Wildlife Photography Vlogs - Being Creative at Ndumo game reserve
I'm on safari at Ndumo Game Reserve looking for a hero shot of Fever Trees overhanging the dark, crocodile-infested waters of Nyamithi Pan. It's dangerous to get too close to the water's edge and I have to photograph from a distance and with an armed escort. But that is wildlife photography in africa...things never go to plan. and sometimes we have to be creative!

Thanks Giles, I really appreciate the encouragement you give me :) I suppose I'm a little frustrated because I also blew a lot of chances (that I didn't show you - maybe I should) and know that I could have got more. There's no substitute for time spent on location learning it. I spent a whole day trying slow shutter high contrast panning shots in sensational light and most didn't work. Feel I should have done better with the opportunity!

I love them, really iconic trees. There is a wonderful forest of them in the Pafuri private concession in Kruger that I am desperate to photograph - but can't get in. You have some amazing shots Ray, really interesting from my perspective because I have spent next to no time in the Waterberg or up in Mapungubwe yet. I really like the look of the landscapes there. I just wish I could walk around freely to photograph them. As usual, everyone is intent on populating every spare inch with lions!!

Well Will they all turned out to me ... excellent images .. loved the contrast of the dark background with the white birds .. the crocodile works well too . So the wildlife images for me work well with a different look which is unusual and pleasing to the eye . The landscape images work well with the composition you chose. If may say this .. add a little more mid tones and contrast into them giving them a deeper mood . But as long as you are satisfied then that’s all that matters . Just my two cents worth . Excellent outcome from seemed like a long trip for no much . 👍👏👏

@@WillGoodlet Greetings Will 👋🏼 . Do you print much of your own work ? Yes those trees are very photogenic indeed. In the right conditions one could obtain some really wonderful compositions there .. add a bit of mist to the background and you would have something really special to work with. @@WillGoodlet Hi Will They are fantastic images so be proud of them as you made good use of what was available at the time . I have learned over the years now .. when I feel lazy I never edit .. Lol 😂 .. I have to be in the mood to edit or I get lazy there too . And generally make a meal of it ending up having to refit them which is ok as it’s all a learning process . The one beautiful thing taking images in Raw is you always have the ability to start all over again with basically a negative file as you would with a film camera . It’s great fun and extremely addictive and satisfying mostly. I enjoy your style of photography . Keep shooting Will . Cheers

Those shots in the trees are stunning! I camped there years ago and was woken one night by 3 rhino around my tent. I quietly climbed onto the roofrack of my landrover and watched them grazing n the moonlight. There are three parks in that area I really like: Ndumo, Mkuze and Ithala. Mkuze has similarities to Ndomo with fever trees and lakes, wheras Ithala is very steep and has magnificent cliffs and deep valleys. I think the same river might flow through Ithala, but the mountain version. BTW is the best toilet in Africa still there? The one at the picnic spot without a door and views across the river?

Duncan, sadly I did not have the privilege of sitting on that seat. I never saw it!! My best spot so far has been high up on the 'mother' in the Tsodilo hills - have you been there? I really want to get down into the KZN parks - I haven't explored them much at all. I think there's a lot to see. Thanks for watching and, please, let me know of any good spots that could suit a video!

@@WillGoodlet Not I've not been there. I was planning a trip to Africa this year but alas! I've not been to Botswana for a while now, but once things open up I might need to get my wildlife photography fix! Last time I was in Ithala you could still get out of your car, so it might be nice for video. Pretty sure sure there would be some good birding as well as its quite dense bush in the valleys. There's even a few 4x4 tracks, one of which goes quite a long way down the valley and beyond the camping area.

