After I watched this channel today, I packed a camera and a 600mm lens and off we went ! When we got to the nearby beach, the tide was out and, at the water's edge, was a pretty target Kingfisher. Wanting to get closer, I tentatively started across the wet sand and, halfway to the water's margin, I sank deep down to the kneecaps . Stuck fast! I fired off a few shots before realising that I could not move! I lost balance and fell onto the mud - at 77 I'm not overly agile and somewhat front heavy; holding the R6/RF600 aloft (neither waterproof) I proceeded to have an angina attack; a nasty one! Somebody nearby called an ambulance whilst a couple of good Samaritans relieved me of the camera and eventually extricated me from the sucking mud. At this time my good lady decided to talk (?) to me about missed 'check up' appointments. By the time that the paramedics arrived, my chest, which is already packed with stents and various other hardware, had settled down. Covered from head to toe with wet mud I lay on a clean white sheet whilst they checked me over and declared that I might live another day! We are home now and 'She who must be obeyed' has found a brand new lecture series to deliver. Anyway - I got the shot I wanted!! Wildlife photography might be good for the soul but it gave my ticker a workout today.

Michael, so the moral of the story is do whatever it takes for the shot :-) In seriousness, what an ordeal, you sure did take it to another level to get the shots. Sorry to hear about that and it must have been tough on everyone involved. Great to hear it had a happy outcome and we are lucky to have the medical systems we do and live with such nice people. I would love to see the shot of the Kingfisher, feel free to email to duade.paton@gmail.com Cheers, Duade

Photography began as a way to get me up and moving. It started with going to certain locations and hanging out waiting for birds to come to me. Hard because standing for long periods of time was often difficult. Over the past year I have progressed to wandering around for miles looking for and finding birds to photograph. Wildlife photography has changed my life. you are right it is addictive, but a good kind of addiction because it improves health rather than being a detriment to your health.

Several things you've brought up: Bird/Wildlife Photography is hard. I need to keep reminding myself of this. It was especially the case early on. Over the last year or so I've noticed my skills have greatly increased and my photos have gotten much better, but still there are times when I can get discouraged. I have a special name for those field trips. I got it from the legendary blues guitarist and singer B.B. King. He said that sometimes in life you are "paying your dues". This means for me there are some field trips that really don't produce any special image or moment. The time spent is just "flat". But those times "pay my dues" to get me to that next field trip where wonderful things happen. It's all one. Our hobby teaches many moral and philosophical lessons.

People think I'm crazy trolling around in my boat or drifting down river just looking around taking photos. People have even made jokes about it, but it is more fun than fishing, I always come home with something and photos last forever. I feel a connection with the outdoors without causing any harm to the wildlife. I just enjoy hanging around the river and sharing my finds.

I'm not a dedicated wildlife photographer as such, I take landscapes, motor bikes, pretty much anything but, I completely understand where you are coming from, the connection to the solitude of being out in nature and opening your senses to receive what it is giving us is addictive, healing, soul repairing, all the things everyone has been saying here. Even as a kid I felt that connection, I was/are a horsey child and riding out on your own in the bush is the same kind of experience. We are the lucky ones.

I think you present one of the best photography channels on you tube, so calming, helpful and natural. I enjoy the peacefulness of being out and about and as you said your mind is in another place and its just a joy to watch mother nature and capture moments that open up in front of you. I cant believe the beautiful animals on your doorstep, stunning. Your pictures are natural and amazing, not photoshopped to death like some other photographers put up on you tube. I was always told photography is to 'freeze/capture a moment' and understand enhancing a photograph, I dont understand people who sit for hours on end editing a picture to be something that it never was, but thats just me. Well done, keep inspiring us

I have arrived here as a protester !! There is a plan to construct an new highway in Perth (Eastlink)which will clear more than 1000 hectares of remnant vegetation. The kind of connection that is irreplaceable... as a result I have developed a really strong desire to document what is here and what we will lose. After less than a year of walking through the bush I have become so aware of the birdlife here. I recognize their calls and I know where they roost and the passion for this hobby just continues to grow Completely agree with the comments around mental health. Loading my camera pack and putting my boots on lightens the soul.... thanks for the inspiration and education

My wife enjoys photography and I enjoy videography. We both enjoy birding. Another thing I like is gardening - and to be specific - gardening with wildlife in mind. This year I added four more trees to the yard to enhance bird habitat. They are a Gin Fizz, a Red Mulberry and two Dogwood species: Kousa and Red Osier. The best thing I enjoy about being in the outdoors is setting the weight of the world aside - the things we all get stressed over in day-to-day life. Yes, getting outdoors brings a peace from within. It is medicine to the mind and soul. Thanks for your video, Duade, as it too, is peaceful content to watch and enjoy when you're not outdoors.

