In the summer of 2013 Casey Gannon and Colin Arisman thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with cameras in hand. "Only The Essential" is the story of their 5 month, 2668 mile journey on foot from Mexico to Canada across the wilderness of California, Oregon, and Washington. Filmed entirely by hikers.

Stunningly done. I wanted to get just a preview before bed and I couldn't turn it off before thee end. Awesome shots and editing. The music was seamlessly scored along the way. Many wise words throughout as well. Nature is neat :)

Dude I’m hiking the PCT right now, entire pandemic I’ve been out here... I’m also 31. And for those who commented on hiking in 2021, I hope they can find a way with the PCTA not issuing any permits as of now for the 2021 season.

My family was poor, but we'd still go on vacations every year. A lot of our vacations involved hiking and going to museums since it was always free. We always enjoyed it and looking back, I'm grateful!

Just wanted to thank you for putting this film together. Takes a lot to make me tearful but watching you guys at the end brought a tear to my eye. I have a disability in my leg which means I would never be able to walk the PCT but I did grin when you went past Lake Tahoe as I swam that solo (all 21 miles) in 2018. Incredible scenery - well done indeed.

I've watched this documentary for years. In my 40's now and I have two young sons - 4.5 years and 5 months. Someday, I hope to live this dream. Despite the madness in this world, I hope to teach them the basics of life and share a wonderful memory on this trail to relive what I grew up with in Central Oregon. Much love and God Bless.

Thank you for all the times you paused, took out the camera and filmed. I know it is hard to hike a long way, worry about water and food and shelter and still find the drive to film something. The Daydreaming section is so beautifully done that it honestly makes my heart ache. Perfect music selection, the contrast of the weather in the footage, the passage selection for the narration...it’s all just so wonderful. That longing, nagging wanderlust just takes over as I watch it, every time. The thing I love the most about this is that what is conveyed to the viewer is strictly appreciation. Even the ugly moments that you know were difficult are portrayed in such a beautiful way, because you are aware that they were, and that the journey is a beautiful collection of discrete moments. I hope SO dearly that I am able to complete a thru-hike before my time on this Earth is through. Thank you for sharing this wonderful journey. It truly is incredible to watch.

I’ll be taking on the AT next year as well. I’ll be running it in an attempt to see how fast I can accomplish this amazing task. I’ve been training for almost a year straight and just visited Shenandoah this past weekend. Can’t wait!!

Recommend doing the PCT first. The AT is pretty difficult for most newbies. If you want to do a shakedown of your gear and your capabilities I would highly recommend the Tahoe Rim trail.

Hi Casey and Colin, i just wanted to say that watching your documentary inspired me to hike the trail this year (in 2016) as I'm writing this I am back home after completing about 1/3 of the trail. Watching this again has rekindled my fire of desire to complete a true thru hike, and hopefully will attempt and complete in 2017. I just wanted to say thank you so much for opening my eyes to the humbling beauty of of the wilderness, and also that anyone can do amazing things if they can put their mind to it.

I'm sat at home during the Covid 19 lockdown. This has film brought me to tears. Absolutely beautiful. I'm a mountain biker and a surfer. I have a great appreciation for nature and a growing longing to get out there on some great adventure. For now we having to stay at home but the mountains will still be there we are once again free. This video changed my idea on the trail I wished to do, in the past it was the Appelachian trail but coming back to this video constantly over the last 4-6 months I am ready to go and will be starting the trail with my best friend of all time next year in March, we will also be recording our journey along the way and I hope we can do our video as good as yours. I’ve watched quite a few documentaries on the Pacific Crest Trail trek and this one by far is my favorite. The narration at times moved me to tears with its beauty, especially when quoting the great Edward Abbey. My only complaint was the use of plastic bags when grocery shopping. When watching this video it's good to remember that it was filmed in a year with very little snow in the Sierras. This winter (2015 / 2016) the El Niño is active, and it's possible that many PCT hikers will end up scrambling for days through piles of deep snow in the Sierra in June and maybe even July.

I was born and raised in San Diego for 15 years and have always wondered the same thing. Why the hell do you want to spend your trip in nasty LA or some metro area? CA has SO much nature to offer and things to do that to me it seems like a waste of a really expensive trip.