Nice to see how you made the 'best' out of a 'bad' situation; as Americans say: 'if life throws lemons, then make a lemonade'. I didn't know from watching you channel so far that you were doing landscapes (devoid of animal life :-) so it is nice that you share with us that aspect of your art/creativity too. The contrasty scenes with the birds and the croc were some of my more favourite ones. For people looking for Nyamiti on google maps it appears like that; i.e. without the 'h'. I too have often travelled very far to photograph something only to be beset by repairs, wildfires, heavy rain, heatwave...or whatever. Thus, a few words of wisdom concerning plans: 'a plan is not a description of the future' and 'no plan survives contact with reality'. We should keep these in mind cause we often forget. On a minor point the video IQ didn't appear of your usual quality maybe some different equipment were used or utube is playing up. Take care.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dimitris thanks for watching :) Yes I love landscape photography and also dabble in film photography. It's actually awkward to do landscapes in SA because we have no way to get onto farmland (not like the UK for example where there are ancient and legal rights of way across the country and common land). Here, given the farm murders, we are likely to be accosted if not assaulted for trespass. Then in the national parks, they have been re-introducing lions (even in the Karoo) so you cannot get out the vehicle for foregrounds. It's very frustrating! I haven't really been on any landscape trips while I've been active on YT but everyone also says to keep the channel on topic, so I guess this channel is mainly wildlife for the moment - at least until I get out to some landscapes - I hope to visit Lesotho, the Drakensberg and Namaqualand this year if I can swing it. I have seen Nyamithi / Nyamiti also spelled Biyamithi - I guess it's phonetics as it must be a Zulu or Tsonga word. Thanks for pointing it out. Thanks also for the heads-up on the IQ. I'm not sure what it was, as for the most part it looks ok to me. I am aware that for the shots off the long pole/jib shots the quality won't be as good as that is a tiny little camera that I am still learning. I had to think long about the value of a gimbal and the fact that I just can't carry all that stuff when on foot :) Keep well!!

@@WillGoodlet Tnx for your reply; maybe an idea is to try sea- rather than land-scapes :-)) Some pretty impressive coast-line in SA. I appreciate the difficulties of private land and unable to get out of the vehicle in national parks for foreground interest. Perhaps the areas around the: Blide River Canyon; e.g. God's window, Wonder view, Bourke's Luck Potholes, Lowveld View, Three Rondavel could offer some landscape opportunities. What I can suggest about the National Reserves are the 'hides', picnic area, and viewing points. And perhaps entertain the idea that foreground interest is overrated anyway ;-)) I'm sure we'll enjoy whatever you do; it is always of such high quality. Please carry on.

Hi Kenneth, thanks for taking a look and for leaving a comment! Yes, everything is in good nick. They have spent some money adding bathrooms / showers to the chalets. They have built some bigger and newer chalets (which make the feel slightly less intimate unfortunately). Bongani is well and it's so interesting to watch him work with birds. He comes alive - he doesn't care much for photography though - not nearly as exciting :)

Hi Will, I only recently found your channel and I’m really enjoying your content. I love your high contrast images and indeed they have made a great theme. I have recently got back from my first safari in Tanzania and really struggled to get creative shots, I wished I had seen this video before I went, it’s a great lesson in how you have to adapt to the situation that confronts you. When you say you are using -3 stop exposure compensation and that exposes the white bird correctly, how are you metering that? Spot metering off the bird or evaluative (or matrix for us Nikon users)? I would have thought such under exposure would turn the bird grey?
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter, thanks for leaving this comment and for watching my stuff - really appreciate it! Sorry to hear you struggled with some shots in Tanzania. I know what it's like - you have this big event and it can be really hard out on the trip. I've struggled often and find that where possible, reviewing the images each night can help a lot to inform the next day's photography or give you ideas. It is really hard when you go to an unfamiliar location - you just don't know what to expect and you have a time limit! With regard to exposure, I was using evaluative (metering over the whole frame = matrix in Nikon?) in aperture priority mode (I did also try manual but the water brightness was also changing). By compensating -3 stops the water went pretty much black which I didn't mind. The dynamic range in this instance was huge as the sun as quite high. Metering the scene without compensation left the birds badly blown out. So I just dropped the exposure until I was no longer blowing the birds. Even then the dynamic range over the individual birds often ruined the shot with one side in sunlight and the other in deep shadow. A lot depended on the orientation of the bird to the sun. Cheers! Will.