I am so glad that I went from pro video, to recreational landscapes, and ultimately landed on hobbiest wildlife photography! I’m always excited about the next adventure, as well as the surprises of photographing something completely unexpected. Yesterday I went late afternoon to look for raptors, coyotes, pronghorns, and prairie dogs. I came home having captured a brawl between a black-billed magpie and an American kestrel (aka prairie hawk). It was spectacular, and unfolded all while I was sitting in the comfort of my car. I also see plenty of 70-80 year olds doing wildlife photography. Some roll up with walkers and a tripod, and others with canes. There is a certain camaraderie here between photogs at popular locations which I appreciate as well. Bonus…it’s a highly technical skill that requires a lot of patience and practice, but the rewards are immeasurable. With regard to social media, my most popular pic to date was taken with my cellphone! The average person doesn’t appreciate what went into taking some of the most incredible photos. I always suggest that people do photography for themselves first. Do what makes you happy, even if it’s with a cellphone.

Wildlife photography 📸 is like fishing 🎣 with a lens. To be able to take the time away from the stresses and strains of life is so important. Plus the randomness of nature and to witness a behaviour you'd entirely miss if you didn't take the time to observe it wonderful even if you miss it through the lens. But when you get home and scroll through your captures of the day, too get that shot is like finding a £10 in an old coat pocket. Shoot for yourself 1st always. If other people like what you do it's a nice brucey bonus. Wonderful video again. The simple things in life are usually the best things for the soul.

The algorithm must be on to me. I went out this morning to a local pond which is not too frequented by many. Lo and behold your video about the joys that bring us back time and time again came up. The place has a parking lot of sorts, not paved at all and it the gate opens rather late (8:00AM), I'm actually thinking of just hiking it up to it so I can be there before sunrise. Here is the jist of the story. I discovered this place about two yeas ago. Looks like I'm the only one taking photographs of birds there. Especially before sunset. I get a terrible hay fever reaction during the spring but it does not stop me from coming here. This morning a Sanderling landed just a few feet away from me. I had such an intimate moment or rather quite a long time as it went about its business, digging its long beak in the muddy and soft ground, eating to it's heart's content. Then the sneezing started, I tried to hold it but that scared it off. I was sweating from all the sneezing and decided to leave. It took three attempts to leave. As soon as I got ready to go, something started happening. There were Swallows, Canadian Geese, Sanderlings, one Killdeer, Night Herons, Egrets, Blue Herons, Mallard Ducks, Red Winged Black birds, just plain black birds and two other birds that I did not recognize. Oh, Cormorants and a black bird from the Navy or Air Force that flew by. I'm miserable with all the allergies symptoms as I write this, but I'm going again tomorrow morning to crawl around in the wet and muddy dirt. Feeling bad but the high I get is worth it.

Macro photography does it for me, like, seeing insects up close brings some humanity to them, like, you don't get to see spiders or ants or wasps etc from such a close up perspective in person otherwise, it's a completely different experience seeing their facial features close up through a viewfinder in person to googling a picture of a spider online or just looking at them normally without a camera

Wildlife photography is a great reason to wander, sometimes aimlessly, in places that wouldn't necessarily go without a camera. Imagine laying in the mud for hours on end not looking at or taking photo of birds! It brings nature into my home and pushes the unwanted stress of life out. How often in our life's do we truly give ourselves time to wander and enjoy the moment? It doesn't really matter about the photos, it is just nice listening to nature and being in it.

