(no front brakes),glass doors and trunk with nothing changed except a fuel cell to replace the beer keg gas tank and wheelie bars. Now the motor is a 496ci chevy, turbo 400 and 488 gears in an olds/pont rear end, home made ladder bars hooks pretty good for 60's technology takes on Nick Shervino's '57 Chevy, which was an original barn find of what was believed to be a former drag car. The car was in terrible shape and Nick restored it into its present glory with House of Kolor Paint, 461ci Chevy, Coan Turbo, Ford 9", 4 wheel disc brakes and straight axle with rack and pinion steering. First run Mike takes the win with a 10.79@124.05mph as Nick runs 11.22@121.19mph. In the second run Nick gets the win with a 11.91@119.53mph as Mike gets out of shape and runs 12.19@125.10mph. Reminds me of watching these two gassers put on a show every week. The red one was called Wild cherry and the yellow one was called The Hairy Canary.Wheels up launches every time. I remember this like it was yesterday. This was in Phoenix in the 70's. my dad was bracket racing then.

First, Great camera work! Thank you very much for knowing how to film a drag race. Showing start to finish with the clock at the end of the run with the time displayed. 2nd. For having a great camera that is clear and focused. 3rd. For NOT filming the sky, ground, or the back of someones head. I'll subscribe just for that.

First , yes I totally agree on camera work, that's how it should be done , and work the zoom in and out, HOWERVER!....you left the tree out, you can obviously tell the 56 took off way before 57, and freez at 3:40 You can see the red light , closest to you. very enjoyable video.👍

I have to laugh to myself every time someone calls all classic chevies "Bel Air". The announcer called the 56 a Bel Air and it is obviously not. Still great to see a 57 vs 56 race.

I wonder what happened to the '57 Chevy "Jail Bait" that used to run 10:90's at old U.S.30. The trunk was kick ass. On the left side was an 8 mo. preg gal and on the right side it said "Time to Worry" which also meant that you were BEHIND him in the race. To me, the 60's were about drag racing. Not Woodstock crap.

That '56 was loosing parts on the track like crazy! Trunk lid was flopping and looks like it skidded down a wall in the left side at least once! I wouldn't want to race in a lane next to either of them!

About 15 yrs ago NHRA had a Cacklefest for Gassers @ the US Nationals, it was as cool as a Nitro Cacklefest.

Bowling Green has a yearly cacklefest where they line up all the old school front engine dragsters and gassers on track at night. Great event besides the heat lol

The'56 has a straight axle. The '57 has a _dropped_ I beam axle.

Too many nowadays think racing is only about quickness and speed. They forget the little guys that build their cars at home, having friends help. NHRA always promoted faster, faster then...ohhh we're scared. How about allow speed and quickness but they must be down to a predetermined speed at ? Distance past the traps. Brake companies would then become sponsors and racing would be contributing to safety and improved braking systems for all. But they took the easy coward way out.

A friend of mine that I used to race with when we were kids he had a blue 57 Chevy I had a 69 Dodge charger we both had four speeds he wanted to race for titles long story short I beat him up and I beat him back and then we traded cars and I beat him a third time he didn't want to race the 4th. 🤔
