What does life on the La Cloche Silhouette Trail look like from the perspective of 22 years of canoe trips in Killarney Provincial Park? Daryl Phillips and Scott Jordan made their first canoe trip into the La Cloche Mountains, over 22 years ago and are now planning to trade in their paddles for trekking poles. Wilderness Trails brings you along for the hike and shares with you the experience of hiking through the backcountry of Killarney Provincial Park.

Thank you for sharing this amazing trip with us. This looks like an absolutely beautiful adventure. So glad to see that you had great weather (albeit a little on the warm side!) for your trip. Killarney Provincial Park is well worth the time and energy spent to plan, experience and record such a breath taking beauty. Thanks again for sharing and I look forward to more of your adventures. Happy Trails!!

Did this trail alone at the end of October. Did not have to book camping sites by then. Didn't see anyone for 6 days straight. Took me 8 days to complete. The only true tips I can give is to be reasonably fit and to watch your footing on wet slabs, I slipped several times. I loved all the camp sites, so peaceful, so secluded. H47 at Heaven Lake in my opinion is the most beautiful. H48 was my favorite.

Daryl and Scott, I have to say, this is my favorite Silhouette trail KZfaq video. ( I have watched many ) Watching a hiking video, especially a hiking video of the Silhouette trail, is a lovely way for me to take a break, and dream and plan my next hike. So, after watching many videos, I just wanted you to know that this is my favorite. I appreciate your calm voice, the narration, your respect for this trail, the beautiful footage, and the wonderful music you have layered on the video. Thank you!

Thank you, Marlene. Like Daryl said, we loved this hike. It is difficult to believe that it is coming up on seven years ago. Many times since then I have let my mind return to this trip, and I have felt restored. All the best with your next hike.

This is great. I've added La Cloche Silhouette to my long term goals. Will hopefully spend 8-10 days on it in 2020. Thanks for the great video!

Really great video! Truly appreciate the time and effort you put into it. It’s one of the few that hit many of the campsites I did my first time in 2017. Kudos

I will be doing this trail next summer and will train hard for it. I can't wait!! I've been a bush crafter deep in remote areas for years but now I would like to take a step in a new direction and incorporate my skills to becoming an ultralight long distance hiker. Adventure is out there!! :D

This is such an amazing video. I watched it a couple of years ago, before hiking this trail, and just again today. The videography is incredible and I really enjoyed your narration as well. I have such great memories of the trail. It's surprising rugged and was more difficult than I expected, even though I hike a lot. Thanks.

Excellent film. LIke yourself, I've canoed much of Killarney over many trips and many years and I find myself planning the Silhouette this fall. As you understand, planning is the first part of every trip and can be just as fun and exciting as the doing part. Your video was so timely for my solo quest and I wanted to personally thank you for that. I've already heeded some of your advice....'Why would you rush hiking this trail?"...so already I've added an extra day to the plan. Thank you again and maybe we will share one another's wake one day during a paddle. --Ken

A wonderful and informative video. Have yet to make the transition from canoeist to full time hiker but now I am considering it. Out of interest, how much did your packs weight at the start?
@CedarhausFilms
@CedarhausFilms 6 жыл бұрын
We did not officially weigh our packs and could only guess they weighed about 35lbs. at the beginning of the trip. We are tackling the Coastal Trail In Lake Superior Provincial Park in a couple of days and will weigh our packs before we start. @cedarhausfilms

Wow, so glad I found this video. Kudos to you both for putting together such an awesome story of your adventure on the La Cloche. If I may ask, can you share what your backpack weight was at the start of your 10 day journey? I'm just at the beginning stages of planning for my solo hike hopefully in the fall of next year :) It looked quite hot when you traveled it and wondering if the "bug" season was upon you or not. Again, great job on the video and capturing the true beauty of our Canadian country!

We hiked the trail after bug season. The temperatures were hot, but the lakes were great for swimming. We did not officially weigh our packs and could only guess they weighed about 35lbs. at the beginning of the trip.

Great film but I do not understand why people insist on putting loud background music in wilderness or hiking videos instead of just listening to the music of nature

A loon seems to land on every lake there in the evenings, so that may work or mosquito/deer flies flying for discouragement, I agree with your comment though (even though the first time I took the trail, five days, the noise of children or car engines were greeted with recognition again)

@@CedarhausFilms YES! I will go again on September 21 and this may be the first time NOT to endure deer flies which buzz .... around ... you ... but ... never seem to land to kill them. (until you already were stung sometimes) Love the place. First time, grrr., I will use sticks for balance. Yes, my basketball team was called (20 years ago already) 'Over the Hill' (and served even then for amuse-meant) 🚶‍♂

Would you be willing to share the weight of your pack, as well as the exercises that helped you to strengthen your knees? I have done the trail 5 times. I usually take 8 days to hike the trail. My start out full pack with water and food is 48 pounds. I also have some knee issues, and am trying to strengthen them, so always love exercise tips!
@CedarhausFilms
@CedarhausFilms Жыл бұрын
We did not weigh our packs before this hike. Because we wanted to film as much of the trail and campsites as possible we did the hike in ten days, which meant a lot of weight added in food. The extra weight in camera gear was not enjoyable to carry either. I would guess we were both carrying around 45 lbs. each during our first day on the trail. Training for a hike like this I would advise to gradually add a backpack and some weight to get your knees strengthened and used to carrying all that extra weight. I also used a neoprene knee brace that gave extra support and brought along 'vitamin I' (ibuprofen) just incase.

Are reservations for the trail available online? Or by phone only? Great video!!

Paul Malcolm At the time we made our reservations, by phone was the only way. You will need to book early. I recommend that you phone at 7:00 am exactly five months in advance of your trip. Enjoy your hike on this amazing trail!

Did you need to buy a trail pass or something in advance? And did you have to book the camp sites?
@CedarhausFilms

You need to purchase a back country /interior permit and you need to reserve a specific back country hiking site for each specific night you are on the trail. Ontario Parks reservation line is 1-888-668-7275

I am reading Robertson Davies' The Manticore. I reread the whole Deptford Trilogy over the summer, finishing Fifth Business on a canoe trip in Killarney just prior to this hike and World of Wonders while I was in Algonquin. I love to read while I am camping. The only thing missing from this shot in the film is a wee taste of scotch - it didn't pass the weight test.

I believe 10 days on the trail should have felt painfully slow. I made it in 3 and I know people who did managed to squeeze the trip in 2 days by skipping the climb to Silver Peak.