Likely why I prefer the "walk and shoot" over the staged situations. Walk and shoot is likely never going to net you a perfect shot but it's just so much more enjoyable just having a walk among nature to see what you can find and either photograph or just see. As for social media, we might all be shooting towards it but I've found my most liked shots are the failures or funnies, there's a whole subset of SM aimed at things that makes the viewer have a laugh! ;)

I concur with all your comments in this video. One to get my wife to watch so she understands.... I had a morning out bird hunting then plonked myself down to have a coffee and relax and was able to see this new video. Now I can relive the morning reviewing what I captured. It was slim pickens birds everywhere but nothing wanted to reveal itself. I was trying to find a male red backed fairy wren because I have seen one but never got a picture. I could particularly relate to the bit about being surrounded by birds. Often there just doesn't seem to be anything happening so I stop and sit quietly to do some breathing exercises and then all of a sudden I am surrounded with birds. Its so exciting. Often they are too close to photo but the feeling is amazing, but, like a religious experience, it is so hard to explain to someone else. I always wonder at the boots you use. In one video they looked so uncomfortable as you hunted birds in the hot summer sun. They seem good for squishing through mud chasing water birds. Good protection against snakes and three corner jacks? But still, they don't look comfortable for walking? Just wondering?

Thanks Kim, great to hear you are really enjoying your photography and yes that moment when birds come to you is amazing. The boots are the most comfortable gumboots I have worn, they are not really for hiking or long distances but I find them great for small walks through the bush. A bit hot in the middle of summer but great at other times. As you say I can walk in mud, shallow water, prickly grass etc and I don't have to worry. They are Muck Boots that I got from a local camping store. Cheers, Duade

So, I live in the US, during the start of Covid I didn't have much to do. I had always loved the outdoors and had an interest. I grew up in a rural area and had lost that interest as I got older living in a more urban setting. I started putting bird feeders out during Covid to see what birds I could attract. I had some pretty rare birds to my area show up, but only had a camera phone to take pictures with. In April of 2021 my cousin who shoots weddings let me borrow her Nikon D3400 and a 70mm-300mm Sigma lens. She showed me how to shoot in manual first so that I understood how each setting affected the other. About 3 months later I bought my first and still only camera which is a Nikon D7500. Then a few months later I got my Nikon 200mm-500mm lens which is still what I'm using today. For an amateur I've gotten some amazing photos. I'm self-taught on Lightroom and think that I do pretty well. For me getting into birding and photography had really helped me with my mental health. Just as Covid hit I started taking anxiety meds because it was getting hard for me to deal with the day-to-day panic attacks that started before everything went crazy. It was something that had been building for some time. It brought me back to feeling like a kid again, exploring and just getting back in touch with natural which we can all benefit from. I pay attention to the bird apps on my phone to let me know when certain birds will show up. I joined the local Audobon Society group which I loosely deal with because of my work schedule but do regularly post to on Facebook with pictures that I've taken. I want my end goal to be using my pictures for conservation efforts because so many people don't understand the importance of birds in our ecosystem as well as pollinators. I've just fallen in love with natural again and I want to share it with others.

I can certainly relate to the viewer who remarked that he did not know exactly why but wildlife photography made him happy. I could do this 7 days a week and never tire of it! Unfortunately, having a real job that takes up nearly 60 hours a week on a night shift severely limits the time I have for this insanely addictive hobby. Every moment I have in the field is therefore priceless. On a second note, I have learned more from watching your videos over the past few weeks than I had previously learned over the past ten years. I spent this past Sunday morning with three little red fox kits. It was only 25-30 minutes but for that time just watching them play I had no other thoughts, just enjoyed that moment because they don't come along enough. Sure I got some nice pictures but times I just watched them play.

Hello Duade, thanks for the shout out! Surprised the daylights out of me to hear my name bought up in one of your blogs. The setup you were using today was a perfect example of a starter kit. I would go further to say that with the improvement to point and shoot cameras have given them some very impressive abilities. Even if you use a cell phone camera, get outside and take a photo of something. I don't do social media to post my photos. When I was doing photography for hire I always had to think about what I photographed and how people would react to it. Now I do it for me and share my images with a very select group of people. I'd bet 99% of my photos never see the light of day but the ones that I keep tell a story every time I look at them. Again thank you for the shout out and have a great fall season there. Winter is still trying to hang on for a few more days here, but the nice weather will win out.

