Such heavy primates would not be tree-bound, take for example a gorilla, the heavier you are, the more effort bodyweight exercise will cost, oh and also the cost of falling when you weigh half a ton versus 60kg

it depends on the situation, as he said a silverback gorilla will defend the group even if it dies. However i dont think the giganto would have a reason too attack a gorilla in the first place unless they were omnivores like us

@John Craftenworth Brother, I don't think you realize how massive this creature was. It probably had the strength of five gorillas and also likely lived in a family. The gorillas would not have faced a creature like this. It would be similar to a group of hippos taking on a group of elephants. A fight with such massive creatures makes no sense. The gorillas would have avoided confrontation with them to preserve their lives. Regardless of how strong something may be, survival comes first always. You're talking about an animal with a stature of 5'9 and 300-400 (females weighing less and much shorter) pounds, going up against another male 10'0 1000+ with females roughly close to his height and weight for mating purposes. There is no winning that. The females would have been at least 8 ft tall and approximately 700 pounds. And this is just a guesstimation, nature sometimes males the females larger.

probably but just like chimpanzees if they were attacking they would of only of been able to kill the young and weakened save for maybe a gang jumping one to take a adult down. That DOES happen in real life and there is some documentation on it.

@@dqreps we only have few teeths pieces and the down-jaw. Still a bit of room for creativity and imagination . I personally love orangutangs from the ape family. Mostly because i am myself pretti big and enjoyed climbing trees in my childhood. So for me it is not the favourite ape the gigantopithecus, but still good to know we can potentially learn who those prehistoric great apes were ❤🎉😊

Gigantopithecus for sure!!! 10 ft vs. 6 ft? The odds aren’t in the gorillas favour. Unless we r able to determine what other animals giganto had to deal with back in SE Asia 9 million years ago, we’d have to assume they had to engage and defend in combat from other predators or rivals as well.

They were likely stronger or atleast extremely similar in strength as gorrila except they are bigger

I presume size also inflicts fear If I at like 5,10 160 pounds had to fight a 7ft 400 pound beast I'd probably be scared same for animals I assume big animals have intimidation or fear factors because of size

Im sure Gigantopithecus would weigh about a ton if it stood ten feet tall. This is where the Square-cube law comes in. Over about six foot tall in 2D, the volume goes up exponentially, therefore the weight does too.

Giganto would always warn of its presence by wood knocking. If intruders persisted it would have let loose with blood curdling howls that could be heard for 5 miles. If that didn’t work Giganto had a mighty arm and could hurl rocks and boulders at enemies. However most of the time Giganto used its cloaking abilities to avoid confrontation. Despite its size it was often invisible to opponents even if it was only inches away. The smell of Gigantopithecus was usually enough to deter any kind of attack.

Gorillas have some intelligence, but it’s usually not on display when they fight. That’s when the brute strength comes out and Giganto would rip them limb from limb in that department. Also, I’ve often wondered if maybe, since they were being outdone for resources by smaller primates, Giganto didn’t simply evolve to be smaller? Ie they evolved into modern day orangutans, chimps, or gorillas. If smaller primates were doing better and primate size varies within species, it stands to reason that the smaller Giganto’s would’ve fared better as well, giving them a better chance of passing on their genetic material, thus making the species smaller in the long run.

The Giganto was likely wiped out due to a majority of factors, probably losing to smaller primates needing less food or out competing them when it came to territory and having larger numbers. Archaic humans may have also had a hand in it's demise, but it's likely it was unable to sustain itself when climates changed for the worse. Giganto may have been a herbivore, as many teeth of the animal have been found to have primarily plant and fruit material, and hunting for plants during extreme weather conditions is not sustainable. Smaller Gigantos may have existed and done better, but to what degree they did better or if they were even small enough to make a significant difference is unknown. (Not an expert, just did some searching)

gorilla groups should include at least 4-5 adult silver backs. gorilla groups are way too small. For example, a chimpanzee group can consist of over 30-40 members and they actually wage wars on the gorillas, almost always with the Gorillas losing.

⁠@@lasthope3237 yeah, I’ve seen a video of chimps trolling gorillas. Gorillas can absolutely wreck chimps, but that’s only if they can catch the chimp. In a flat plain, I don’t think a chump is dumb enough to try messing with a gorilla. But a few chimps could probably take out a gorilla in a forest with luck if they can manage to avoid letting the gorilla touch them. Idk how they would manage without at least like 5 of them though since their only method of seriously injuring a gorilla is probably by sinking their teeth and claws inside of the neck or stomach

@@lasthope3237 not that much stronger. Chimps are still extremely strong. And there are different chimp breeds. Some chimps are almost same size as gorillas. Plus the added advantage of dexterity in their hands to actually will weapons. Gorillas are too dumb to use a club for example. They just throw them in the air when they fight. The chimp is more intelligent and can work as an actual military unit. Gorillas are peaceful. Chimps go hunting for monkeys lol they are ruthless. They cannibalise. I'm pretty sure they eat the gorillas. I seen one tribe passing around monkey legs like they were kfc drumsticks. Was shocking. They will even kill their own tribe. Some breeds are Psychotic. Gobe I think they are called. Super jacked ape, almost looks like a gorilla in mass.

It seems likely that the changing glabal temperature and the sheers amount of vegetation required would have made it difficult for gigantopithicus especially living as a group regarless of intelligence they would have needed to uproot almost all vegetation as they went.

great video as usual, I just think the gigantopithecus (who names these things, they couldn't have named it something simpler?) size advantage would have been too much to overcome, considering the gorilla is not a natural predator as say a tiger. This is assuming that the GP would be as strong pound for pound, if not then all bets are off.

Scientific names have to be Latin (either classical Latin or Greek), they seem complicated to us, but when you translate them, they are actually incredibly simple. Giganto = giant pithecus= ape. Giant ape. Rhino= nose ceros = horn. Nose horn. It just sounds fancy to us

No way would the gigantopithecus be stronger pound for pound than gorilla. Larger an animal is, weaker it tends to become pound for pound. However, the size difference is massive so the gorilla would be completely rag dolled about. Wouldn’t even be close. Be like a full grown man vs a very small child.

But isn’t there only teeth and 4 mandibles found if the gigantopithecus. We don’t actually know it was massive, it could of just had a large head and everyone is presuming.

@@RyanFozzyFoster Fair point Ryan but surely the Gigantopithecus couldn’t have had such a huge head comparable to the size of its body. Whatever the exact proportions, I think Gigantopethecus would have been quite a bit bigger than a gorilla.

It literally was a giant orang-utan lol it was also the yeti in Asia and sasquatch in USA. They could unearth trees and use them to cross rivers. This guy doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. The giant ape in the jungle book is a giganto. A giant orang-utan. Which is the closest ape species to human, the orang-utan. If Goliath was real, maybe humans and giants coexisted for a time, maybe some giganto did evolve into a human type of ape. We seem to have giant human fossils around earth that can't be explained.

If they was as big as gorillas, then they most likely didn’t swing through the canopy’s, the orangutan has long arms, to support their body weight while hanging, and swinging, they are way smaller then gorillas. No way a ape that size would be a swinging through the trees