Incredibly beautiful. So inspirational! Thank you so much for that. It became a big dream of mine to walk through the Pacific Crest Trail. I came to know PCT through the book "Wild", by Cheryl Strayed. And now, I watched this film... Absolutely wonderful and amazing. I'm a Brazilian girl, it will be more difficult for me, because I still don't speak English well to communicate fully, but I'm learning. And I'm going to start taking hikes to start preparing in some way.

Wonderful video, loved it. I start my PCT thru hike next year April 2017. I am ready, been training for 10 months. Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement to be brave and keep going.

This is the second time I've watched your film. The first time was this summer as i began my peakbagging journey. I don’t know how many people in the world are aware of that, walk through by only own foot makes us awaken up the pressure we originally had in long time ago. Going somewhere never known with only essentials, facing incredible scenery, we feel all of our life potentially are so happy. This is why I love hike and I really appreciate this movie reminded it!

I'm 58, fighting cancer and trying to make each day count.. I grew up backpacking in the Sierras, and what a great reminder of how beautiful that range is... moving to CO and Estes Park to enjoy the Rockies.. thanks for inspiring me to get outside... love it

Thanks for the reflections on my youth. In time these profound things you discovered about yourself will not have the sharpness and immediacy to them that they do now and your observations that so much is lost and the world is letting things of value slide by will become tempered and you will see that things must be lost for new things to happen. But these moment will remain with you for the rest of your life and help define who you are. Great job!

Thanks for sharing your journey. I never did the PCT, but often thought about it. Now I am too old with a hip replacement, a bad knee that has been scoped twice and needing a complete repair, and foot bunion complications. The old body just can't keep up with my young heart. Thanks again for letting me see and dream of what it might have been like..

Great photography! All of us must have at least one grand adventure in our lives. As a young man of 24 I walked most of the way across the U.S. during the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament in 1986. I remember the slow rhythm of the days walking across the great plains, sleeping in a tent every night in a mobile campsite with 450 other people who became friends. No matter the hardships I've experience in the 33 years since then I know I can face anything and the memory of those days helps anchor me again in the world, when you realize that living like our ancestors did at least for a few months will ground you in your human ness forever.

Respect!! One day you realize what you did.. when you know that the body no longer can do great things I hope you keep telling people that they can do it before it's too late! You only live once ! Great choice in live, therefore Respect !

Granny Gatewood through hiked the AT three times when she was in her 60's. She did it wearing Keds tennis shoes, with an old green wool army blanket as a sleeping bag, a plastic shower curtain for a tent, and a canvas sea bag carried on her shoulder for a ruck sack. You can do this.

There's a man that did the entire Triple Crown past the age of 70, and has walked many thousands of miles on top of that around the U.S. he has also Kayak'd the length of both the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. All after he had turned 70 years old. His name is Dave Roberts. Just saying.

I love this film, it shows the real joy and lifting of spirits to be had by simply taking part in an adventure like this. The joy in the faces of the people who you meet along the way, in your faces and in mine too watching it all. People who you know well and those who you meet only once in your lifetime will make an experience unique in a way that can never be planned or scripted. All you have to do to find and capture it all is to get up and to go and roll the dice to see how, where and how far they fall. Those memories will last forever. I have a little more faith in the human race after seeing and listening to this, thank-you for sharing with us.

This was beautifully done! I've never done anything even close in my life like the PCT or much else for that matter and have been thinking that this is something I've been needing in my life and more than ever now. This definitely pushed me over the edge of contemplating and I am going to plan on next spring to do it!

Same, I don't even remember how I ended up there (probably reddit heh), but I was reading about the PCT and triple crown of hiking on WIkipedia and it's sounds awesome! If I didn't have bills to pay I would totally take a leave of absence and spend the 5 to 6 months in nature.

Thank you for inviting us along with you! This was such an awesome documentary! At 66 I have section hiked the PCT on and off since 1971 so my goal is Thru Hiking it in the next few years.

I know the almost 40 minutes of the film won't do justice to how amazing your journey was. I'm from the Philippines and I am always on the watch of hiking documentaries. PCT is a dream. How I wish I could be able to witness all those things on the video with my eyes wide open standing on the PCT dirt. Ughhhhh. Thanks for this docu!