Great thoughts Guy! I'm running a photography club at work and encourage colleagues to share even their smartphone snaps! Last year I won a local competition with a sunset silhouette photo of a boat against a sunset. But also my best ever pictures of a kookaburra and emperor butterfly were taken with a mid-range smartphone. Of course I personally got the wildlife photography bug and developed all the symptoms that Duade mentioned, but basically stopped drinking the small amounts of alcohol I'd have previously, so it's probably levelling off with the gear 😀

Waxing philosophical about our hobby turned obsession turned passion is a good and healthy thing. Thanks for leading us to think along these lines, Duade. For me it's a transcendent experience--I'm in the presence of life, and I know I had nothing to do with it being here. This humbles me, and puts me in my proper place. Our world reflects the presence of a Master Designer, to my way of thinking. To see the glory of our Creator in all His creation--well, Jesus himself said "Consider the birds . . . " and used them on more than one occasion to teach life lessons. Bottom line--when I'm out in creation--with or without my camera, I feel closer to God.

I do have GAS but for me it is Guitar Acquisition Syndrome so I don't really have any money left over for camera gear! 😆 I got into photography by getting some camera gear when I ran a folk club. I tried to take my music photography to the next level by trying some landscape stuff and I quickly learned that I missed all the hiking and camping I did in my youth and I also learned I knew very little about photography. 😃 I studied art in college but a camera for me was always a tool for reference photos not for an end result. I've enjoyed learning to use my camera and the more I've traveled the more I've enjoyed taking wildlife shots as well as landscapes. My wife is from Scotland so when we go home for a visit it is always enjoyable to get out and get some shots. Even if it is just a red squirrel or a Heilan coo, and lots of 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑! I drive my wife crazy though because for me the act of being out in nature with or without my camera is the ultimate goal and more times than not I forget to process my photos and she is always bugging me to get my pictures on Facebook or Instagram!

Hi Duade. Thanks for another lovely video - it is wonderful to enjoy a video without being tempted by gear envy! My husband (Johan) and I enjoy nature photography together more and more now that he has retired - it really is a balm for the soul. I have loved the inclusion of different aspects of nature in this video - the wattle, the antechinus (that would have been my absolute highlight - they are my favourite small critter!!!) Creating photos with these aspects can make beautiful sets of photographs that compliment the bird photos and provide insight into the habitats they call home. Thanks again!

Over the years I tried various genres of photography, and I still enjoy doing some when I can. Since covid I have taken up wildlife and bird photography which because it gets you outside thers the bonus of being with nature, and it doesn't always matter if I get a shot let alone a good one. Today we went out to our antiques shop (we rent a space at a centre) and whilst there there's a large garden wooded area, I wandered around and I could hear them but couldn't get close enough. I didn't get a shot but being there was reward enough. Your right wildlife photography is addictive and I love it.

With covid in the UK, back garden photography became a big thing and it's fun I could sit in my office (the conservatory) and shoot out of the window with coffee and bacon rolls laid on, but all good things come to an end and I'm out and about again enjoying the fresh air.

Hi Duade, thanks for another wonderful video. I' ve been doing wildlife photography as a hobby since 2006, when I bought my first camera (a little Kodak easyshare C series). There, I learned about the pacience and perseverance to take a good photo. But that's not the most important to me now, I think that is really important to know the place where you live, fauna and flora in general, and the photography is an important tool to show others about it, and encourage them to learn about our local nature. Everytime I go out, I come back with something new and that's what makes me happy (even if I can't take a picture of that). And as you said, the moments with your friends taking pictures and the coffee, beer or the beverage of choice after that are valuable too. Thanks again for the video, and the "gear aqcusition syndrome" is real haha. Cheers!

It all started as travel photography, and soon evolved to more specialized - macro and I started to get above rubbish :D from the beginning i knew portraits or weddings are not an interest of mine, even when people suggested that i should do that, because it pays money - not for me, I better be poor but enjoy it. One day, I was focusing on bees looked up and saw never seen bird - European pied flycatcher, and I was astonished that I never seen it before when it is somewhat common where I live, and was even able to capture a decent shot with my trusty 70-200,. I saw another world with macro and that this is also what happened when I bought my first telezoom lens, whole new dimension opened up - now I spot not only spores, birds themselves but also sounds - it is truly immersive experience that you are glad you are part of it and able to enjoy. Instagram trap is so on point, it did not take long before I felt to that - and still do and have to actively remind myself that this is not the point once I feel disappointing for eg that my camera cant capture decent stuff in low light. It is indeed a bit daunting how to progress, and there was no community and only hard core ornithologists were taking pictures and they were not to keen to share, thank god for youtube and people like you that are open and I can relate to! only in recent years I start to see community forming and I had my first bird watching tour the other week, which was such a great experience to listen to Eurasian eagle-owl in the distance and share it with like minded people. As you said, once you are out there experiencing being present and alive, why would you want to be anywhere/do anything else? I feel sorry for people who are missing out as there is profoundness to it you cant explain.

Hey Duade, great video! It really resonated with me. It is so important to just enjoy nature and not to be in nature to just shoot the next likes. In the past I saw a video about a large collection of negatives that was found from a completely unknown New York photographer. It was a tressure trophe of photo's. The amazing thing is, those photographs where at most only seen by a handfull of people. It really showed that the photographer just made photographs for himself. I think that nature photography, beeing it birds, flowers, insects, etc. really allows you to be aware of your surroundings and loving every detail of it. The one thing I really enjoyed in this regard is creating a few photo books. I regularly pick them up to look at the pictures and rejoy the moments.

Great video! i just started out. Had photography as a passion for a long time but never had any reason to pursue it further. Lately I felt really depressed and stressed out and eventhough it might seem counter-intuitive, getting up at 5am and cycling to a local creek in order to wait motionless for 3h to get some birds to come closer, I actually love it. I already started feeling envious on the gear and support other people even younger people than me receive, but I got to land some nice shots with my a6000 on a 315mm equivalent. And your words really helped me getting over this kind of pressure I felt for having to deliver some images (even though I only ever posted one up until now). Thanks for your videos! I love photography period but there's something so special about being on the land and in the bush, or near a river, or on the side of a mountain.... well you get the idea. But for me as a person of Aboriginal ancestry it's also about making a connection with our collective past and about being out with the spirits of the land. Taking a photograph of a bird or animal or plant is a connection back to our way of life and a connection with our ancestors. I'm not sure if you'll understand this, but it's something to think about. Thank you for your wonderful videos - this one was very philosophical and I totally enjoyed it. Take care and be safe out there....

Frederick, I can totally relate to what you are saying. I had a very emotional connection to Tiritiri Matangi Island in NZ which is a bird sanctuary free of pests and predators. When you go into the forest it is like going back in time before Europeans arrived and you get a sense of what it must have been like with all of the birds and wildlife going about their business. I can only imagine what your ancestors must have seen when traveling this incredible country. The birds and wildlife must have been awe inspiring and no doubt the source of many stories, art and culture. Take care, Duade

I found a thread on a photography forum once where the question 'what setup are you using for shootings ducks in flight?' got a few answers like 'double barrelled shotgun' 😀 but all your thoughts are so true! I started my wildlife photography underwater which has its own struggles! It is such a rush to get any shot of a new species, whether it is a tiny tropical way out of it's natural habitat (in Sydney), a wild koala on a treetop on Magnetic Island or a beautiful olive-backed Sunbird, feeding on a golden shrimp plant in a botanic garden. In some sense moments like this give you the meaning of life!!

This video was just as therapeutic as going out with the camera :) I'll give my opinion with the thrill of the chase section, my opinion is the physiology of humans not having claws, sharp teeth, or a short digestion system like a carnivore, we don't naturally feel like hunting, I feel like the chase comes the concept of an Easter egg hunt e.g., finding different species is like finding the easter egg, maybe its our instincts when it comes to the gathering, looking for different food sources like fruit or nuts or witchetty grubs. But the whole concept of the camera is for sure like the comment, its the same satisfaction as shooting a gun. Every time I get a photo I say I 'shot this species'. Thats why I love the feedback of a mechanical shutter and its a nice feeling to capture moment with an animal forever instead of ending that moment with a gun.

Thanks Kurtis, great insight and yes, we have reward pathways in our brains that make us feel good when we find food sources etc. Perhaps when we find new birds it triggers the same response. Cheers, Duade

My friend and l travel frequently to various wetlands and forests in NE Victoria. It's quite enjoyable just to sit and watch, or get down and dirty on the ground taking pics. I get quite excited when l get home to process them and find a couple of keepers.

Duade, I have thought about this question of what it is about getting into wild photography. Since watching this video, I actually think about fishing. Kind of funny. As a child in Alaska it was a big part of my life to catch a trout or salmon. The unknown and then the fantastic excitement of it as I caught one and the reeling it in. Also ocean fishing,. You never know what you got. It is that way when adventuring into the woods or desert with a big lens now for me. I was never a hunter. I moved to Arizona some time ago (I like extremes) and there is fishing, but I live in the desert and in a big city and basically lost touch with Nature it seemed . But I rediscovered it after losing my wife. I had to get out, and at some point I took my camera that I had bought at Costco and started taking bird pictures. Nature heals, that is the truth. Taking a walk, looking for birds, I feel calmer, I appreciate life more, all life. Sunrises, Sunsets, Birds, animals, you need to stop and breath. To see a bird is like that nibble of a fish to me now. To take the photo is great and like reeling it in - in some wierd way. Once I upload it and say this one is good, it is like maybe cooking it for dinner. I am actually moving next week to New Mexico. Less city and more nature. I must talk about bird photography a lot. As a going away present my real estate agent, actually gave me some New Mexico Bird books :) - it is addictive. Thanks again for another great video. Busy moving has put a damper in getting out, but next week a needed mini vacation - it is me, my camera, and nature.

Bruce, thanks for sharing your story and sorry for your loss, that must be tough. Great to hear that nature and photography is an outlet for you and that it brings you a sense of joy. I totally relate having grown up in NZ we did plenty of fishing. Good luck with the move and happy birding in New Mexico, Cheers, Duade

Thanks Duade. I am looking forward to finding new birding areas in New Mexico and I have a good friend who is into nature photography, so I will get out and explore with a “mate” as you Aussies say. I will be sneaking back into Arizona at times. Too many good birding areas I have not seen yet. :) Love all the great content you produce. Thank You.

I love hiking for the same reason - just getting out in nature and shutting my brain off. I find I get almost mission-driven, though - gotta hike 12 miles! Gotta make it to this particular spot! Now that I have a decent lens for wildlife photography, I think I'll be taking more time and taking in more of my surroundings.

What a nice video! I started wildlife photography late 2020 as a way to get out of the house while minimizing the risks of getting Covid. I fell in love with it, it's just so peaceful to be there surrounded by nature.

Hello from England Duade, great video and nice that you are pointing out the same trials and tribulations that beset us all, I take my camera with me when taking our dogs for a walk in our local park, and sometimes think that there is nothing worth photographing, then a bird, squirrel or even a tree perks my interest, yes sometimes I come away without anything I like but more often than not will find a subject towards the end of my walk and think, Yes, got it. Also love that you show that you don't need the latest and best equipment, I recently purchased the Canon 400 F5.6 second-hand I might add, great to see you taking photos with the kind of equipment we can afford. Well done and please keep making videos. Love that you put the settings on the photos you show. Thank you.

Whilst I've loved travel photography during the lockdowns that was curtailed. Luckily I live on a few acres here in Australia with some bushland around and found an abundance of feather wildlife (and a deer) to photography with an especially photogenic family of kookaburras. The whole looking at photos and then researching what bird I have snapped has become quite an interest.

Love that you smiled so much through this video. Love a good wander and amble through the bush and just see what there is. It is about the process and being present in the bush. It talks to us in those moments. I think I can only resonate with others about why we head out. . . . It is about that connection to something greater than me, nature just does something for our souls and health. I always feel better after I’ve been bush. It has literally saved my life and been a big part of my own mental health journey. And if I see something I haven’t seen before, I am absolutely elated. Or even if I just see something creature wise, I stop and enjoy. I only ever get blurred butts though! Hahahahaha.

Great video, very enjoyable and absorbing, and echoing my own sentiments about being out in nature with the camera. I forget all my worries when I am out there, and the thrill of the 'chase' and the 'capture' causes such a rush of adrenalin that all pain from my various health conditions abates for the moment. Cathartic and therapeutic! Plus, the exercise is good for me, even though it hurts! Haha! Love your enthusiasm and style of presentation in this one.
